Rua’s last win in the Octagon came more than a year ago when he stopped Vera with strikes in front of an immense audience thanks to the fight’s status as a FOX headliner. In the bout, Vera showed some excellent toughness but had no real response for Rua’s onslaught. Though it took Rua nearly four full rounds to achieve the stoppage, he eventually did enough damage to Vera to score the TKO victory (his eighteenth in 21 total wins).
UFC light heavyweight Mauricio Rua (21-8) has been amongst the top 205ers in MMA for nearly a decade based on his remarkable run in PRIDE as well as success in the Octagon. However, “Shogun” is at a crossroads after having lost back-to-back bouts for the first time in his career. The beloved Brazilian will have a chance to get back on track this weekend when he faces James Te Huna at UFC Fight Night 33. And, looking over his Top 10 instances of success in the ring, there’s no reason to think he won’t do just that and take Te Huna out in spectacular fashion. (Photos by USA Today Sports Images)
