Junior dos Santos may have been decisively beaten by UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez in their last two meetings, but at the end of the day, “Cigano” remains the promotion’s #1 contender and one of its biggest stars. So in other words, there’s little doubt that the former champ is going to face a top tier heavyweight when he returns to action. The question is, however, who will it be?
Well, recently JDS spoke to MMA Fighting.com about that very subject, and here is some of what the 29 year-old had to say about his next bout.
“I don’t know what’s next for me, and I don’t choose opponents,” dos Santos said. “I’ll be ready for anyone, but I believe my next opponent can be either Josh Barnett or Travis Browne.”
Barnett and Browne are set to fight on December 28th at UFC 168, and the winner will certainly be within reach of a title shot. The question is, however, would the UFC tap the victor to fight dos Santos? And then run the risk of eliminating another contender from a title fight with Velasquez? If he gets by Fabricio Werdum next? Guess we’ll see.
Of course, the UFC could also tap the loser to fight dos Santos, but that will likely depend on how Barnett-Browne plays out. Regardless of who is next, it will be interesting to see JDS back in the cage, and whether he can make another title run.
