While more than a few fighters have had amazing 2013 campaigns, one of the leaders in this respect has been Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. After all, as the year winds down, Souza sits at #3 in the UFC’s middleweight division thanks to impressive wins over Chris Camozzi and Yushin Okami.
As a result of the year Souza has had, the veteran could be knocking on the title shot door next February, provided he gets by Francis Carmont at UFC Fight Night 36. Many pundits and fans believed “Jacare” would be a serious contender for the UFC title, and the 34 year-old certainly appears to be headed that way.
So what does Souza think of his title shot chances? While speaking to MMA Fighting.com recently about that subject, here is some of what the Brazilian had to say:
“I have the perfect style to beat anyone, including Chris Weidman,” Souza said. “Many people don’t believe in my potential yet, but that’s how I like it. I still have much to prove, I’ve fought only twice in the UFC, but I can guarantee you that I’m ready for any challenge to prove I have what it takes to get the title.”
By “style”, one would assume that Souza is referring to the fact that not only is he a superstar on the mat, but he has solid wrestling skills and considerable stopping power in his hands.
It will be interesting to see how Souza’s style matches up against Carmont, who despite the fact he hasn’t recorded any highlight reel wins recently, has certainly been shutting down the opposition.
