It’s been almost a month now since Georges St. Pierre defeated Johny Hendricks, and announced he’s been dealing with personal issues, and it appears as though we’ll learn what’s next for him today.
Last night, the Ultimate Fighting Championship announced that Dana White and St. Pierre are holding a “special” media call today beginning at 2:20 PM / ET. 11:20 AM / PT. The press release did not offer any hints as to what might be revealed.
It should be noted, however, that the call was announced not long after White spoke with GSP over the phone. Then the UFC boss man relayed to MMA Fighting.com that St. Pierre would be discussing “stuff that people want to hear.”
Following St. Pierre’s win over Hendricks at UFC 167, the Tristar fighter said he needs to take a break from fighting due to undisclosed issues.
After the call, at 2:50 ET / 11:50 PT, St. Pierre will speak with media at an event in Quebec City. Unless you’ve been taking a break from the world, then you know that this is the event that prompted so much buzz when it was announced earlier in the week.
Initially, it was reported that St. Pierre had called a press conference, but follow up comments from White and GSP’s manager relayed that the champ was already scheduled to appear at the event. So, it became unclear as to whether the 32 year-old was planning to make an announcement or not.
Of course, now that a conference call is scheduled and considering what White said, it certainly looks as though St. Pierre intends to discuss his future. And as far as the fighter’s renowned coach, Firas Zahabi? He told MMA Fighting that not even he knows what GSP has to say.
“I honestly haven’t asked him and told him I’ll wait like everyone else,” he said. “Georges needs space and time for himself.”
It looks like it could be an interesting day.
