Machida Believes Belfort “Contradicts Himself a Lot”

Lyoto Machida

Although Lyoto Machida is set to fight Gegard Mousasi at UFC Fight Night 36 in February, that doesn’t mean the decorated fighter isn’t still hoping to throw down with Vitor Belfort at some point.

Following Machida’s memorable KO win over Mark Munoz in October, Dana White relayed he’d like to see “The Dragon” fight Belfort, and the former light-heavyweight champ was clearly on board. Apparently, Belfort doesn’t like to see Brazilians calling out their fellow countrymen, however, which prompted Machida to say the following at a recent media event (comments via MMA Fighting.com):

“He contradicts himself a lot,” Machida said. “He says everyone should fight each other because it’s professional, but then he says we shouldn’t fight each other.”

“It’s hard to understand. What does he mean? Why is he contradicting himself? I have nothing against him, we’re good, but we’re professionals.”

“If you want to get to the top, you can’t say you won’t fight this one or that one,” he said. “You have to be open to fight the best.”

One could also see this as further evidence that Machida is willing to fight long time friend Anderson Silva if the need arises. Machida also credited Belfort for his recent wins and added “The Phenom” deserves the title shot he’s set to receive.

UFN 36 will go down in Jaragua do Sul, Brazil, and will also feature “Jacare” Souza taking on Francis Carmont.

Belfort does contradict himself a lot – often between one tweet and the next.

His middle name in Portugese translates to “yes I didn’t”

I think Machida would be all for fighting Silva, I don’t think it’ll matter though. I’ve said it before and I’ll go on record and say it again, I think Silva is just holding out to win the belt, get the Roy Jones Jr fight, then retire. If he doesn’t beat Weidman again, I think he retires anyways since Dana said the only way a superfight will happen is if the title is on the table.

I like that Machida is seeming to be more aggressive now at MW, not just in the Munoz fight, but how he’s presenting himself too. Always been a fan though
