Poirier Says Brandao is “Dangerous”, But Plans on “Outclassing” TUF Winner

With all the hype regarding Chris Weidman-Anderson Silva II, and of course Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate’s rematch, the rest of the UFC 168 card is getting lost in the shuffle a little bit. It’s kind of understandable, of course, considering the back story that’s tied to both of these championship fights.

Another of the December 28th card bouts that has a ton of potential, however, is the featherweight scrap between Dustin Poirier and Diego Brandao. After all, it will feature the well rounded and #6th ranked Poirier taking on an aggressive, former TUF winner.

Poirier, who is coming off an impressive UD win over Erik Koch, recently spoke to MMA Junkie.com about Brandao and the fight. Here is some of what the 24 year-old “Diamond” had to say:

“I feel like I’m better than [Brandao],” “Poirier said. “I’m a better kickboxer, a better boxer. My wrestling is better, and I feel like my jiu-jitsu for fighting is better than his. If we were in a jiu-jitsu competition and we both had a gi on, maybe his jiu-jitsu is better there. “He’s a [bantamweight] veteran, so he’s dangerous. He knows what’s going on. I plan on outclassing him.”

It’s a huge opportunity for Brandao, as since he was decisioned by Darren Elkins last May, the Jackson’s MMA fighter has won three in a row. Defeating a top ten ranked fighter would position “DB” within striking range of that coveted list himself.

So far, it looks like several of the betting lines have Poirier as the favourite in the -200 to -210 range though. If Poirier wants to crack the top five in 2014, then chances are he’ll need a win on the 28th.

UFC 168 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
