UFC Fight Night 36: Up Close with Gegard Mousasi

It’s got to be tough going to Brazil to fight a Brazilian in a UFC event geared toward the Brazilian masses who will fill the arena chanting for your death. But former Strikeforce champ Gegard Mousasi cares not for such things, and at UFC Fight Night 36 on Saturday night, he’s going to step into the cage and do his job – which is to utilize his ace striking skills to solve the Lyoto Machida riddle, and make the partisan Brazilian crowd choke on their Acai berries.

The things going in Mousasi’s favor include his confidence, his experience, and the fact that he’s no stranger to wrecking Brazilians (see: Mousasi vs. Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza or Mousasi vs. Renato “Babalu” Sobral); the things going against him on Saturday night include the possibility that someone in the crowd will shoot him regardless of whether he wins or loses.

Anyway, enjoy this video interview of him.

I cannot even tell who wrot these articles anymore as there is the Facebook, Twitter and Google plus share buttons over every name up top, and lately I go straight to comments because it seems better. Dont know about you guys but I am rooting hard for Gegard this weekend. I really think if it stays standing he has a great shot at a win.

I feel like you guys are being a bit hard on ol’ Jimbo here. Sure, he’s no Brendhan, and his hate-fucking of Vitor is a bit rough, but this was kinda funny, and clearly a bit tongue in cheek (specially if you’ve spent any time in Brazil).

Mousasi’s got this one. Machida’s too complacent, and my Armenian boy has something to prove.

Also, WTF? 5 oz hasn’t even mentioned that Gil Melendez has a deal on the cards with Bellator? Slipping. Slipping.

  • AlphaOmega says:

Lets talk about it here then, Gil signed a deal with Bellator because after going 1-1 in the UFC him and his mngment decided that he needed a big pay raise for some reason, the UFC has the ability to match the Bellator offer still. So it makes you wonder if Dana will pull some stunts just to piss off bjorn like bjorn did with alvarez

Bellator is obviously the minor leagues compared to the UFC and yet they offer similar compensation to fighters.

    Oh, right, back room bonuses.

Gil was paid well in his first UFC fight… because it was carryover from his WEC deal. He took the UFC champ to a virtual draw. For his next fight, his pay dropped down UFC standards and he beat Diego in a fight that Dana gushed about. And since then he’s apparently been looking for a raise. Dana’s response concluded with: “He better look elsewhere.”

I wonder how Dana’s shoe tastes.

  • Richard Stabone says:

^ Correcting myself, Gil made $175K for each of his first two UFC fights thanks to his WEC contract. With two exciting fights under his belt, he & his management team weren’t excited about the prospect of a pay cut… thus the stalled contract talks.

Dana did what Dana does, stuck his foot in his mouth, and it helped open the door for Bjorn to jump in the mix and once again make life difficult for the UFC. Gil is clearly using Bellator for leverage, and probably nothing more, but it’s hilarious nonetheless.

  • AlphaOmega says:

Dana has seemed to sour on the whole Caesar (or is it Ceasar?) Gracie crew, which sucks since they hold my second favorite fighter (the one most people least like), so I don’t think Dana will really care to much if Gil goes elsewhere.

  • hindsightufuk says:

the way i feel about the Ceasar Gracie boys, and i love, Nick, Nate & Gil, but they’re never gonna be UFC champions, and i honestly feel a smaller company like Bellator would suite them down to the ground. Nick and Nate would be 2 of the first names i mention with regards to still active fighters that i will always watch and support, and i want to see them win every single time. if that means dropping to a Bellator and fighting the Ben Saunders, Lima’s, Chandlers, Alvarez’s, Pitbulls, maybe even Nick vs Schlemenko and so on and so on, then fuck i am all for it.

as for tonight, i’ll be screaming for Gegard to win this one

Wheres the prelims? Where can I watch the prelims.

    Apparently on Fight Pass

So we have to pay monthly to watch prelims that are free? Thats weak.

  • darth_irritable says:

Gil might be missing something tho – Bellator fighters just don’t fight that often. His per-fight rate might be great, but I’m guessing the frequency isn’t where it needs to be.

And now it’s all out in public, Dana’s going to fuck him.

Melendez to Bellator, and bitching about it in just over 12 months.

    Alpha – you’re a shields fan, I guess.

I am, he’s second to Machida on my favorite fighters list
