Daniel Cormier: I Finally Ate A Salad After 34 Years

For Daniel Cormier, slimming down to light heavyweight meant changing a few things.

Namely, his diet.

Cormier, who faces Patrick Cummins Saturday night in the co-main event of UFC 170, decided after his most recent fight to drop down to 205 pounds from heavyweight. He was the winner of the Strikeforce Grand Prix, besting former UFC champion Josh Barnett.

For “DC,” cutting out the weight meant adding in one certain food group.

“I didn’t have a salad in my entire life until this training camp,” said Cormier, during the pre-fight press conference earlier this week. “In 34 years, I had never touched salad. I had a few salads, and I started losing weight.”

Cormier, from Louisiana, added that salad just wasn’t something he grew up with as a child.

“We were home for Thanksgiving and my girlfriend made a huge salad,” Cormier said. “At the end of the day, that salad had not been touched. That’s the house I grew up in.”

Cormier will officially step to the scale later today, but told members of the media he was at 209 pounds on Thursday.

“I feel great,” he said. “I am going to make this thing easy.”
