Tonight’s UFC 170 pay-per-view card kicked off in the welterweight division as TUF: The Smashes champion Robert Whittaker took on Stephen Thompson. The two welterweights battled it out over one round that saw the South Carolina fighter have his hand raised in Las Vegas.
Thompson Floors Whittaker
Stephen Thompson threw his name into contention for a performance bonus as he landed an explosive TKO victory over TUF: The Smashes champion Robert Whittaker. While the Aussie is a talented striker in his own right, Thompson’s ability to counter with power neutralized his hopes for a victory. Thompson has now won three straight fights, while Whittaker has now lost two straight.
It was over when:
Thompson’s ability to strike with a lot of power and speed has made him a fan favorite in the Octagon for good reason. “Wonderboy’s” slick 1-2 counter combination put Whittaker into a tailspin he just could not escape before the referee saw enough.
Thompson could face the winner of Pyle/Waldburger in his next fight, while Whittaker could be a part of the UFC’s plans when they return to Australia.
