Tonight’s historic UFC 170 main event saw Olympic medalists Sara McMann and UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey meet in the Octagon. The two former Olympians battled it out for less than a round and the result saw the title retained by the champion tonight at the Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Rousey Crushes McMann

It had to happen at some point and for the first time in her MMA career UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey finished a fight with something other than an arm bar as she dropped Sara McMann with a solid knee to the liver. Rousey pressured early and McMann responded well with solid striking and by countering the judoka’s grappling. Rousey showed her ever evolving skill set however and used McMann’s defensive stance as an opening for some solid knees.

While the stoppage by referee Herb Dean seemed a bit fast, McMann was clearly injured by the final knee from Rousey. “Rowdy” has now won all nine of her professional fights, while McMann loses for the first time in her eight fight career.

It was over when:

If you have been around MMA long enough you have heard former fighter and MMA personality Bas Rutten talk at length about hitting the liver and that was the factor tonight. Rousey’s judo versus McMann’s wrestling was a matchup that really never materialized as the champ showed new facets of her game that prove she is far from going completely Hollywood.

What’s Next?

With Cat Zingano still recovering from both her injured knee and the loss of estranged husband, it seems that Alexis Davis is next in line for a title shot. For McMann, it is hard to predict where she will land with so much of the division tied up. If she did not sustain too much lasting damage from that knee she count return to action sooner rather than later.
