Bellator 112 Aftermath: Curran-Pitbull On Deck

Despite putting on an instant classic, Daniel Straus will not be given an immediate rematch with new Bellator featherweight champion Pat Curran.

Curran won back the belt at Bellator 112 Friday night with a fifth round rear-naked choke, regaining the title he lost to Straus last year.

Despite the bout earning early consideration for “Fight of the Year” by many, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney announced during the post-fight press conference that a rematch will not happen.

Instead, season nine tournament winner Patricio “Pitbull” Freire will challenge Curran. No date was set for that bout. Freire (21-2) is 4-0 since a 2013 split decision loss to Curran.

Freire had plenty to say on Twitter, even trying to ask a question for the press conference.

“Straus is a great fighter and really deserves a title shot later,” he wrote. “Screw the tournament. Bellator already showed it’s worthless.

“I feel sorry for the guys in the weight class who dream about fighting for the title.”

Curran (20-5) has earned seven submission and five knockout victories in his career.
