Raphael Assuncao was presented the chance to face UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao in May at UFC 173.
However, Assuncao had to decline due to a rib injury suffered in his victory earlier this year over Pedro Munhoz.
The title shot vs. Barao went to T.J. Dillashaw, a man Assuncao (22-4) actually defeated via decision last October.
“Because of my injury sustained….I could NOT take the fight for the title against Barao May 24 UFC 173,” Assuncao posted on Twitter. “I am Sorry!”
Most viewed Assuncao as the top contender to Barao (32-1), who has not lost since his pro debut several years ago. Even Barao spoke about likely facing him next.
