There isn’t much Donald Cerrone does that isn’t highlight-worthy, as evident by his numerous “Fight Night” bonuses won in both the UFC and WEC.
Saturday night, Cerrone did it again, dropping Edson Barboza with a straight jab and following up with a rear-naked choke to secure his 15th career submission victory at UFC on FOX 11.
Cerrone (23-6) tied Nate Diaz with 11 UFC/WEC lightweight wins, a record that he likely will have the chance to hold himself later this year. “Cowboy” has picked up three straight finishes since a 2013 loss to Rafael dos Anjos.
“I wanted to stand and give the fans the fight they wanted,” Cerrone said. “I saw he was hurt and tried to take him down before I thought, ‘What are you doing?'”
Once Cerrone jumped on the back of Barboza, there was no letting go, as he squeezed and forced the tap just three minutes into the first round.
The loss snapped a three-fight win streak by Barboza (13-2).
