UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones can move into a tie with Matt Hughes this weekend at UFC 172 if he can defeat Glover Teixeira and secure title defense No. 7.
Jones, who has talked openly before about moving up to the heavyweight division in the near future, now appears focused on maintaining his spot atop the 205-pound class.
“I have no interest at this point,” said Jones, of moving to heavyweight, during a conference call earlier this week. “There’s a lot of talent to test myself against (at 205).”
Along with meeting Teixeira this weekend, Jones (19-1) also has Alexander Gustafsson waiting in the wings for a rematch. Last year, “Bones” scored a decision victory over Gustafsson, but the bout was hotly debated after in regards to the scoring.
“People are interested in a rematch (with Gustafsson),” Jones said.
There are also contenders in Phil Davis, Daniel Cormier, Dan Henderson and Anthony Johnson positioning themselves for future title shots.
With a win over Teixeira, Jones will tie Hughes for third on the all-time title defenses list with seven. A victory would also place him behind only former champions Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre for most successful defenses of the UFC title.
