Light heavyweights Daniel Cormier and Dan Henderson will meet at UFC 173: Barao vs. Dillashaw next month. UFC president Dana White confirmed the fight on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” Wednesday.
Set for May 31 from Las Vegas, the card has received several changes over the recent weeks. The main event now features UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao against T.J. Dillashaw, while welterweights Robbie Lawler and Jake Ellenberger meet in another key main card bout.
Cormier (14-0) is a perfect 3-0 inside the Octagon, including a win in his 205-pound debut over Patrick Cummins earlier this year. He has also topped Frank Mir and Roy Nelson, and is likely positioned as the next-next contender if he defeats Henderson.
Henderson (30-11) snapped out of his funk with a knockout victory over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in Brazil recently. He now sports a 7-5 UFC record, but is just 1-3 in his last four overall.
UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones defends his belt against Glover Teixeira this week, and the winner of that is set to meet Alexander Gustafsson. The Cormier-Henderson winner could fall in line after that title bout is finished.
The bout will feature a battle of former U.S. Olympic wrestlers, and Cormier expressed his excitement about meeting Henderson on Instagram.
