Former UFC title contenders will meet under the World Series of Fighting banner in July, as Jon Fitch welcomes Jake Shields to the promotion. The fight was first reported by MMAjunkie.com.
Fitch-Shields will serve as the co-main event to a headline fight between WSOF lightweight champion Justin Gaethje and Nick Newell for World Series of Fighting 11.
Fitch (25-6-1) has gone 1-1 in his WSOF career and was scheduled to meet welterweight champion Rousimar Palhares at the card. However, due to a family medical condition, Palhares has removed himself from the planned fight.
After competing against Georges St-Pierre for the UFC title in 2008, Fitch compiled a six-fight unbeaten streak. In 2011, though, he was knocked out by Johny Hendricks. Fitch rebounded to defeat Erick Silva before losing to Demian Maia and being served his release by the promotion.
In his WSOF debut, Fitch was submitted by Josh Burkman in under a minute.
Shields (29-7-1) is a former Strikeforce champion who was released by the UFC after a loss to Hector Lombard this past March. The defeat was his first in five fights, as he went 3-0 with one no-contest after back-to-back 2011 losses to GSP and Jake Ellenberger.
There have been rumors that this card will air on NBC, as all previous WSOF events have been broadcast on NBC Sports Network.
