Former Strikeforce champion Josh Thomson will return to San Jose this July, taking on Michael Johnson in a key lightweight tilt at UFC on FOX 12. Officials announced the bout on Friday.
Set for July 26 from the SAP Center, the main card will air on FOX. So far, the only other fight confirmed will see Anthony Johnson take on Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.
At this time, neither Thomson-Johnson or Johnson-Nogueira are expected to be the main event.
Thomson (20-6) is recovering from a hand injury suffered earlier this year during a decision loss to ex-UFC champion Benson Henderson. The defeat dropped him to 3-3 in his last six overall, while he sports a 3-2 all-time UFC mark over two stints.
The 35-year-old Thomson was born in San Jose and continues to call it his home, fighting out of the American Kickboxing Academy gym.
Johnson (15-8) is an alum of The Ultimate Fighter and has won seven of his 11 Octagon bouts. The Blackzilian-trained “Menace” has defeated Joe Lauzon, Gleison Tibau and Melvin Guillard to break into the top-half of the UFC rankings.
Ironically enough, both Thomson and Johnson have been involved in Twitter battles with Nate and Nick Diaz. Thomson came under fire recently when he claimed his phone was stolen and comments were posted about the Diaz brothers, while Johnson has been asking for to fight Nate for several months.
