James Krause landed an early leg kick that forced the leg of Jamie Varner to eventually crumble under him at UFC 173 Saturday night.
Varner, who rolled his ankle three times in the first round, told the referee after the bell sounded that it was broken and he couldn’t continue. The replays were extremely graphic, showing how severely the ex-WEC champion rolled the foot.
Krause (21-5) improved to 2-1 since signing with the UFC. He was coming off a TKO loss to Bobby Green last November that snapped his eight-fight win streak.
“The very first kick I threw,” Krause said. “I felt it hit my shin. We worked this camp on kicking the calf so he couldn’t catch my kicks and take me down.”
Krause added that “Jamie is such a good competitor and it was an honor to fight him….I am sorry it ended like it did.”
Varner had to be helped to his corner after the fight, as he couldn’t put any weight on the leg. Despite the injury happening early in the first round, he continued to try and stand and trade with Krause, even checking several leg kicks that only continued to do damage.
Krause stated that he wants to just “keep fighting and getting better,” and that he has “no idea” where a win over Varner places him in the rankings.
Varner falls to 21-10-1 with the loss.
