For the second time in as many fights in Las Vegas, Al Iaquinta was submitted, as Mitch Clarke locked in a D’arce choke less than a minute into the second round Saturday night at UFC 173.
In the finals of The Ultimate Fighter, Iaquinta was choked out by Michael Chiesa. That was his last loss, as he had strung together three straight decision wins.
After losing the first round, Clarke (11-2) came out and was taken down. However, when Iaquinta went to improve his position, the Canadian saw an opening and took it.
“Don’t sleep on me,” Clarke screamed into the camera after the win. “I’m hear baby. Don’t sleep on me.”
Clarke is now 2-2 since signing with the UFC in 2011. He lost his first two fights to John Cholish and Anton Kuivanen, but has now rebounded with wins over Iaquinta and John Maguire.
“That submission was sick!!!” UFC president Dana White posted on Twitter. “Al Iaquinta was dominating him and another underdog wins.”
The submission loss was the third of Iaquinta’s career, dropping him to 8-3-1 overall.
