Which Nate Marquardt Shows Up In New Zealand?

Nate Marquardt and James Te Huna could be fighting for their respective UFC careers Saturday in the main event of UFC Fight Night 43 from New Zealand.

Both are coming off losses, and Jon Anik believes it is a win-or-go-home time for each fighter.

Anik, who is normally sent around the globe to announce UFC events for FOX Sports 1, will remain in the U.S. for UFC Fight Night 44 Saturday night from Texas.

“The great New Zealand fans have been barking for this show to come and it is exciting to usher in a new territory,” said Anik, during a recent interview with FightLine. “But when the Cub Swanson-Jeremy Stephens main event was announced (for UFN 44), I was praying for it.”

Marquardt (32-13-2) is a former Strikeforce champion but has lost each of his last three, with the past two defeats being first round knockouts at the hands of Hector Lombard and Jake Ellenberger. Te Huna (was stopped by Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in Decmber and lost via submission to Glover Teixeira earlier in 2013.

“I think it will be interesting to see Te Huna dropping down to 185,” Anik said. “He is the guy who put New Zealand on the UFC map and I think he will be motivated as ever to perform for those fans.

“With Nate, you never know what you are going to get. Some have called for his retirement, and while his form as of late has not been great, he can turn it on. Against Tyron Woodley, he looked outstanding.

“It will be an interesting main event because I think the loser puts themselves in a very bad spot.”

Other main card bouts include Soa Palelei-Jared Rosholt, Hatsu Hioki-Charles Oliveira and Robert Whittaker-Mike Rhodes.

We will have more from an interview with Anik later this week, including his thoughts on the Cub Swanson-Jeremy Stephens main event fight from San Antonio and the rest of the UFC Fight Night 44 card.
