For the second straight fight, Johnny Bedford left the Octagon upset.
Earlier this year, Bedford had what he thought was a win taken away when an accidental headbutt was ruled to have caused the stoppage vs. Rani Yahya. Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 44, Bedford was rocked by Cody Gibson and the referee stepped in, and Bedford was not happy.
The ref touched Gibson, which caused the fighter to look up at him and almost ask what he was going to do. After that went down, he had to stop the fight and award the victory to Gibson, which is his first inside the Octagon.
“It is what it is,” Gibson said. “If he wants to do it again, let’s do it.”
Jon Anik, sitting Octagon-side, stated that UFC matchmaker Joe Silva was “livid” at the decision, so a rematch could be in order.
For Gibson, though, the win was still a moment he’ll remember. He lost his UFC debut to Aljamain Sterling earlier this year after accepting the bout on short notice. He also took the Bedford fight on short notice.
“I hit him with an overhand right and saw his eyes roll back,” Gibson said. “He woke up when he went down. His eyes rolled back; I saw it.”
Bedford gave FOX Sports 1 an interview post-fight, stating, “I got caught, but this isn’t boxing. This is MMA. This is the UFC, you expect better referees.
“For this to happen (two times in a row) is ridiculous,” Bedford added. “They are taking food off my kids’ table. I was dazed, but I was never unconscious.”
