Joey Beltran Earns Bellator LHW Title Shot

Bellator light heavyweight champion Emanuel Newton will not be facing Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal or even Tito Ortiz for his next title defense.

Instead, Newton will meet Joey Beltran at Bellator 124 on September 12 from Detroit, officials announced on Tuesday.

The card will also see the conclusion of the light heavyweight tournament between Liam McGeary and Kelly Anundson. The main card airs on Spike TV from the Compuware Arena.

“I’ve been wanting to get back in the cage as soon as possible so I went to Scott Coker and he made this fight happen for me,” Newton said. “Beltran is a guy that always pushes the pace and looks for the finish, which plays into my style perfectly. I know he is coming off a nice win against (Vladimir) Matyushenko, and has been in this game for a while, so I’m excited for the fight and another chance to defend my belt.”

Newton (23-7) unified the titles when he defeated Attila Vegh via split decision in March. He became the interim champion with a decision win over Lawal last year.

Beltran (15-10) snapped a two-fight losing skid by submitting Matyushenko in April. He lost to Jackson last November and Fabio Maldonado in the UFC in October.

“I’m jacked to get this shot against Newton,” Beltran said. “He’s a tough guy, but I’ve been in this sport for a while now and have fought some of the best. I’ve got some good momentum after my last fight, and were going to put on a show September 12.”

More fights will be announced in the coming weeks for the card.

So their title contender is 1-2 coming into this fight with a submission over a guy who is 1-3 in his last 4. Seriously a worthy contender…

Worthy or not I like Beltran a lot, he is always there to fight and always going for it. That said I would guess none of the other big names were available for this fight.

it’s not very reassuring for Bellator fans is it. I genuinely can’t think of anything positive in this.
They may as well just drop the LHW division altogether if this is all they have.

    Just horrible, thanks Coker

So Cokers first official move as head of Bellator is to pull a UFC move involving a title shot with someone who’s 1-1..

About the only one I can think of in the UFC that got a title shot with a recent loss was TJ Dillashaw. So he was 1-1 in his last two, but other than his loss against Assunção he hasn’t lost since the TUF Finale against Dodson back in 2011. Over that same time span Beltran is 2-5-1 with that No Contest due to a failed PED test by Beltran. Granted two of those losses were at heavyweight, but that still makes him 2-2-1 if you ignore those.

All of that complaining aside, I’m still going to watch this fight. I just don’t understand the logic here. And what happened to “win the tournament to get a title shot”? I know they said they were going to start doing fights and rematches that fans were demanding like the rubber match between Alvarez and Chandler that fell through earlier this year, but I don’t think this fight really falls into that same category.

And I just read that Josh Grispi has been arrested for domestic abuse after beating his wife and letting his dog maul her. They found a pot farm and some guns and ammunition when they searched the house. According to the police report he’s plead not guilty to “two counts of assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of violating a restraining order, animal cruelty, malicious damage to a motor vehicle, drug possession to cultivate marijuana and improper storage of a large capacity firearm and rifle or shotgun near a child If this is true, he needs to be shot. You don’t lay your hands on a woman, you don’t let an animal attack someone, and you sure as hell don’t do both in front of a three year old child.

Hendricks, Sonnen, Nick Diaz, Edgar, Tate, Penn, there’s a lot more that got title shots with just one win after a loss too

    Shogun Also.

Wow that’s just a lot of craziness right there about Grispi

I completely forgot about all of those examples. I guess that’s what Belator is hoping we’ll do here. And they’re probably right.

I just don’t get why they are bothering with this fight though. I mean, just give Newton a couple more months off if there is no one to fight. Or get them to repeat the Vegh situation, where he was conveniently injured so Bellator could put on a better fight in Newton/King Mo. Make Anundson suddenly injured and give a title fight to McGeary, who is on a tear right now.
But for fuck sake don’t make your first title fight utterly pointless.

I wonder if it there isn’t some kind of stipulation that Coker has to have a certain amount of title fights, and they can’t risk pushing this one back.

IN OTHER BELLATOR NEWS: War Machine has once again been released by the organization, this time for Domestic Abuse. I just want to say I called this, I made the comment when him and Daley were both signed that I doubt they stay long because both keep having trouble with the law.

On a more personal off topic note, his significant other who were beaten pornstar Chirsty Mack, is very very ugly, she’s never been attractive to me.

In no way does this mean I condone her being beaten, no woman should have hands put on her..just saying, shes not pretty.

More came to light, here’s Christy Mack’s version, and with the pictures she posted, I’m leaning towards believing her. WARNING: the pictures are graphic, and she is a pornstar so her twitter feed is NSFW
