Fresno State University has announced plans to reinstate wrestling to the athletic department, according to a report by the Fresno Bee.
The Bulldogs have crowned three NCAA national champions and 33 All-Americans, including 2004 Olympic silver medalist Stephen Abas.
Many of the top UFC fighters today came from wrestling, including current champions Cain Velasquez, Jon Jones, Chris Weidman, Johny Hendricks and T.J. Dillashaw.
Fresno State cut wrestling in 2006 due to gender equality, but president Joseph Castro has worked hard to bring it back. To keep with Title IX, a women’s program will also be formed.
No timetable has been set for the official return of wrestling, but Castro said he expects to “make an announcement later this fall.”
“I want to stop saying we’re going to (reinstate wrestling) without giving people a timeline,” Castro said. “I think we’ll be ready to do that by later this fall.”
