Fight Replay: MacDonald Takes Out Former Contender

Rory MacDonald will try to secure his position as a future UFC welterweight title contender when he takes on Tarec Saffiedine in the main event of UFC Fight Night 54.

MacDonald, competing in his home country of Canada, will be looking for his third straight victory. That streak started with a win at UFC 170 over Demian Maia, which you can view in the video below.

Demian Maia vs. Rory MacDonald

Two welterweights looking to get back on track and move closer to a future title shot square off next, as Demian Maia meets Rory MacDonald.

Maia (18-5) is a former title contender at middleweight. After moving down, he won his first three 170-pound fights before an October split decision loss to Jake Shields.

MacDonald (15-2) had a five-fight win streak snapped by a split decision defeat to Robbie Lawler in November. He has defeated the likes of BJ Penn, Nate Diaz and Jake Ellenberger in his career.

Round 1: Maia gets a leg and snaps MacDonald to the canvas. Credit Rory for coming right out after Maia. Working to butterfly guard is MacDonald, while Maia advances his position on the ground. Nice elbows from the top by Maia, as he mounts MacDonald with three minutes to go. Pair of rights connect for the five-time BJJ world champion, who is setting up a submission right now, as he is trying to bait MacDonald into giving up his back. MacDonald explodes, working to get free, but is now pinned down again. Big cut under the left eye of MacDonald from the shots he has taken. MacDonald powers out and lands a huge head kick. Wild exchange from these two on the feet.

Round 2: Would have to expect MacDonald wants to keep this one on the feet, as he hammers off a huge kick. Maia shoots and MacDonald sprawls. MacDonald lands two head kicks that are blocked and fends off another takedown. Another nice sprawl to stay up right. Maia looks a little wobbly after a right, and MacDonald is on fire with his striking and takedown defense. He has Maia hooked, and just misses on a huge uppercut. Maia looks gassed out with three minutes to go in this round. One-two combo from MacDonald lands, as does two more lefts and Maia almost looks ready to go out. Two right rights and another head kick from MacDonald, but Maia has his bearings to himself now.

Round 3: The only takedown Maia scored on was that first one, as MacDonald has stuffed his last 11. Series of straight lefts and rights connect from MacDonald, who stuffs another takedown attempt and eats a series of rights. MacDonald gives up a leg trying to get a choke, Maia picks him up and takes him to the canvas with three minutes to go. Maia is bleeding all over MacDonald as he tries to advance his position on the ground. He gets too high and gets bucked off before trying to keep MacDonald down and gets tossed over his head. Back to the feet we go. Body shot from MacDonald and he defends another pair of takedowns. Just misses on a huge uppercut off another sprawl does MacDonald. Under a minute to go, Maia misses with a wild left and eats a pair of stiff rights. A flurry by MacDonald to finish the round.
