Joey Beltran is an American fighter, who currently fights with Bellator. The California native has been fighting professionally since 2007 and he sat down to talk about his first career fight.
Getting ready for his first career fight, Beltran trained for two steady months at North County Fight Club before his first fight occurred. His first career fight actually came as a surprise as it was on short notice. However, Beltran didn’t seem too worried about the short time before his fight happened.
“Myspace message that says hey, we’ve got a short notice fight that’s in 10 days for Strikeforce. It pays $1,200. That’s all I needed read and I was like sign me up, let’s do it,” said Beltran.
Beltran’s first fight came on February 10, 2007 against Yohan Banks.
“I saw his stats. He was like 6’3”, 270 [pounds], so I thought this guy could be really really fat, or he could look like Shawn Merriman, like an NFL linebacker. So I got up there and he 6’3”, 270 with a six-pack, and I was like oh shit, let’s do it,” said Beltran.
Although Beltran lost his first career fight against Banks, the loss did come in a decision, plus his opponent was much larger than him. Beltran will never forget that feeling of his first fight and will remember it for the rest of his life.
“I felt the crowd stand up, and the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, and it was just crazy. I remember that feeling and that’s the same feeling I go back for every single time. I got addicted, added Beltran.”
