For Johny Hendricks, the game plan never changes.
The UFC welterweight champion will defend his title for the first time tonight against Robbie Lawler in the main event of UFC 181. Earlier this year, “Bigg Rigg” won the vacant title with a decision victory over Lawler.
In that 25-minute contest, Hendricks suffered a bicep injury that limited his wrestling attack. He believes – 100-percent recovered – that he can do more with that this time around.
“I’m definitely going to threaten him with it,” said Hendricks, during a recent interview on UFC Tonight. “I don’t go in with the wrestling mentality. I try to set things up. If the opportunity is there, I need to threaten him with that.
“In the last fight, he got a little confident thinking he could defend my takedowns.”
A former standout wrestler at Oklahoma State University, Hendricks wants to better his first performance vs. “Ruthless.”
“He’s a very tough fighter, has heart, has good movement and we well-prepared for that fight,” he said. “Hopefully, I can showcase better skills this time and get a better win.”
FightLine will have complete coverage of Hendricks-Lawler and the rest of the card tonight.
