While it remains to be seen who the UFC will ask Anthony Pettis to fight next, following his memorable loss to Rafael dos Anjos earlier this month, the former lightweight champ clearly has an old rival in mind.
Pettis appeared on “The MMA Hour” recently to discuss his recent defeat, as we’ll as his future. While discussing who he might want to face next, the dynamic fighter stated (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“I haven’t thought about who I want to fight next,” Pettis said. “I can’t even say when I can fight next. But I would love to fight Nate Diaz. That’s a fight I’ve been waiting for, for a long time. If that’s next, I’m for sure down with that. I just gotta figure out when I’m able to fight again or when I can start even looking at dates to fight again.”
Any one who has followed Pettis and Diaz the last couple of years knows that the two have verbally sparred repeatedly, so it’s not surprising to hear “Showtime” say this. Ultimately, it could depend on whether the UFC wants Pettis to face a top contender next. Diaz isn’t currently ranked in the top 15, due to a recent run which saw him loss to Benson Henderson, Josh Thomson and most recently, dos Anjos.
That said, one would think Pettis-Diaz would certainly move some tickets for the UFC. Pettis is currently sidelined with a broken orbital bone he incurred during his UFC 185 bout with dos Anjos.
