Other “Cowboy” Shines At UFN 67 Brazil

Honestly, there is likely to only be one true “Cowboy” in MMA and that’s Donald Cerrone.

But for at least one weekend, Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira was able to hold that nickname high and proud after submitting KJ Noons at UFC Fight Night 67.

Stepping in on short notice, Oliveira weathered a few early shots by Noons before slamming him to the ground repeatedly. After the third takedown, the Brazilian – and former rodeo rider – locked up a hook and snapped his arm under the chin for the choke.

“I fought a very tough guy, a warrior,” Oliveira said. “I come in here and fight. I just want to keep fighting.

“I knew he was a striker and I couldn’t keep striking with him, so I knew I had to take it to the ground. We trained for this for a month and followed the strategy.”

Oliveira replaced Yan Cabral earlier this month, fighting again on short notice after stepping up and battling Gilbert Burns without a full training camp.
