Stipe Miocic Believes Andrei Arlovski’s a “Great Fighter”, But Says Title Shot Should be His

Recently it was revealed that either Andrei Arlovski and Stipe Miocic will scrap for the UFC’s heavyweight title next, and according to the latter, it deserves to be him.

Last weekend, Fabricio Werdum ended the reign of Cain Velasquez, by tapping the renowned fighter out with a third round, guillotine choke. Following the impressive win, it didn’t take people long to start questioning who Werdum would defend the title against first. Since former champ Junior dos Santos holds a win over Werdum, is the #2 contender, and started campaigning for a title shot, there was plenty of talk about whether it could be him.

Well, UFC boss man Dana White recently confirmed that since JDS is still recovering from injury, it’s going to be Miocic or Arlovski. Miocic recently attended a Q&A session in Berlin, and while doing so, he had this to say about the title shot picture (quote via Bloody Elbow.com):

“It was a good fight, both were going at it – Werdum came out on top. Y’know, I’m looking to get a shot now for my title shot,” Miocic said, while referring to Werdum’s championship victory at UFC 188. “So it’s great, it’s between me and him [Arlovski], it’s a 50/50 chance but hopefully I get a better chance than him. Y’know, he’s a great fighter, but I feel deserve it more than he does.”

It’s going to be interesting to see what direction the UFC goes here. From a rankings perspective, Miocic should be the guy, since he’s ranked #3 and Arlovski is #4. The well rounded fighter has gone 4-1 in his last 5 contests, and his only loss during that time was to JDS last December. The bout was extremely, extremely close, however, and Miocic lost it by split decision. Most recently, the heavyweight scored a one sided, stoppage win over Mark Hunt, who challenged Werdum for the interim belt last November and lost.

While Arlovski is only three fights into his UFC return, he has recorded memorable, stoppage wins over “Bigfoot” Silva and Travis Browne. Those type of victories really buzz the MMA masses, and because Arlovski is  a former champ, there’s an interesting storyline there. Arlovski also holds a 2007 win over Werdum, so, don’t be terribly shocked if “The Pitbull” gets the shot.
