Ryan Bader doesn’t believe Jon Jones should return and jump right into a title fight against Daniel Cormier for the UFC light heavyweight championship.
Following a fifth consecutive victory, Bader sees himself as the clear and undisputed No. 1 contender.
“What I think they (the UFC) should do, is they should wait…10 months…and give Ryan Bader this title shot,” said the fighter, during a recent appearance on Submission Radio. “(Jones) can come back and fight me once I get that. That’s what I think should happen.”
Bader (20-4) claimed a decision – all five of his wins since a loss to Glover Teixeira have been via decision – over former UFC champion Rashad Evans. He’s also downed Phil Davis, Ovince Saint Preux, Rafael Cavalcante and Anthony Perosh.
Jones, of course, was stripped of the title after his legal run-in following a hit-and-run incident in New Mexico. It is believed that officials will clear his return, and likely rematch with Cormier, who he beat earlier this year.
While many want Cormier-Jones again, Bader isn’t planning on turning down any fight for the title if it is presented to him.
“Title shots don’t grow on trees,” he said. “If you’re offered one, you gotta take that for sure. I don’t want to sit there and be baited into a fight that doesn’t make sense just to fight.
“My ultimate goal is to go out there and win that title.”
