Cain Velasquez will get another crack at Fabricio Werdum on February 6th, and by the sounds of it, the heavyweight champ is expecting the former champ to take him down…Yes, despite what transpired in their first meeting last June.
Werdum and Velasquez have been booked to fight again at UFC 196, following the latter’s submission win to “Vai Cavalo” at UFC 188. In that bout Werdum outscored Velasquez on the feet, and secured gold, by tapping the accomplished wrestler with a third round, guillotine choke.
It remains to be seen what kind of approach Velasquez will take in their rematch, but if it includes taking the fight down, Werdum has issued a warning. Recently the champ appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and the Brazilian star had this to say (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“And now, just asking Cain Velasquez, be careful with the right arm, it’s my specialty,” Werdum said. “Don’t come inside my guard, please, because, hey, be careful with the right arm.”
“The rematch, he (will) come very strong again,” Werdum added. “I think I have more confident this time. I think he come very good, for sure, 100 percent, but I beat him again, man. I’m not (cocky), you know, I’m just confident in my training. I’m confident in Kings MMA…”
And this is what makes Werdum so great. The 38 year-old made his way into MMA already possessing one of the best ground games on the planet, and over the years he’s added a nasty striking pedigree. It’s going to be fascinating to see how things play out. Will Velasquez be able to reclaim the belt? And prove he was ill prepared and rusty when he faced Werdum for the first time?
UFC 196 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The card will also feature former welterweight champ Johny Hendricks taking on Stephen Thompson.
