While the consensus is that Frankie Edgar will be booked to fight Conor McGregor soon, the waiting game that’s been playing out regarding the title fight, clearly isn’t sitting well with “The Answer.”
It’s been a few weeks now since McGregor bombed out Jose Aldo and Edgar took out Chad Mendes, but there’s been no word as to what’s next for “Notorious”. Prior to UFC on FOX 17 there was talk that McGregor could move up to 155 and fight for the lightweight title next. But, after Rafael dos Anjos quickly put away Donald Cerrone, the expectation was that McGregor – Edgar would be confirmed.
Well, that hasn’t happened yet, and during a recent appearance on “The MMA Hour”, Edgar had this to say (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“For sure, I’m pissed,” Edgar said, when asked if he’s upset with how things have unfolded in recent weeks. “I’ve been at it for a while now, I’ve been knocking on the door for this title shot for a while. It started with Cub [Swanson]. If Cub beat me he was promised a title shot. I beat him, I finished him in pretty dominating fashion and no, I’m not even considered for that title shot. I take it in stride. I do everything in stride, I really do think I’m a company man, but it’s not really panning out for me being that way.”
Edgar also relayed in the interview that he was told by Dana White at UFC 194, right after McGregor took out Aldo, that the latter could be given a rematch. That’s interesting news, since the UFC and White haven’t said much about that publicly at all. Edgar also added that he hasn’t called the UFC brass recently since they all “know” what he wants– a bout with the new featherweight champ.
It’s going to be fascinating to see how this goes and what fight the UFC goes with. It certainly has been oddly quiet on this front, so you can understand why Edgar said he’s preparing to be passed over again.
