Complete Recap From UFC On FOX 22

Urijah Faber

UFC on FOX 22 went down Saturday night from the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento and featured the future, the present and the past.

Former Invicta FC atomweight champion Michelle Waterson spoiled another main event for Paige VanZant, choking her out in the first round.

Waterson, nicknamed the “Karate Hottie,” locked in a rear-naked choke and VanZant went out. It was the second time in three fights that VanZant has fallen victim to the hold.

With the win, Waterson improved to 14-4 overall, 2-0 in the UFC and 8-1 over her last nine.

He may have less than half-as-many pro fights, but Mickey Gall proved he is more of a welterweight contender than Sage Northcutt at this point. Gall choked Northcutt out in the second round of the co-main event, concluding his 2016 with wins over CM Punk and “Super Sage.”

In what he has stated will be his retirement fight, Urijah Faber dominated Brad Pickett from the start. “The California Kid” made an emotional final walkout in front of his home fans, immediately attacking Pickett.

Faber, a former WEC champion who competed numerous times for UFC gold, dropped Pickett early on and was relentless in his approach. While he never stopped trying for the finish, Faber was unable to lock up his signature rear-naked choke, settling for an emotional decision win.

Decisions continued once the action shifted over to the main card on FOX, as Alan Jouban controlled Mike Perry for the win. Jouban knocked Perry down early and remained the aggressor, improving to 15-4 overall and 3-0 in his last three.

The prelims featured nine fights, with seven of them going to the scorecards.

One that did not was the FOX Sports 1 “main event,” as Paul Craig locked up an armbar on Luis Henrique da Silva to score a second round submission win. The other was also a featured bout, as Eddie Wineland stopped Takeya Mizugaki via strikes in the first round on UFC Fight Pass.

Mizuto Hirota earned a decision over Cole Miller in what is likely to be the final Octagon appearance for the veteran. Miller was very vocal in his displeasure with how he was treated after the UFC canceled an event he was set to compete on in the Philippines.

Colby Covington kept his winning ways intact, claiming a decision over Bryan Barberena. Alex Morono did the same vs. James Moontasri, as did Josh Emmett over Scott Holtzman and Leslie Smith vs. Irene Aldana.

Hector Sandoval claimed a decision over Fredy Serrano, while Sultan Aliev had the lone split decision, getting his hand raised vs. Bojan Velickovic to begin the night.
