Who Walked Away From UFC 215 With The Belt?

Valentina Shevchenko

For the second time in two meets, Amanda Nunes was declared the winner vs. Valentina Shevchenko.

Nunes made her second successful title defense Saturday night at UFC 215, scoring a split decision over Shevchenko in the main event. The card took place from Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Prior to defeating Miesha Tate for the title in 2016, Nunes claimed a decision over Shevchenko. She also defended the belt vs. Ronda Rousey this past December.

The card was supposed to feature Demetrious Johnson defending his flyweight title against Ray Borg, but Borg was forced out of the fight after coming down with an illness. Johnson was looking to set the UFC record for consecutive title defenses, as he is currently tied with Anderson Silva.

It is being reported that Johnson-Borg could be rescheduled for as soon as October.

In the co-main event, former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos locked in arm-triangle in the first and submitted Neil Magny. The 32-year-old dos Anjos has now won back-to-back fights since making the move to welterweight, having earned a decision in June vs. Tarec Saffiedine.

With Johnson looking on, Henry Cejudo made a statement in the flyweight division, finishing Wilson Reis in the second round. Cejudo, a former Olympic gold medalist in wrestling, put his boxing skills on display in picking Reis apart.

Cejudo rebounded from a TKO loss to Johnson for the title last year and a December split decision defeat at the hands of Joseph Benavidez. Reis was also finished by “Mighty Mouse” this past April.

In the light heavyweight division, Ilir Latifi topped Tyson Pedro and Jeremy Stephens earned a convincing decision win over Gilbert Melendez.

Stephens, who postponed his wedding after being offered the fight with Melendez, left the ex-Strikeforce champion bruised and battered after a series of leg kicks connected.
