This week’s installment of HDNet Fights’ Fight of the Week involves a battle between Team Holland and Team Germany from M-1 Challenge. Team Holland’s Gegard Mousasi (24-2-1) takes on Team Germany’s Steve Mensing (6-7-2).

Mousasi has really made a name for himself recently, taking DREAM’s Middleweight Grand Prix by storm and defeating Denis Kang, Dong Sik Yoon, Melvin Manhoef, and Ronald “Jacare” Souza on his way to winning the DREAM middleweight title. Mousasi will be appearing at the next Affliction show against former UFC light heavyweight champion and well known MMA fighter Vitor Belfort. Will Mensing play the role of spoiler and be able to handle the well rounded Mousasi? Or will Mousasi dominate him with his overall game?

Series II of Round 5 MMA collectible figures now has it’s fourth and final member: Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva.  Silva joins Sean Sherk, Rich Franklin, and Anderson Silva in the second series of these 6 inch collectibles. Series I is made up of MMA icons Randy Couture, Tito Ortiz, Matt Hughes, and Quinton Jackson.

The detail and artistry of these figures is the design of famous McFarlane artist David Cortes.

Personally, I find it interesting that they have included logos of each fighters main sponsor on the lil’ shorts. You can clearly see the logos of American Fighter, MMAOverload.com, Toe2Toe, and Sinister. Depending on the cost for this sponsorship, that is an excellent way to associate your brand with the fighter and the sport of MMA in general.

You can purchase the Series I figures in stores such as Champs Sports, F.Y.E., KB Toys, MMAWarehouse.com and a host of other toy collectible websites.  Series II will become available this holiday season.

FiveOuncesofPain.com first told you about these figures back in Oct 2007 and provided an update in June 2008.

Below are pictures of EliteXC’s Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano from the open media workout that took place this past Wednesday at Legends Mixed Martial Arts Training Center in Los Angeles, CA. Both fighters are the main draw for the third televised event under the “CBS Saturday Night Fights” banner.

The UFC has recently launched a consumer feedback service called UFC BackTalk. It is a web based survey tool allowing the UFC to acquire key feedback from its fans. They want to know stuff like what kind of fan are you (casual, hardcore), how long you’ve been a fan of MMA, if you watch other promotions, where you watch UFC pay-per-views, how you use UFC.com, and a bunch of other touch points for their product. As a marketer, I am a big proponent of customer feedback. And since the main demographic of the UFC fanbase is males 18-35, utilizing the internet to gather this data is a logical step.

In their most recent poll, about UFC 87, one particular question stuck out:

Please rank these fighters relative to one another with regards to how much you enjoy watching them fight.
– Cheick Kongo
– Cain Velasquez
– Brock Lesnar
– Frank Mir
– Gabriel Gonzaga
– Heath Herring
– Minotauro Nogueira

You can only vote for each fighter and ranking once; meaning only one fighter in the list can receive a 7 (most enjoyable to watch) and so on down the line to 1 (least enjoyable to watch). I found this particularly interesting for a few reasons:

Andrei Arlovski was in Chicopee, Mass., Saturday night hosting “Pavement Wars.” an MMA event put on by the National Amateur Fight League promotion. The fights were held outside, in a parking lot. This was a night of professional fights, with several fighters from the former Extreme Fighting International promotion on the card.

In the main event, Rhino Fight Team’s Mike Medrano won the vacant National Amateur Fight League welterweight title against local favorite Brenden Weafer by unanimous decision. Weafer, Full Contact Fighter Magazine’s 2007 Rookie of the Year, had his jaw broken by Medrano during the bout but hung on until the final bell.

The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior was released this past Tues, 8/19, on DVD and Blu-ray. Randy Couture plays the big bad guy in the flick, Sargon.

This clip is a behind the scenes look at one of the fight sequences in the movie. Enjoy.

In our second installment of HDNet Fights’ Fight of the Week, we have a classic brawl between light heavyweights from Maximum Fighting Championships 16. Jason Kuchera (3-2) and Aron Lofton (3-0), two relative newcomers to the mixed martial arts game, go at one another with everything they’ve got in a bloody war. This may not be the most technical fight in the world but it’s damn sure entertaining.

The two fighters are new to the sport which usually always makes for an exciting fight and this one does not disappoint. Kuchera, a Canadian fighter who occasionally trains with UFC fighter Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald, has devastated his previous competition in MFC with all three of his victories coming by way of TKO in the first round. In Aron Lofton, however, he faces an aggressive brawler who is a natural athlete. Lofton played collegiate football and started out in combat sports by entering Toughman contests so you can only imagine the fireworks that take place when these two brawlers step into the ring against one another.
