The UFC is not the only subsidiary of Zuffa to have recently recruited several former fighters from the now-defunct International Fight League, as multiple reports indicate that light heavyweight Alex Schoenauer has been signed to the promotion as a replacement for Mark Munoz against Steve Steinbeiss at WEC 36 on Sept. 10.

He joins Bart Palaszewski, L.C. Davis, and Wagnney Fabiano as IFL refugees that have been recently added to the WEC roster.

In addition to having competed in the IFL, Schoenauer also appeared on the first-ever season of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality television series in 2005. He competed for the UFC during the live season finale of TUF 1 on April 9, 2005, suffering a knockout loss at the hands of Mike Swick at just 20 seconds of round 1.

Schoenauer is 14-9, according to Sherdog’s fight finder, and last competed in April, where he recorded a split decision over Brendan Barrett during an IFL show at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J. He holds notable victories in his career over Allan Goes and Travis Wiuff.

It also appears as if WEC newcomer John Franchi is off the card as well with Jonathan Brookins reportedly now slated to face Jose Aldo.

WEC 36 will emanate from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. and will feature Urijah Faber defending his WEC featherweight title against Mike Thomas Brown along with WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho defending his crown against Chael Sonnen.

Casting arrangements for the eighth season of “The Ultimate Fighter” are currently underway. An open casting call was held in Boston last Thursday with several hundred hopefuls showing up to try out for the show. Light heavyweights and lightweights were both called to appear in front of Spike TV and UFC executives.

While some of the fighters that showed up for the open tryouts will be cast, most of the show’s participants usually come from video tape auditions.

While former IFL heavyweight Krzysztof Soszynski did not attend the tryouts, he received a call from the UFC to fly to Vegas, according to the Winnipeg Sun.

Soszynski received the call this past Friday just hours before he fought Marcus Hicks at Cage Wars 11. Despite some jitters upon hearing the news, Soszynski was able to bear down and dispose of Hicks at just 3:10 of round 1.

“It was huge,” Soszynski is quoted as saying in the Sun in regards to his first match in his hometown in nearly three years. “Maybe it wasn’t the slugfest they wanted. I had to play it a little safe, but I got the job done, which is the most important factor.”

It might be too early to speculate, but I couldn’t imagine Soszynski not getting picked for the show. A former body builder and pro wrestler, Soszynski entered the IFL with little MMA experience and was very green during his initial fights. However, during the latter half of 2007, Soszynski really showed signs of turning the corner. He has a look and the verbal skills needed to be a star in MMA if he gets the right exposure.

Incidentally, fellow former IFL fighters Dante Rivera, Mike Dolce, and Gerald Harris are all involved in the final cast of 16 for the current seventh season of “The Ultimate Fighter.”

FiveOuncesOfPain.com has learned through unnamed sources that Matt Lindland has significant changes planned for his Portland Wolfpack IFL team in 2008.

First, there is a chance that Krzysztof Soszynski from the LA Anacondas could drop down from heavyweight and represent the Wolfpack next season as their light heavyweight representative.

The Anacondas are in a bit of turmoil after the IFL released their head coach, Shawn Tompkins, late last week. IFL commentator and ex-Anacondas coach Bas Rutten will be working with Anaconda fighters that are scheduled for the upcoming World Grand Prix in the interim but a long-term successor has not been named.

There has also been numerous rumblings about Lindland bringing in a new heavyweight to the team. Apparently he’s touted this heavyweight as someone who could be the top heavyweight in the IFL next season. It’s been confirmed to 5 Oz. that the fighter is Brazilian. There is a lot of speculation that the fighter in question is none other than former UFC competitor Fabiano Scherner.

In other IFL-related news, the Florida Boxing Commission has approved the use of a ring for MMA events going forward. The IFL had to receive special permission to use its ring for tonight’s finals between the Silverbacks and the Pitbulls and there was concern that only a cage would be allowed for future events. The approval by the commission sets the stage for the IFL to run more events in Florida next year (and possibly add a new Florida franchise?).

For live blogging of tonight’s finals, remember to check out Ben Fowlkes’ blog by clicking here. Tonight’s finals will also be airing this Monday night at 8 p.m. ET on MyNetworkTV affiliates around the country (yes, it will be a quick turnaround).

I also wanted to remind everyone to check out my interview with IFL lightweight fighter Shad Lierley over at MMAjunkie.com.
