Not only was the defeat notable in nature from a historical perspective but also based on length and location, as Larson lost in less than ten seconds to the dismay of his fellow Minnesotans at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

Larson’s record dropped to 33-6 with the stoppage. He had gone 4-1 prior to the performance in his post-Octagon appearances including a quartet of finishes.

Pulling off the upset was Shark Fights veteran Eric Davila who has won four straight including a submission over Pete Spratt last September. He also holds wins over TUF alumni Richie Hightower and Lodune Sincaid.

Two other competitors with ties to the Ultimate Fighter also found success at EC 188, Paul Bradley and Tom Speer. The former scored his third consecutive victory via tap-out after locking in an Arm-Triangle Choke in the opening round of action against Eddie Larrea, while the latter made it four-in-a-row in the win column after outpointing well-rounded opponent Indalecio Tat Romero.

It wouldn’t be hard to imagine John Williams’ famous score from the movie “Jaws” echoing in Paul Daley’s mind as he stepped closer and closer to the Shark Fights 13 scale late Friday afternoon. The hard-hitting Brit measured in at three-quarters of a pound over the limit for his main card bout against Jorge Masvidal at the event and as a result will have a 10% bite taken out of the “to show” portion of his paycheck.

Comparably, Masvidal weighed in at 168.75 pounds and will be looking for a second consecutive win by beating the powerful striker. He is 20-5 in his career and most recently won a split decision over Naoyuki Kotani last April.

The evening’s main event between Keith Jardine and Trevor Prangley had no such stumbling blocks with both fighters actually coming in below the “205″ mark. Jardine registered in at 204.5 pounds, while sometimes-middleweight Prangley came in at 202.75 pounds.

Here is a complete rundown of results from the Shark Fights 13 weigh-in:

Pete Spratt (170.25 lbs) vs. Eric Davila (176.5 lbs)*
Karen Darabedyan (155.75 lbs) vs. Daniel Straus (152.75 lbs)
Devin Cole (233.25 lbs) vs. Aaron Rosa (241.75 lbs)
Paul Bradley (170.5 lbs) vs. John Reese (169.25 lbs)
Douglas Evans (144.25 lbs) vs. Ronnie Mann (144.75 lbs)
Brock Larson (170.75 lbs) vs. Tarec Saffiedine (169.75 lbs)
Joey Villasenor (185.5 lbs) vs. Danillo Villefort (184.5 lbs)
Paul Daley (171.75 lbs) vs. Jorge Masvidal (168.75 lbs)**
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (204.5 lbs) vs. Houston Alexander (202.25 lbs)
Keith Jardine (204.5 lbs) vs. Trevor Prangley (202.75 lbs)

* – Spratt agreed to a catch-weight bout with Davila
** – Daley will forfeit 10% of his “show” pay to Masvidal for the infraction

PRESS RELEASE / Amarillo, TX. – August 25, 2010 – Shark Fight Promotions announced today that UFC veteran Brock Larson will face Strikeforce sensation Tarec Saffiedine at the Shark Fights 13 pay-per-view event in September. “Shark Fights – Jardine vs. Prangley” will take place Saturday, September 11, at the Amarillo Civic Center in Amarillo, Texas.

According to Brent Medley, president of Shark Fight Promotions, “We feel that Larson and Saffiedine are a great addition to our pay-per-view roster. Larson, a seasoned UFC and WEC veteran, was originally slated for the under card, but we feel his bout against Saffiedine is worthy of live pay-per-view coverage. Larson is back on track and determined to make it back into the UFC. He knows that losing is not an option. Standing in his way is Saffiedine, an explosive MMA fighter that hails from Belgium.”

Medley went on to say; “Saffiedine is a well-rounded fighter and rising star in the Strikeforce welterweight division. He has fought in a number of promotions around the world including DREAM in Japan, and holds notable wins over PRIDE veteran Seichi Ikemoto, James Terry and Nate Moore. Both fighters are hungry for this win. Fans can expect an exciting, action packed fight to kick off the night!”

Larson (29-4-0), a seasoned UFC and WEC veteran, who trains out of Brooklyn Center, MN at the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy, has his sites on redemption and returning to the UFC. Larson kicked off his fight career in 2002 with an impressive twelve-fight win streak. He now boasts 29 wins in 33 MMA fights and has been featured on several recognized top-ten welterweight rankings throughout his career. Larson holds notable wins over top-notch fighters such as Mike Pyle and John Alessio and is currently riding a three-fight win streak.

Saffiedine (9-2-0) is a black belt in Shihaishinkai Karate, a style of Karate that includes striking, Judo throws, and ground fighting. He also boasts an amateur kickboxing record of 12-1-1. Saffiedine, who began his professional mixed-martial-arts fight career in his native Belgium, now trains out of Temecula, California at Team Quest. He is determined to gain MMA recognition in the U.S. and is well on his way. As a result of Saffiedine’s impressive second-round KO victory over Nate Moore at the Strikeforce Challengers 8 in Portland, many are referring to him as a breakout star in the Strikeforce welterweight division.

Here is a complete rundown of the “Shark Fights 13″ card:

Pete Spratt vs. Eric Davila
Ronnie Mann vs. Douglas Evans

With Josh Koscheck on the shelf due to a foot injury and unable to compete as scheduled at UFC 98 on May 23, UFC officials were forced to seek out a replacement to fight Chris Wilson.

According to a report by MMAjunkie.com, that replacement will be none other than former WEC welterweight title challenger Brock Larson.

Larson, 25-2, began his third tour of duty under the UFC banner by recording a submission victory over Jesse Sanders just 2:01 into last week’s bout at UFC Fight Night 18.

A product of the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy, Larson is 2-1 while competing in the Octagon. His UFC debut took place at UFC Fight Night 2 in 2005 and ended in defeat following a unanimous decision loss to Jon Fitch. He then made a triumphant return a year later at UFC Fight Night 7, defeating Keita Nakamura via unanimous decision.

Following his win over Nakamura, Larson then moved over to the Zuffa-owned WEC, where he compiled a career 4-1 record with notable wins over Erik Apple, John Alessio and Carlo Prater. Larson’s only loss in the promotion took place against then-WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit at WEC 29.

Larson will be facing an opponent in Wilson who is just 1-2 since debuting with the UFC at UFC 82 last March. A veteran of the IFL and the BodogFIGHT promotions, Wilson has a 14-5 overall record but has sustained losses to Fitch at UFC 82 and against John Howard at UFC 94 in January since being signed by the UFC.

A former member of Matt Lindland’s Team Quest who is known for his strong striking skills, Wilson’s first UFC victory took place at UFC 87 last August when he defeated American Top Team’s Steve Bruno via unanimous decision. Outside of the UFC, Wilson holds notable victories over former IFL welterweight champion Jay Hieron, current UFC welterweight Rory Markham, Pat Healy, and Ray Steinbeiss.

UFC 98 is scheduled to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The event will be headlined by Rashad Evans defending his UFC light heavyweight title vs. Lyoto Machida. In addition to Evans vs. Machida and Larson vs. Wilson, the televised portion of the card is also set to feature Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra, Sean Sherk vs. Frankie Edgar, and Yushin Okami vs. Dan Miller.

Non-televised preliminary bouts are expected to feature James Irvin vs. Drew McFedries, YoshiyukiYoshida vs. Brandon Wolff, Kyle Bradley vs. Phillipe Nover, Andre Gusmao vs. Houston Alexander, Tim Hague vs. Pat Barry, and Dave Kaplan vs. George Roop.

After a two-plus year absence, Brock Larson is heading back to the UFC.

The former WEC welterweight title challenger will join current WEC featherweight champion Carlos Condit as transfers from the WEC welterweight division to the welterweight division of the UFC.

And just like Condit, Larson is scheduled to compete at UFC Fight Night 18 on April 1, according to a new report by MMAjunkie.com.

The MMA Junkie report goes on to add that Larson is slated to make his return against newcomer Jesse Sanders.

Larson, a Minnesota native that trains out of the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy, is 24-2 in a pro career that began in 2002. His first and only bout in the UFC was a unanimous decision victory over Keita Nakamura during UFC Fight Night 7 in December of 2006.

In addition to his win over Nakamura, Larson also holds notable victories over Carlo Prater, John Alessio, Ryan McGivern and Erik Apple. His only losses have come against Condit and former UFC title challenger Jon Fitch.

Sanders, 20-4, earned his UFC roster spot by putting together a six fight win streak. A veteran of Monte Cox’s Extreme Challenge promotion, Sanders has accumulated 24 bouts on his resume in just three years of competition.

UFC Fight Night 18 will take place at the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tennessee. The two-hour Spike TV broadcast will be headlined by Condit making his UFC debut against Martin Kampmann and will serve as a prelude to the season premiere for the ninth season of The Ultimate Fighter.

There has been plenty of talk since Frankie Edgar’s loss to Gray Maynard at UFC Fight Night 13 that Edgar may be too small for 155 lbs. When we interviewed Edgar after that bout he said that he intended on staying at 155 and was looking to actually put on some weight to make him a little bit stronger and give him more size. Edgar has been blogging for USA Today leading up to his fight against Hermes Franca at UFC 87 on August 9 and he’s sticking to that plan according to his latest entry:

When I say I’ve been maintaining my weight, I’ve been heavier than I’ve ever been. I’ve been able to stay around 165 pounds during this whole training camp, and I haven’t dipped into 150s, which has been good for me, because I’ve been able to keep my size and strength up.

Cutting weight can be detrimental, so I’m on the fence about it. That’s why I’m trying to chip away and get a little bit bigger, a little bit more size and keep some strength as I go on. Hopefully after this fight, I can gain a little more size and by the time all is said and done, I’ll be a perfect 155.

But Edgar is in no way ruling out a move to 145 lbs. if need be:

Right now, I’m not thinking about fighting in a lower weight division. I’ve been fighting at 155 my whole career so I’m pretty comfortable there. But you never know what the future holds — I can make the weight at 145 pounds. When I wrestled in college, I usually weighed about 155 and cut to 141.

It was pretty clear in the fight with Maynard that one of the main reasons that Edgar lost was due to his lack of size and strength against the much larger Maynard. Maynard eventually was able to push the pace and throw Edgar around like a rag doll for much of the last two rounds. In my heart of hearts I truly believe that the best place for Edgar is at 145 lbs. but who am I to talk?

Edgar is 8-1 at the 155 lbs. weight class with wins over the likes of Tyson Griffin, Jim Miller, and Spencer Fisher. If he can keep some size and strength and still compete with the big boys at 155 then more power to him. That makes his victories that much more impressive.

MMA Junkie is reporting that UFC newcomer Razak Al-Hussan is expected to step in to replace Tomasz Drwal in a bout against former IFL fighter Andre Gusmao at UFC 87 on August 9th.

Both Gusmao and Al-Hussan will be making their UFC debuts. According to the report, no reason was immediately given for Drwal’s absence from the card. This would be the second time in a row now that Drwal has had to pull out of a fight in the UFC. He pulled out of a fight against David Heath in February due to a knee injury but it’s unknown if his absence from the UFC 87 card is at all related to the same injury.

Al-Hussan is a Midwestern prospect who carries an undefeated 5-0 record coming into the fight and four of his five victories have come by way of TKO or submission. Gusmao is also 5-0 in his career with four of his victories coming in the IFL.

Cummo, 6-5 lifetime, according to Sherdog’s fight finder, gained great notoriety for his appearance during the second season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” where he fought and lost to Joe Stevenson in the finals of the welterweight tournament.

Cummo, who is 3-3 lifetime in the UFC, last fought in March at UFC 82, where he lost to retired Marine Luigi Fioravanti via unanimous decision.

McCrory is one of the youngest fighters in the UFC but is already a veteran of nine career fights. He’s won eight bouts compared to just one loss, which he suffered in his last bout for the UFC against Akihiro Gono last November at UFC 78.

Soon after sustaining the first defeat of his career, McCrory informed UFC V.P. of Talent Relations Joe Silva that he was looking to take a brief hiatus from the sport in order to focus more on education.

UFC 87 will take place at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn. and will feature Georges St. Pierre defending the UFC welterweight title against Jon Fitch. Bouts between Brock Lesnar and Heath Herring as well as Kenny Florian vs. Roger Huerta are planned as well.

Gusmao’s opponent for the event has yet to be determined, according to Martin.

The UFC had previously attempted to sign Gusmao and it was reported by several news outlets that he would make his UFC debut this past February at UFC 81 against David Heath. However, FiveOuncesOfPain.com broke the news after speaking with IFL officials that the New York-based fight promotion held an exclusive negotiation period in its contract with Gusmao that prevented him from consummating an agreement with another organization.

With that exclusive negotiation period having apparently expired, the Brazilian-born fighter is now an unrestricted free agent and able to sign elsewhere.

Gusmao is undefeated in five pro fights and if reports are accurate, he could join a young nucleus at 205 pounds in the UFC that already includes Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, and Thiago Silva.

The report indicates that there are plans to possibly match Franca up with Frankie Edgar. FiveOuncesOfPain.com has learned that the match is not yet signed, but all indications are that it will likely be finalized soon.

Franca was released by the UFC several months back, per his request, but he stated soon after that it was his desire to rejoin the promotion once he was eligible to fight again. He is suspended through July 5 by the California State Athletic Commission after testing positive for the steroid drostanolone following his decision loss to Sean Sherk at UFC 73 last July.

Edgar last fought in April at UFC Fight Night 13, where he suffered the first loss of his pro career following a unanimous decision loss to Gray Maynard.

UFC 87 is scheduled to be headlined by a match featuring UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre defending his title against Jon Fitch.

According to a report over the weekend by MMAjunkie.com, welterweight fighter Karo Parisyan has been added to the card for UFC 87 on August 9 at the Target Center in Minneapolis, MN.

The site did not report an opponent for Parisyan, but indicated that George Sotiropoulos was the original choice but that he was unable to accept the bout due to injury.

Parisyan had indicated on “Inside MMA” last December that he was in line for a shot at the welterweight title. However, he elected to fight before it was his time to receive his shot and he lost his opportunity to fight for the title following an upset loss to Thiago Alves at UFC Fight Night 13 this past April.

For Parisyan, he is viewing his match at UFC 87 with a sense of urgency.

“At this point in my life I’m trying to change a lot of stuff in my life,” Parisyan is quoted as saying by MMAjunkie.com. “It’s either do or die for me now. God forbid. I can’t handle two losses in a row.”

UFC 87 is scheduled to be headlined by a match featuring UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre defending his title against Jon Fitch. Bouts between Brock Lesnar and Heath Herring and Kenny Florian vs. Roger Huerta are on tap as well.

The news was first reported on Monday by our friends at MMAjunkie.com.

Since losing the TUF 5 final against Nate Diaz due to a shoulder injury, Gamburyan has gone 2-0 in the UFC with submission wins over Nate Mohr at UFC 79 and Jeff Cox at UFC Fight Night 13.

A welterweight clash between Team Quest fighter, Chris Wilson and UFC debutant Steve Bruno, originally set for July’s UFC 86 has been postponed to August’s UFC 87 according Wilson’s personal website.

From ChrisWilsonMMA.com:

I just found out my fight has been postponed. The rescheduled date hasn’t been finalized but appears to be bumped to the next UFC show, UFC 87 headlined by St. Pierre vs Fitch in Minnesota of all places. What a great card to fight under, eh?

In the end, it is frustrating to have to wait longer to get paid but it will give me more training time coming off of the birth of my daughter so it’s probably for the best. Frankly, I’m just glad to fight, period. I guess I can wait one more month.

Any chance Bruno had of fighting me before I got back into shape has just vanished. Bruno’s fanboys will be terribly distraught when he gets destroyed

No word yet as to why the bout has been postponed but I’m sure a reason will surface in the coming week.

UFC 87 is headlined by a welterweight title fight between current champion, Georges St. Pierre and the very tough, Jon Fitch. A No.1 contender match-up in the lightweight division between Roger Huerta and Kenny Florian is also set as well as the return of Brock Lesnar against Heath Herring.
