Snap!

It was one of the most gruesome moments in the history of the UFC. There were many theories on how the bout would unfold but none of them included Corey Hill‘s shin bone snapping in half like a tree branch after colliding with the shin of Hartt.

It wasn’t the way the native of Bangor, Maine wanted to win that bout. He felt like his back was up against the wall in the fight with Hill, one more loss would have equaled an uncertain future with the biggest fighting promotion on the planet.

Hartt will finally have his chance to show the world that he’s in the UFC to stay this Saturday evening when he faces off with the Russian-German Dennis Siver. Siver is fresh of of a “Knockout of the Night” performance over Nate Mohr at UFC 93.

After getting his foundation in MMA with Marcus Davis in Maine, Hartt recently made the exodus where he trained at elite gyms such as Cobra Kai and Xtreme Couture. For this bout Hartt has made the trek out to Albuquerque, New Mexico to train with none other than Greg Jackson and his gym of killing machines.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com had the chance to catch up with Dale in the days leading up to what can easily be considered the biggest fight of his young career and discussed being roomies with Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Leonard Garcia, walking around Wal-Mart with his face busted up and his desire to ‘punch Siver’s teeth in’.

Cory Brady for FiveOuncesOfPain.com: How are you feeling physically heading into your fight with Dennis Siver?

Dale Hartt: I’m feeling pretty good. I have a few nagging things but that’s normal. My shin was bothering me before my fight with Corey Hill and look how that one turned out.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: Well if your shin was bothering you before the Corey Hill fight, may I suggest that you bust up your elbow or fist for this one?

Dale Hartt: (Laughs) Mess up my elbow. Yeah, I’ll make sure to go in there with a [expletive] up elbow! If that works I’m going to [expletive] myself up before every fight (laughs).

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: I know you’ve been training with Greg Jackson for this one. How did you end up hooking up with Jackson’s MMA after training at Xtreme Couture for a while?

Dale Hartt: I met Greg once before when Marcus Davis fought in Houston, Texas. I met Greg there at the weigh-ins. I talked to him a couple of times after that and I ended up liking him a lot. Also, Marcus normally corners me, and obviously he won’t be able to corner me because he’s fighting Dan Hardy at the same event that I’m fighting at, so I was trying to figure out who the best cornerman was in the game, and on top of that I like Greg. Everyone is like a family down here. I’m not going to lie to you, Jackson’s is going to be my home.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: I heard you’ve been rooming with none other than “The Cowboy” Donald Cerrone. How did that end up happening?

Dale Hartt: Yeah, it’s almost like The Ultimate Fighter house. Cowboy and Leonard Garcia have a house and I’ve been staying with them.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: Both of them are very cool, down to earth guys. How has staying with them been working out for you?

Dale Hartt: Yeah, they’re both phenomenal guys. I didn’t realize how good of training partners they both were until I got here, and they’re both amazing to train with. It’s been unbelievable.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: You guys ever get into any three way tag team matches in the living room or anything like that?

Dale Hartt: No, not really but I can tell you this though. Cowboy’s cousin lives here and he’s kind of young and dumb. So he’s been talking mad [expletive] about his crazy basketball skills until Cowboy beat him down in basketball and he had to be his slave for a week. He’s been doing push ups all over the place and doing Cowboy’s laundry. I wouldn’t want to be Cowboy’s slave, I can tell you that for sure.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: Has living there with those guys helped you to stay extra focused on your training for this upcoming bout with Dennis Siver?

Dale Hartt: It’s good because Cowboy had his fight a week ahead of me so we were really focused on that. Everyone just wakes up and trains together so it helps a lot.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: Going back to that fight with Hill, what ran through your mind when you saw his leg snap? Did it make you kind of sick at all?

Dale Hartt: All I know is that it ruined my buzz. You know, when you fight you get this crazy adrenaline rush and you can just feel all of this crazy [expletive] just flowing through your veins. Even for like three day after I fight I am just the happiest guy on the planet. I’m just so chill and I usually have a smile from ear to ear, and when I saw Corey’s leg it just ruined it for me so I’m kind of pissed at him for that. I felt bad for Corey. I don’t feel guilty, but I feel bad for him. Looking back on it I would have liked to beat him by punching his face in. In this fight I just want to punch Siver’s teeth in. Everybody gets free dental in Germany. Our gameplan is to test his mouthpiece durability.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: How do you feel you match up with Siver?

Dale Hartt: Well I think I’m going to be a little bigger than him. I’ll be a little taller and probably a little fatter. I think that Dennis is a good kickboxer, he has great kicks, a good overhand right and left hook. He has good takedowns in the clinch and he doesn’t shoot very often but his shot seems pretty nice. That’s kind of where I’m at with him. I think that he’s fit and strong on the ground but he doesn’t really have the best technique necessarily. I think that he’s training with good guys in Las Vegas so I’m sure that he’s improved quite a bit and I’m expecting a tough fight. I’ll bet you money right now that him and I get “Fight of the Night”. I had a dream where him and I get “Fight of the Night”. Plus you get to walk around Wal-Mart with your face all beat up. People are trying to look at you but make it seem like they’re not looking at you, it’s great.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: Absolutely, I know during sparring from time to time I’ll allow myself to get hit with just a few good ones so I can look like a bad ass at Wal-Mart.

Dale Hartt: (Laughs) You can’t get away with that [expletive] down here, they’ll kill you man. I’m not going to let them hit me.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: Well yeah, but I’m not training at Greg Jackson’s right now either.

Dale Hartt: Man, I went in tired yesterday and I went a couple of rounds with Joey Villasenor. Just in the first round Joey must have punched me at least thirty times in the face.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: He’s in full on fight mode right now too. I know he’s training for his upcoming fight with Cyborg, and doesn’t he have something like thirty pounds on you?

Dale Hartt: Yeah, it’s like thirty or forty pounds. He’s a tough guy. Joey’s a great guy too.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: So I heard Siver has been training at your former gym Xtreme Couture. How do you feel about that.

Dale Hartt: Yeah, I fly out and he flies in, the [expletive]. That’s made me a little irritable, I won’t lie to you.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: Did he know that you were leaving and that’s why he came to town?

Dale Hartt: I don’t know man, but it was like down to the day. I went to Albuquerque and like three days later he’s in Vegas. The funny thing is that I know that here are probably some guys down there giving him the scoop on me, but I have my buddies down there that are training with him every day telling me everything he’s doing (laughs). I have the camera at Xtreme Couture on him right now and I’m watching him training (laughs). I watch him training every day. I figured out how valuable that little training camera is for someone that’s fighting you.

Shawn Tompkins is one of the foremost authorities in MMA on the art of striking and thanks to Jake Hattan, one of his managers at Denaro Sports Marketing, FiveOuncesOfPain.com was recently granted an opportunity to interview the Xtreme Couture striking specialist.

In Part I of our interview, Tompkins discussed the preparations he’s current making in getting four fighters ready for Affliction’s “Day of Reckoning” on Jan. 24; his thoughts on whether Vitor Belfort has enough left to make a run a major middleweight title; and his feelings about famed boxing trainer Freddie Roach’s assessment of Fedor Emelianenko’s striking.

Sam Caplan (FiveOuncesOfPain.com): You’re a pretty busy many these days as you are helping multiple fighters get ready for Affliction’s “Day of Reckoning” on January 24. Can you talk a little more about that?

Shawn Tompkins: I’m in the middle of one of my biggest training camps that I have ever had to date. I’ve got Mark Hominick, Chris Horodecki, Jay Hieron, and Vitor Belfort all preparing for big fights on January 24 for the Affliction card. We’re full steam ahead and we’ve got about three weeks left as of today. It’s all going good and everyone is healthy, which is the key.

Sam Caplan (FiveOuncesOfPain.com): Belfort is such an interesting case. He’s had so many ups and downs in his career and is a former UFC light heavyweight champion. He comes out of Brazil and trained there for years and I wanted to know how you came about working with him?

Shawn Tompkins: Vitor wanted to come out originally to work with Randy Couture because Vitor has really turned to religion and he really respected the way Randy carried himself as a human being.

Ultimately, that’s what made him decide to come to Las Vegas. At the time I was working with Wanderlei Silva and a couple of other Brazilians that I was starting out with as well and my success as an MMA coach got back to him. He had his management connect with me and we worked together for a couple of days and see if it would go together. We’ve worked great together ever since.

Sam Caplan (FiveOuncesOfPain.com): Vitor has made the move to 185 and he’s still in his early 30s. However, he’s been in so many wars over the years that he might be old for his age and I wanted to ask if you felt if he has enough left in him to make a run at a middleweight title?

Shawn Tompkins: Absolutely. And I’ve been telling people this since the last Affliction card where everyone has been like “Wow, the old Vitor is back.” I truly believe that it’s not the old Vitor and it’s a brand new Vitor that is more determined and more motivated. I think the 185 pound division causes him to have to work harder between fights and maintain.

It’s also been a long time since Vitor has had a real team behind him. I think where Vitor went well in the past is that after he had some success — and this has happened many times with other fighters — he surrounded himself with people that just say “You’re the greatest! Everything you do is perfect! You’re good — you’re good” and they don’t push him. And they don’t set it up and he has to come into the gym and do what he has to do rather than what he wants to do. I think he’s really matured and changed in that way.

As far as his body holding up, he’s a physical specimen. He doesn’t carry his age through any of the wars that he’s had. Sure, he’s had some tough fights but I don’t think he’s had any wars that will feed on him later in his career.

Sam Caplan (FiveOuncesOfPain.com): You mentioned Chris Horodecki at the top of the interview and he” be fighting Dan Lauzon on Jan. 24. He’s come out and promised a surprise for Lauzon and while I know you can’t give the surprise away, can you give us a hint as to what we can expect?

Shawn Tompkins: What people are going to see ultimately is a more well-rounded Chris Horodecki. He gained a huge fanbase during his IFL days but I was really doing Bas Rutten a favor by putting Chris Horodecki in there at such a young age. Obviously, it worked very well for Bas and I and Chris. But now since April we’ve had some time to really just sit down and focus more on his training and career and round him out more so that he’s not just a kickboxer.

He’s a great kickboxer but we really spent a lot of time on improving his ground game as far as his jiu-jitsu and his wrestling. If anybody looks at Dan Lauzon, that’s his strength. I think we’re doing a really good job with our training of Horodecki. He’s a great kid and he’s a single-minded person. He knows what he’s good at and he knows what he needs to get better at.

Sam Caplan (FiveOuncesOfPain.com): Horodecki is one of the best fighters in the world under the age of 22, yet he’s got several years of experience. How young was he when he came to you?

Shawn Tompkins: Chris and I started working together when he was 12 years old. I tell people this a lot, and he does too, we’ve got a real father/son relationship. We’ve won together and we’ve lost together. So there’s nothing we haven’t seen and we both know that there’s a lot of room for improvement and I’m always very excited in his fight camp when I put them together because I take them very personal and I always like to see him improve.

Sam Caplan (FiveOuncesOfPain.com): The main event on that card is Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski and famed boxing trainer Freddie Roach recently broke down Fedor’s striking in an interview with SI.com. He specifically talked about how Fedor strikes from a flat footed position and he also indicated that he felt his aggressive nature could be used against him. What is your assessment of Fedor as a striker and do you agree with what Roach said?

Shawn Tompkins: First of all, I respect Freddie Roach more than any other trainer in the business and that’s in boxing and martial arts. When he says something it’s generally gold. But I will go against him in a way where he says Fedor’s punching isn’t technical and that it isn’t good because obviously, he’s the greatest. There are some cases with certain people that when everything they do wrong turns out right and that’s what you have in Fedor.

As far as an aggressive nature with Arlovski, I think that’s a positive for Fedor. If you look at the past with Arlovski, when he doesn’t do well is when he gets hit and gets hurt and that’s when Arlovski falls a part. He’s a very confidence-driven fighter. He needs to be winning in order to do well and look good.

I just can’t see Arlovski winning the fight. I think it’s a really bad fight for him but I think it’s a fight that he has to do. Best of luck to him, obviously, and I think Freddie Roach is a great trainer and I have respect for him at the upmost but I just don’t think he understands Fedor like the rest of us in the MMA game do.

On Wednesday night Dale Hartt will have his chance to redeem himself in the octagon with a win over Corey Hill at the UFC’s “Fight for the Troops” card. After going undefeated while finishing all five of his opponents, Hartt suffered his first defeat in his UFC debut at the hands of the more experienced Shannon Gugerty by rear naked choke. The exciting lightweight knows very well that an 0-2 record in the UFC would mean that he would have to work his way back up the lightweight ladder in a different organization. He has done everything in his power to prevent that from happening.

Hartt told FiveOuncesOfPain.com in an exclusive interview that he started packing his things immediately after his loss to Gugerty and made the move to the MMA training capital of the world, Las Vegas. The Bangor, Maine native left Marcus Davis and Team Irish to ensure to himself that he would not be able to offer up any excuses after he leaves the Octagon on Wednesday night. Alternating between Xtreme Couture, Cobra Kai, Master Toddy’s and Phillipi Sports institute has turned the young fighter into a virtual sponge of MMA technique that he hopes to showcase with an impressive performance in the most pivotal bout up until this point in his career.

Cory Brady: What are your thoughts on Corey Hill?

Dale Hartt: I think Corey poses some very unique challenges just based on his physical dimensions. I’ve been setting up a Corey Hill dummy at the gym and the first time I set it up I was like “Holy [expletive]!”. I was trying to figure out how long his arms were so I set it up to be as tall as he is and have the same reach and it’s crazy. He has some crazy dimensions.

Cory Brady: Is it hard to find guys with the same body type as him to train with?

Dale Hartt: It is. Especially as light as he is. Luckily I live in Las Vegas which is the MMA training capital of the world. I have a really good stand up guy I scrounged up. He’s 6’3″ and I think his stand up is a lot better than Corey’s. I’m banking on it. Then I have another really good guy to roll with that’s like 6’8″. I’ve rolled with VinnyMagalhaes a little bit but he’s not skinny like Corey. He’s been giving me a lot of thoughts and helping with my gameplan for Corey. I think there are a couple of areas that are problem areas with Corey Hill. There are a couple things I have to be really careful about and as long as I stay away from those things I should be successful.

Cory Brady: So I know you have been training at Master Toddy’s, Xtreme Couture and Phillipi Sports institute. How are you breaking up your training between the three places?

Dale Hartt: I don’t eat or sleep. No, I had to cut it down because for a while I was going to three places every day. I was getting up in the morning and I would hit pads at Master Toddy’s or I would be at thePhillipi Sports Institute then I was going to Xtreme Couture at 4:00 pm and I would go to Cobra Kai at night.

Cory Brady: How were you able to keep up that kind of pace with your training?

Dale Hartt: I was like the walking dead. I was doing that for like three weeks and I just died. I wasn’t performing that well so I cut it down to two a day for the most part. I alternate now. I got to Master Toddy’s four times a week in the morning, I go to Phillipi Institute twice in the morning and twice at night and then I’ll go to Xtreme Couture for the rest. I’m going to pick back up at Cobra Kai once I’m done with my fight.

Cory Brady: What are some of the things that you have to capitalize on to win this fight?

Dale Hartt: I think I have to capitalize on controlling the distance. I feel like controlling the distance and the angles are essential to my victory. I think I have to stay away from Corey’s right hand. I need to minimize that. If he hits me a couple of times it’s not the end of the world but I think I have to minimize that and I need to stay off of the cage.

Cory Brady: How do you visualize the fight with Corey ending?

Dale Hartt: I think Corey’s a tough kid and I think he’s tenacious but I don’t think he has been in too many crappy spots in his life. I realize that he worked at Wal-Mart which is pretty crappy and he’s supported his family and he seems like a good guy but I just don’t think he’s been in the trenches of crap like I have. I just think that mentally he will break. I have to be honest, I’ve had my ass kicked like a thousand times and I’ve never broken once so I don’t think he can break me. He’s not going to do anything to me that I haven’t already had done to me.

Cory Brady: Do you think that this is definitely a do or die fight for you as far as the UFC is concerned?

Dale Hartt: Oh absolutely. I have no doubt about it. I don’t know if he’ll be sent home. A lot of people think that this is a do or die fight for the both of us. I know it’s a do or die fight for me but it’s probably 50/50 for him depending on how he looks in defeat.

Cory Brady: Do you feel like you need to not only win but win impressively to make a statement in the UFC?

Dale Hartt: I think the most important thing is to win. I don’t want to be a boring fighter but at this point if it came between having a boring fight and winning, I’d rather win. I have to be honest, being boring isn’t really in my nature. I’m kind of a go for broke kind of guy but just technically speaking I’d rather have a boring fight and win with the UFC then have an exciting fight and get booted. I try not to focus on the results and not the process. I’m focusing on the changes I have needed to make and setting myself up for success. I’ve been working hard and doing really good in training so we’ll see.

Cory Brady: What were some of the factors that came into play with the loss in your UFC debut against Shannon Gugerty?

Dale Hartt: I won’t lie to you. The Gugerty fight was the worst performance of my life. I didn’t think I would get the UFC jitters but now that I look back at it I was definitely getting some UFC jitters. The thoughts I was having during that fight were not thoughts that I normally have and they were not good thoughts. I wasn’t letting things happen. I was trying to force them. When I was in my guard I was being reactive instead of proactive. I think in any position in MMA you have to be proactive. You can’t wait for the other guy to do things, you have to make them happen and I wasn’t doing that. I don’t blame anyone for that loss but myself. The biggest thing for me was when Shannon had me on my back, I was all set there. I was totally calm. He didn’t hurt me once but in my head I was thinking that I was having a boring fight. I kept thinking in my head “You’re having a boring fight. You’re having a boring fight” and I was so petrified that the UFC was going to be unhappy with me. I just said screw it and just tried to roll over and when I did he took my back. I tried to roll over and “Chuck Liddell” it. Like just get to my knees and stand up but I didn’t have the Chuck Liddell skills.

Cory Brady: So you think because you were so worried about putting on an exciting performance it may have cost you that first win in the UFC?

Dale Hartt: Yeah. I realize that the UFC runs an entertainment business and I realize that everyone wants to have an exciting fight but for his one, lets just get a win out of the way. I’m sweating bullets because there’s so much riding on this. I really like fighting in the UFC and I don’t want to go anywhere so lets just get this win and then we’ll focus on being exciting from there. I just want this win and then I’ll start rocking and rolling. I have no worries about my skill and desire I just want to allow myself to be able to showcase those things.

Cory Brady: Did the loss have anything to do with you leaving Team Irish and making the move to Las Vegas to train?

Dale Hartt: I was getting ready to move anyways but the day I lost to Shannon I was already packing my stuff. I moved as fast as humanly possible. Bangor, Maine is great and Marcus Davis is awesome. He is such a smart MMA guy. He has a really analytical mind and he’s really focused on the details. Especially with his boxing. He’s so good with the details of punching, it’s phenomenal. He has helped me so much and he’s still helping me here because there are still things that I need to fix and I know in my head what I need to do. Marcus is just an unbelievable coach in that way. Where my problem lies is that most of the guys are bigger than me and when Marcus is gone there’s nobody near my size to train with. When Marcus would leave I would be left with nothing but 205′ers to train with. I’ll never say a bad word about Marcus or Team Irish. It’s an amazing place to train and it got me to the UFC. Lord willing I’m going to give Marcus his first student UFC victory. This is what I wanted to do with my life and I didn’t want to make excuses up, I wanted to make a solution and that’s why I came to Las Vegas.

Cory Brady: What are some of the benefits you have already noticed since moving to Las Vegas?

Dale Hartt: You have so many looks out here and just so much talent. When I go to Xtreme Couture’s the only day I can’t find someone to kick my butt there is Christmas. I have grown so much since coming here but it’s not only that, I’ve really seen my growth potential. Las Vegas can take you as far as you can go. I call Cobra Kai the “snake pit.” I get such good rolls every time I go there. It’s like all out war most of the time with those guys. That kind of attitude is developing some really talented grapplers down there. Master Toddy’s has some really beautiful muay thai. Everything is really good out here.

Cory Brady: Is there anyone you want to thank?

Dale Hartt: I really want to thank CombatFitness.us, MMA Fan Shop, Ranger Up, Complete Fighter and Respek Fightwear.com.

One of the three bouts announced is a fight between recently signed Pride standout, Takanori Gomi and UFC veteran, Duane Ludwig.

Gomi has not fought since last February where he lost via gogoplata submission to Nick Diaz at Pride 33. That fight however was later ruled to be a no contest after Diaz was found guilty of taking marijuana.

Ludwig was rumored to be fighting on the Strikeforce card in February against Steve Berger but apparently he will pass up that fight so he can be in fighting shape for the World Victory Road event.

The other two bouts apparently set for Sengoku are, UFC and Bodog veteran, Nick Thompson against Fabricio Monteiro and Pancrase standout Ryo Kawamura against Brazillian Antonio Braga Neto.
