I’ve never met or talked to Dan Miller. I’m simply a fan of his and how he fights. He’s a guy who has never had an easy fight in the UFC, he’s stepped up on short notice, he’s fought in his opponents hometown, he’s fought under brutal circumstances, but he’s always come to fight.

You hear football experts compliment guys by saying, “that guy is just a football player.” While I hope that anyone who plays football is a football player, I feel like that kind of description fits a guy like Miller. He’s just a fighter. That’s what he knows how to do and that’s what he’s going to do, even after he hangs up his gloves.

Miller gives everything he has inside the cage and once again has to give everything he has outside the cage in order to save his son.

Dan Miller Jr. needs a kidney transplant due to a genetic kidney disorder known as polycystic kidney disease.

You may remember the story about Miller fighting Michael Bisping at UFC 114 despite the fact that his son was admitted to pediatric intensive care because of this same kidney disease. Even though he lost the fight, just stepping into the cage that night showed what kind of character Miller has. He probably shouldn’t have taken the fight, but he needed to step up and make money for his family and he needed to step up and help out the company, which recently lost the scheduled co-main event between Forrest Griffin and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

I’ve always joked that Miller is probably the #1 fighter on Joe Silva’s speed dial because he knows that Dan will step up to fight and the only questions he’ll ask is, “who and when?”

Honestly, because of everything Miller has done for the UFC, It’d be nice if Dana White, Lorenzo Fertitta, Joe Silva, and the rest of the organization paid for Dan Junior’s kidney transplant. To be fair, maybe they have chipped in some money, but the cost of the transplant is $100,000, you’d think with how much money the UFC makes, they could spare $100,000 to help the son of one of their fighters who has done everything ever asked of him. For goodness sake, they just gave Cung Le $350,000 for his first UFC bout, so you know they’re not hurting for money.

If you’d like to donate to help Miller Jr. so to the Daniel James Miller Foundation‘s website You can not only donate but read more about the disease, Danny Jr., and get the details on this weekends AMA Fundraiser Seminar.

Also, the fine folks at our Link Club brethren CagePotato.com have set up a fundraiser as well where you can purchase a T-Shirt as a way of donating. You can find the details on that by clicking here.

I’m not a parent and I’m not going to pretend to know what Dan and his family are going through. But as a fan of Miller and the sport, I feel that it’s important that we all be made aware of what’s going on and we all chip in, even if it’s just a couple of dollars.

In closing, I’d like to wish Miller, his wife, his son, and the rest of his family nothing but the best through these tough times. I pray things work out and that Danny Jr. can grow up and watch his father compete knowing that he’s already battled the toughest opponent he’ll ever face.

Born with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), a life-threatening disease causing cysts to develop on the afflicted individual’s kidneys, Miller Jr. was hospitalized only a few months into his life after suffering kidney failure and now undergoes daily dialysis treatments and physical therapy.

“He’s gone through way more than all of us combined, and he’s a trooper,” said Miller of his son in an interview with the UFC’s website. “He’s really strong, and way tougher than I am.”

“Jim and I have both said it in the past that he’s easily the toughest Miller,” continued the 30-year old while referencing younger brother (and UFC lightweight) Jim Miller.

Miller Jr. will undergo a kidney transplant in January which, if successful, should allow him to live a relatively normal life. However, the donor’s surgery has been deemed as “elective” leaving the family looking for financial assistance to help deal with the cost of the procedure as well as required medication. As a result, Miller recently set up the Daniel James Miller Foundation with an eventual goal of helping raise money for other families affected by PKD.

In addition to donations, Miller’s gym in New Jersey (AMA Fight Club) will also be holding a fundraiser on December 3. Interested parties learn more about the gathering, as well as how to help, by checking out the foundation’s Facebook page.

It is perhaps for that reason Miller is counting on the bout being one of the biggest challengers of his career, though anyone familiar with the 30-year old’s background knows he is no stranger to adversity.

“I expect a very tough three-round battle. I will be looking for the submission but am certainly not afraid to stand and use my hands,” Miller explained through an official press release. “Either way, I always enjoy testing myself against top opponents in the Octagon.”

Miller took the match-up with only about a month to prepare – the latest in his history of stepping up to the plate when needed including doing on a week’s notice before taking on Nate Marquardt at UFC 128 where he fought to a decision loss – but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t already found a an aspect of the Brazilian’s game he hopes to exploit at the event.

“I am focused on capitalizing on a mistake that my opponent makes,” Miller continued though didn’t elaborate on the specific nature of Palhares’ flawed approach.

After the fight, the next place fans see Miller may not necessarily be in a ring but on the pages of MMA-centric comic book “Joe Palooka”. The 13-5 middleweight is one of a handful of fighters representing the Team Palooka brand who is slated for a guest appearance in the series focusing on the “Legion of Combat” where teams from the around the world compete towards championship glory.

“It sounds like a very exciting and unique opportunity. It is something that not everyone can be a part of, so I will proudly fly the Palooka colors.”

Viewers can tune into Miller’s next adventure tonight on Spike TV starting at 8:00 PM EST. While he may be showered with boos based on his nationality and the show’s location, it’s clear to see Miller is anything but a villain.

Stepping in to replace him is Dan Miller, who was originally scheduled to fight Nick Catone in a preliminary fight on the card.

UFC President Dana White made the announcement late Friday night. White ensured fans that Akiyama was safe but it is unknown when he will return to action.

Marquardt will try to rebound after losing a middleweight #1 contender’s fight to Yushin Okami last November while Miller is looking to make it three wins in a row against the highly touted Marquardt. UFC announced that Carmella DeCesare will replace Miller against Catone and that fight would take place at a catch-weight of 195 pounds.

UFC 128 is scheduled for March 19, 2011 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The event is headlined by a UFC Light Heavyweight Title fight between champion Mauricio Rua and challenger Jon Jones. The co-main event features Urijah Faber, making his UFC bantamweight debut, against former WEC Bantamweight Champion Eddie Wineland.

The earthquake is the most powerful to have ever hit Japan in recorded history. No figure has been released in terms of damage estimates but given the extensive destruction it will clearly be an exceptionally high figure. Interested parties can help donate to the relief effort via the Red Cross.

Both fighters have been approached about the possibility of the bout, and at least one has verbally agreed to the potential match-up according to a recent report on MMAJunkie.com.

While no date or venue for the bout has been announced at this time, the two are expected to meet at UFC 109, which is tentatively expected for February 6 in Las Vegas.

Maia was recently handed his first loss as a professional courtesy of Nate Marquardt knockout at UFC 102 after putting together an unblemished record of 11-0, with five consecutive submission victories with the UFC over the likes of Jason MacDonald, Nate Quarry and Chael Sonnen.

Miller is in a similar situation, having suffered his first UFC defeat recently to Chael Sonnen during UFC 98 after stringing together three consecutive wins in the Octagon over Rob Kimmons, Matt Horwich and Jake Rosholt.

After middleweight contender Yushin Okami was forced to withdraw from his upcoming match-up with Dan Miller earlier today due to a torn ligament, many reports were circulating that Ed Herman had agreed to fill Okami’s shoes, but now it appears as yet another opponent has been tabbed to face Miller.

Chael Sonnen has recently agreed to the match-up with Miller that will take place at UFC 98 according to multiple reports.

UFC 98 is scheduled for May 23 and will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Sonnen is an NCAA All-American and a two time National Champion wrestler and a veteran of the Pancrase, Bodog Fight, WEC and UFC organizations. He was recently submitted in the first round by Demian Maiain his return to the UFC in February. Sonnen was previously espected to face off with Wilson Gouveia at UFC 102 but opted to forfeit that bout in favor of the UFC 98 match-up with Miller.

Miller’s first and only professional loss came to Mike Massenzio in the form of a split decision over three years ago. He has established himself as a legitimate threat in the UFC’s middleweight division with impressive victories over the likes of Rob Kimmons, Matt Horwich and most recently Jake Rosholt in February. He is the brother of UFC lightweight challenger Jim Miller.

UFC 98 is set to be headlined by a light heavyweight championship match-up between Rashad Evans and Lyoto Machida and will be co-featured by a welterweight grudge match between Matt Hughes and Matt Serra.

A full list of the bouts expected for UFC 98 are listed below:

Rashad Evans vs. Lyoto Machida

Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra

Dan Miller vs. Chael Sonnen

Sean Sherk vs. Frankie Edgar

Phillipe Nover vs. Kyle Bradley

Chris Wilson vs. Brock Larson

Patrick Barry vs. Tim Hague

Houston Alexander vs. Andre Gusmao

Drew McFedries vs. Xavier Foupa-Pokam

Yoshiyuki Yoshida vs. Brandon Wolff

David Kaplan vs. George Roop

UFC officials announced Tuesday that a middleweight matchup between Yushin Okami and Dan Miller has been officially added to the main televised portion of the promotion’s upcoming UFC 98 event slated for May 23.

In addition to Okami vs. Miller, the company also made official previously reported bouts between Matt Serra vs. Matt Hughes and Sean Sherk vs. Frankie Edgar. Both are also slated to make the pay-per-view portion of the event.

Non-televised matchups now confirmed include James Irvin vs. Drew McFedries, Patrick Barry vs. Tim Hague, Houston Alexander vs. Andre Gusmao, Phillipe Nover vs. Kyle Bradley, Dave Kaplan vs. George Roop, and Yoshiyuki Yoshida vs. Brandon Wolff.

UFC 98 will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will be headlined by a title unification match between UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and interim UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir.

For Okami, his UFC 98 matchup vs. Miller is crucial. Slated to face Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight title this past October at UFC 90, the Japan native was forced to pull off the card due to injury and was replaced by Patrick Cote. He then returned at UFC 92 where he defeated Dean Lister via a unanimous decision. Following the win, it appeared that UFC President Dana White had guaranteed the 23-4 fighter another title shot.

Despite an impressive 7-1 record while competing in the Octagon, it’s clear that Okami will instead have to win at least one more fight to get a shot at the 185 pound crown. Standing in his way is the former IFL middleweight champion, Miller.

Considered one of the brightest prospects to come out of the Northeast, Miller is 11-1 overall and is a perfect 3-0 since debuting in the UFC. His first UFC win came at UFC Fight Night 15 this past September, where he submitted Rob Kimmons with a rear naked choke at 1:27 of round 1.

He then return just five weeks later and recorded a unanimous decision victory over Matt Horwich at UFC 90. Miller’s most recent victory occurred during last month’s UFC Fight Night 17, where he handed former NCAA champion Jake Rosholt his first career MMA loss following a guillotine choke submission at 1:03 of round 1.

Former International Fight League middleweight champion Dan Miller is in and Alessio Sakara is out.

The website MMA Weekly first reported Wednesday night that Miller has been tapped to replace Sakara as the opponent for former NCAA champion Jake Rosholt during the former’s UFC debut on Feb. 7 at UFC Fight Night 17. FiveOuncesOfPain.com has since confirmed the news with sources close to the bout.

Miller is the brother of UFC lightweight Jim Miller and trains out of the AMA Fight Club in New Jersey. A veteran of 11 professional fights, he is 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the UFC. After winning his Octagon debut against Rob Kimmons at UFC Fight Night 15 this past September, Miller returned to fight a little over a month alter at UFC 90, where he won a unanimous decision over Matt Horwich.

The fight will serve as Rosholt’s first in the UFC in light of sibling promotion World Extreme Cagefighting disbanding its middleweight and light heavyweight divisions following its WEC 37 event on December 3.

Rosholt, 5-0, graduated from Oklahoma State University, where he won the 184-pound NCAA title in 2003 and the 197-pound title in 2005 and 2006. Additionally, he was a four-time All-American and a Big 12 conference champion in 2004 while attending OSU.

After making his pro MMA debut in 2007, Rosholt quickly amassed a 4-0 record before signing a multi-fight agreement with the WEC. Making his debut at WEC 36 on Nov. 5, Rosholt improved to 5-0 with a second round TKO over the previously undefeated Nissen Osterneck.

Sakara, a former professional boxer in Italy who currently trains MMA with Florida’s American Top Team, was forced to pull out of the previously agreed to bout due to an undisclosed injury.

UFN 17 will emanate from the University of South Florida’s Sun Dome in Tampa with the current card reported to be the following:

Joe Lauzon vs. Hermes Franca

Mac Danzig vs. Josh Neer

Amir Sadollah vs. Nick Catone

Cain Velasquez vs. Denis Stojnic

Anthony Johnson vs. Luigi Fioravanti

Jake Rosholt vs. Dan Miller

Rich Clementi vs. Gleison Tibau

Kurt Pellegrino vs. Rob Emerson

Matt Riddle vs. Steve Bruno

Matt Grice vs. George Sotiropoulos

The news was first reported by MMA Weekly.

Miller last competed at UFC Fight Night 15, submitting Rob Kimmons via rear naked choke in the first round. He was also the last IFL middleweight champion before the promotion closed its doors. Coincidentally, Horwich was also the IFL middleweight champion at one point so this fight pits former IFL 185 lbs. champions against one another.

Horwich, who trains out of Team Quest, will be making his UFC debut. Horwich posted a 7-4 record in the IFL competing at both light heavyweight and middleweight and last competed at an IFL show in May of this year defeating Joey Guel via unanimous decision.

UFC 90 is set to feature a middleweight title matchup between Anderson Silva and Patrick Cote as well as a welterweight matchup between Diego Sanchez and Thiago Alves.

According to a report on MMAjunkie.com, brothers Jim Miller and Dan Miller have both signed exclusive four-fight contracts with the UFC.

Both Millers had valid contracts with the IFL, with Dan Miller holding the promotion’s middleweight title. This site reported last week that the UFC was in the process of acquiring the IFL, but an acquisition had yet to be finalized.

To date, no official statement about a possible acquisition has been made by the UFC or the IFL so it’s uncertain how the UFC could reach a contract agreement if at least limited assets had not been acquired.

Junkie’s report, which quotes AMA Fight Club’s Mike Constantino, both the manager and a trainer for the Millers, indicates that a debut date has yet to be set for either fighter.

MMA Mania has learned the recipients of the UFC Fight Night 14 bonuses for Fight of the Night, Submission of the Night, and Knockout of the Night. They are as follows:

Frankie Edgar and Hermes Franca added an extra $25,000 to their payday for the Fight of the Night. Franca and Edgar fought a three round war that had Edgar controlling the fight but Franca not going away quietly and dropping bombs on Edgar throughout.

C.B. Dollaway earned a $25,000 bonus for Submission of the Night. Dollaway’s Peruvian Necktie submission on Jesse Taylor was a thing of beauty.

Rory Markham padded his wallet with an extra $25,000 bonus for Knockout of the Night. Markham’s head kick to end the fight against Brodie Farber is right up there with some of the best knockouts all year.

The UFC handed the bonuses out to the correct people. Dollaway’s submission was one of the best of the year, Franca vs. Edgar was the clear cut best fight of the night, and Markham’s knockout of Farber was one of those moments where you hit rewind six or seven times and each time it gets worse. Anderson Silva’s knockout of James Irvin was devastating but it didn’t deserve the knockout bonus.

There has been plenty of talk since Frankie Edgar’s loss to Gray Maynard at UFC Fight Night 13 that Edgar may be too small for 155 lbs. When we interviewed Edgar after that bout he said that he intended on staying at 155 and was looking to actually put on some weight to make him a little bit stronger and give him more size. Edgar has been blogging for USA Today leading up to his fight against Hermes Franca at UFC 87 on August 9 and he’s sticking to that plan according to his latest entry:

When I say I’ve been maintaining my weight, I’ve been heavier than I’ve ever been. I’ve been able to stay around 165 pounds during this whole training camp, and I haven’t dipped into 150s, which has been good for me, because I’ve been able to keep my size and strength up.

Cutting weight can be detrimental, so I’m on the fence about it. That’s why I’m trying to chip away and get a little bit bigger, a little bit more size and keep some strength as I go on. Hopefully after this fight, I can gain a little more size and by the time all is said and done, I’ll be a perfect 155.

But Edgar is in no way ruling out a move to 145 lbs. if need be:

Right now, I’m not thinking about fighting in a lower weight division. I’ve been fighting at 155 my whole career so I’m pretty comfortable there. But you never know what the future holds — I can make the weight at 145 pounds. When I wrestled in college, I usually weighed about 155 and cut to 141.

It was pretty clear in the fight with Maynard that one of the main reasons that Edgar lost was due to his lack of size and strength against the much larger Maynard. Maynard eventually was able to push the pace and throw Edgar around like a rag doll for much of the last two rounds. In my heart of hearts I truly believe that the best place for Edgar is at 145 lbs. but who am I to talk?

Edgar is 8-1 at the 155 lbs. weight class with wins over the likes of Tyson Griffin, Jim Miller, and Spencer Fisher. If he can keep some size and strength and still compete with the big boys at 155 then more power to him. That makes his victories that much more impressive.

The report indicates that there are plans to possibly match Franca up with Frankie Edgar. FiveOuncesOfPain.com has learned that the match is not yet signed, but all indications are that it will likely be finalized soon.

Franca was released by the UFC several months back, per his request, but he stated soon after that it was his desire to rejoin the promotion once he was eligible to fight again. He is suspended through July 5 by the California State Athletic Commission after testing positive for the steroid drostanolone following his decision loss to Sean Sherk at UFC 73 last July.

Edgar last fought in April at UFC Fight Night 13, where he suffered the first loss of his pro career following a unanimous decision loss to Gray Maynard.

UFC 87 is scheduled to be headlined by a match featuring UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre defending his title against Jon Fitch. Bouts between Brock Lesnar and Heath Herring and Kenny Florian vs. Roger Huerta are on tap as well.

Frankie Edgar and Chris Liguori will begin training with Renzo Gracie black belt and UFC middleweight Ricardo Almeida to improve their jiu jitsu game, according to MMA Weekly. Here’s what Almeida had to say about the two young fighters:

“Frankie and Chris are great athletes, but even better people,” said Almeida about his new teammates. “They have been able to get very far in MMA already, so I can’t wait to see what will happen when they are able to add solid jiu-jitsu skills to their arsenals. I’m stoked to have them join our team.”

This can only be beneficial to both fighters, especially Edgar. He has been trying to improve his BJJ skills and training with a jiu jitsu player the caliber of Almeida, who has had success in MMA as well, is a great thing for Edgar and his overall game.

Adam Morgan: Are you back in the gym already after that last fight or are you taking some time off?

Frankie Edgar: You know, I’ve worked out a couple times already. I try to get back to it pretty fast. I’m getting married here on Saturday so I have been taking a little time off.

Adam Morgan: Oh, you’re getting married on Saturday?

Frankie Edgar: Yeah, I’m getting married tomorrow so things have been kind of hectic.

Adam Morgan: Well, congratulations, sir.

Frankie Edgar: Thanks, man.

Adam Morgan: Getting into the fight itself, it seemed like a lot of guys at UFN 13 were visibly gassed during their fights. I asked you last time if you felt that the altitude would have any effect on the bout, you said no. Now having fought a hard fight, a full three rounds in that climate, would you say it had any effect on the fight at all?

Frankie Edgar: No, I really can’t say that it did. I went out there and I worked out before. I got a bunch of rounds in and felt fine. I felt fine going into the fight, so I don’t know. It just kind of happened real fast. I can’t say if I was completely gassed or not.

Adam Morgan: In the post fight interview, Maynard suggested that he won the fight because he was “just bigger.” Would you say that’s true, that his size presented the biggest problem of all?

Frankie Edgar: No, I just don’t think I fought my best fight, you know? He had a great gameplan and I’m sure his size, you know, he was bigger, that was obvious but I don’t know if that was the whole reason. I’m sure it had something to do with him being able to maybe get some takedowns and stuff like that. But I still don’t think I fought my best fight.

Adam Morgan: Was there anything about Gray Maynard or his game that surprised you at all?

Frankie Edgar: His game was a lot more cleaned up than I expected. Both of his fights he would come out fast paced and he kind of took his time so that surprised me a little bit. Otherwise I was ready for what he was gonna do.

Adam Morgan: Yeah, it looked like his boxing was cleaned up quite a bit and that his hands were improved. Did that surprise you at all?

Frankie Edgar: Yeah, I knew he was always willing to throw his hands but like I said, this time it was much more cleaner, straighter punches, things like that.

Adam Morgan: What do you feel was the biggest thing you took from that fight so far?

Frankie Edgar: I just didn’t focus I think. I lost focus somewhere during this fight and I really wasn’t listening to my corner as much as I should have. I just gotta make sure I stay focused throughout the whole fight, that’s the biggest thing. And some technical stuff that I think I could improve on as well.

Adam Morgan: What was your corner telling you to do?

Frankie Edgar: I really wasn’t throwing punches. When I was getting some combos off I kind of would back up when maybe I should have been throwing a little more. Should have been moving a little more on my feet instead of giving him such a good target for takedowns.

Adam Morgan: It seemed like after the first two rounds it was a very close fight and could have gone either way at that point. Did you feel a sense of urgency going into the third round knowing that the fight was on the line in that round?

Frankie Edgar: Yeah, I definitely did. He got a couple of takedowns and it was pretty frustrating. I had a hard time getting up on him. It was there for me, he just executed his gameplan well and fought a good fight.

Adam Morgan: Would you like a rematch against Maynard?

Frankie Edgar: Absolutely man. I don’t wanna be cheesy and say I want it right away. I’ll go and get some fights in but you always wane beat the guy that beat you up. I think that’s something I would definitely like to do in the future.

Adam Morgan: There have been some people talking about 145 lbs. being a more natural weight for you after this fight and feel that you might be better off served in the featherweight division in Zuffa’s other company, World Extreme Cagefighting. Do you have anything to say in response?

Frankie Edgar: I ain’t going anywhere, I guess that’s my response. I’m staying at 155 lbs.

Adam Morgan: Okay, so it’s still your plan to remain at lightweight and still try to contend for a title there?

Frankie Edgar: Absolutely, absolutely.

Adam Morgan: Would you be open to dropping to 145 lbs. if Zuffa asked you to?

Frankie Edgar: I don’t know, it’s something I’d have to really think about. It’s an option, I definitely can make the weight, but I’d rather try to put some weight on and stay where I’m at. I like fighting in the UFC, you know?

Adam Morgan: So you are going to try to put some weight on?

Frankie Edgar: Yeah, I think that’s something I can improve on. You always try to improve on everything whether it be your boxing, your wrestling, jiu jitsu. I just think another aspect would be strength and size so that’s something I’m gonna improve on just like I want to improve on everything else.

Adam Morgan: Has the UFC approached you about what’s next?

Frankie Edgar: No. I don’t know, I’m just gonna try to shoot for something like summertime I’d like to fight again so we’ll see.

Adam Morgan: Any possible opponents on the table at this point?

Frankie Edgar: Nah, nothing at all that I know of.

Adam Morgan: Well, that’s all I’ve got for you, man. Thanks for doing the interview with us.

Frankie Edgar: No problem, man. Thanks a lot.
