Arguably the most dangerous submission artist competing in the sport today, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza is still reeling from his middleweight championship bout with Jason “Mayhem” Miller at DREAM 9 on May 26.

The bout was ruled a no-contest after Miller opened a nasty cut on the head of Souza with an inadvertent kick to the head of the downed Jacare.

Jacare made his feelings on Mayhem following the bout quite clear in a recent interview with the Brazilian website Tatame.com.

“At the time of the fight he cried, apologized to his coach, then came toward my corner saying I was an idiot, and also apologized,” explained Souza. “He is proving that he isn’t a person of only one face, he is a two-faced. After the fight gave ‘No Contest’ he cried, apologized to the coaches, and that everyone saw, but I don’t know if everyone saw him getting in my corner calling me an idiot and apologizing too.”

While the bad blood on Jacare’s end will unlikely settle before he has his chance to get Miller in the ring one more time, the Jiu-Jitsu specialist will now be forced on the sidelines while the abrasion on his head is given proper time to heal.

“I trained three months to this clown come and do what he did, now I won’t fight in July, not for a while,” said Jacare. “I’ll take a rest and wait.”

Former World Series Champion Jose Canseco came up short in his first bid at mixed martial arts when he was TKO’d in the first round when he faced off with Korean giant Hong Man Choi at Dream 9.

While ending up on the losing side of things in Yokohama, the former professional baseball player surprised many when he started things off by connecting with a solid right hand to the chin of Choi. After a couple of meager kicks from Canseco he ended up on the ground while Choi rained down punches forcing the first round TKO stoppage.

Also featured in the “Super Hulk Tournament” was a match-up between Gegard Mousasi and Mark Hunt. Mousasi utilized his superior submission game as he took side control and locked in the fight ending armlock that forced the tap in the fist round.

Ikuhisa “Minowaman” Minowa landed an overhand right to the chin of Bob Sapp to get things started in their Super Hulk match-up. After going for a takedown on the giant, Minowa found himself on the bottom position where he gave Sapp his back. “The Beast” is reversed when trying for a rear-naked choke. While in the top position “The Punk” transitioned to an achilles lock to bring the end of the bout in the first round.

Rounding out the tournament was a bout between Jan “The Giant” Nortje and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou. Sokoudjou executed a nice judo throw to wind up on top of the much larger Nortje. From there “The African Assassin” brought the pain, finishing the bout with punches and hammerfists. Controversy ensued as Sokoudjou failed to listen to the referees instructions to stop and threw three more punches to the face of his downed opponent as the referee covered him like a blanket.

Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante had Tatsuya Kawajiri in a couple of very compromising positions in the early moments of the first round as he nearly finished off his opponent with a guillotine choke on two separate occasions. Kawajiri survived the early scare to take control of the bout with superior wrestling and ground and pound on his way to a unanimous decision.

Hideo Tokoro and Abel Cullum undoubtedly put on the fight of the night as both men traded positions, submission attempts and punches in a wild affair before Tokoro was ultimately able to bring an end to things with a rear-naked choke in the second.

Joe Warren managed to survive a couple of explosive punches from Kid Yamamoto to grind out the hard fought decision victory. Warren utilized his superior takedowns and wrestling ability to earn himself the split decision in what is considered to be an enormous upset.

The main event of the evening ended in controversy. After a back and forth battle in which both men had their bright spots, Jason “Mayhem” Miller landed an illegal kick to the head of a downed Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza that caused a nasty gash on the submission wizard’s head. After a couple of breaks for the doctor to check the cut it was ruled that Jacare was unable to continue. The bout was ruled a no contest.

A full list of the results from the card are listed below:

Jason “Mayhem” Miller vs. Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza declared a no contest

Joe Warren def. Norifumi “Kid Yamamoto via split decision

Bibiano Fernandes def. Masakazu Iminari via unanimous decision

Hiroyuki Takaya def. Yoshiro Maeda via TKO (strikes) – Round 1, 9:40

Hideo Tokoro def. Abel Cullum via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 2, 1:37

Freak shows. Any fan of the sport that was around to witness Gerard Gordeau send Teila Tuli’s tooth rocketing out of his head at the very first UFC, or Keith Hackney trying to take Emmanuel Yarborough‘s life at UFC 3 knows exactly what I’m talking about. Hate them or love them, I just happen to love them. Call me a sadist, call me old school, I’m a big fan of the freak fights from way back.

Speaking of freak show’s, the DREAM promotion has a whole bunch of good ones going down early tomorrow morning United States time at their ninth event set to take place at the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan.

Jose Canseco is scheduled to face off with Hong Man Choi at the event……. nuff said. Let’s dive right into what should be an extremely intersting and eventful night of unlikely match-ups in the land of the rising sun.

Jose Canseco vs. Hong Man Choi

Lets take a look at some of Canseco’s numbers going into this “fight” with Hong Man. The “Bash Brother” put together a whopping 462 homeruns and maintained a respectable batting average of .266 during his professional career. Let’s keep it real folks, I’m really not so sure how good of a chance Jose would have against the Korean giant in a “for real” fight if the former major league slugger was permitted to keep his trusty Louisville Slugger with him in a special rules match. Considering the ridiculousness of this match-up, a special rules match of that sort taking place in Japan may not be that far down the horizon. Bottom line, the enormous K-1 giant is a far cry from Danny Bonaduce. You have to give the former World Series Champion credit though, most never expected for him to show up in Japan.

I’m going to use a little real estate here to plead with Hong Man and the matchmakers at K-1 to please stop allowing the 7-2″, 330 pound Choi to beat the crap out of poor Akebono. After knocking the Sumo legend senseless in the first round under the K-1 banner not once but twice in 2005, the promotion saw it fit that he lay some physical punishment on Akebono with the same result one more time in 2006. Stop the insanity!

Sure, Choi is 1-2 in his MMA career , but his two losses were to Fedor Emelianenko and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic. I can respect that. This match-up with Canseco will be a breath of fresh air for Choi.

We shouldn’t forget that outside of his bully beatdowns of Akebono, Choi holds K-1 victories over the likes of Gary Goodridge, Mighty Mo, and Semmy Schilt. He’s going to tear Canseco’s head off of his neck and high kick it into the cheap seats at the Yokohama Arena.

Gegard Mousasi vs. Mark Hunt

At first glance there are going to be many that think that Hunt is going to have a decided weight advantage over Mousasi, which he will, I’m just not so sure how decisive that weight advantage will be and how much it’s going to matter against a mixed martial artist as talented and well rounded as Mousasi.

It’s a heavyweight fight and Mousasi will be coming in as a heavyweight, I can guarantee that. In his recent first round battering of the highly favored K-1 veteran Musashi in a kickboxing match that took place on New Years Eve of 2008, Mousasi weighed in at 216 pounds and he wore it well. Expect for him to weigh in around the 220-230 pound mark for this one.

Hunt has dropped his last four straight mixed martial arts bouts which could never be viewed as a good omen going into a fight. The scariest statistic is the fact that he has been submitted in three of those defeats, something Mousasi is plenty capable of pulling off. In Hunt’s most recent bout with Melvin Manhoef he was knocked flat by a series of punches in the opening moments of the bout, something that, while not the most likely scenario, Mousasi is also fully capable of pulling out of his hat of tricks.

Bottom line, Mousasi is ten times the mixed martial artist that Hunt is and it’s going to show early on in this fight. Mousasi takes this one, you can bet on it. He is by far one of the most highly skilled and little talked about fighters in the business but an arrival in the U.S. would turn that around in a hurry.

Bob Sapp vs. Ikuhisa Minowa

How do you even call a fight like this. Minowa will be giving away roughly 150 pounds to the gargantuan Sapp. Who’s the better all around fighter? Minowa without a doubt, but I’ll say it again, “The Punk” will be giving away about 150 pounds to Sapp.

One of two things are most likely to happen in this bout. Either Sapp runs across the ring in typical fashion and murderizes Minowa with a hard punch or two, or Minowa throws his body at one of the giant’s limbs and twists on it until “The Beast” cries out in pain.

I think the latter of the two scenarios is the most likely result but who really knows in a freak show like this one. My only concern is that Minowa doesn’t twist too hard as there are a whole bunch of people that are guiltily looking forward to Sapp’s upcoming clash with Bobby Lashley.

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Jan Nortje

Nortje’s professional record of 2-5 is anything but impressive, but 100 or more pounds is one heck of a size differential to overcome no matter who you are.

If these two guys were near the same size the edge would have to go to Sokoudjou, who is the more technical striker with the better ground game. They’re not the same size though, not by any means.

Nortje, being a kickboxer, will most likely try to utilize his reach and size advantage on the feet while gunning for the knockout while Sokoudjou, well, I don’t know what his game plan is going to be coming into this one. What would you do if you were facing someone more that 100 pounds larger than you? I’d swing for the fences and hope for the best, we’ll see what the “African Assassin” has up his sleeve early tomorrow morning.

Also scheduled for the card is a rematch between Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Jason “Mayhem” Miller for the DREAM middleweight strap, Kid Yamamoto returns to action in the featherweight grand prix and top lightweights Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante and Tatsuya Kawajiri duke it out to determine who the 155 pound alpha-male truly is.

For any of you crazy diehards such as myself, be sure to set your alarm clocks for 5 am ET this morning as HDNet will be broadcasting the event live from Japan.

A full list of the bouts scheduled for Dream 9 are listed below:

Dream Featherweight Grand Prix

Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto vs. Joe Warren

Jason “Mayhem” Miller is the host of MTV’s Bully Beatdown, where he goads real-life bullies into accepting $10,000 prize fights against professional fighters. He has a recurring guest role most Mondays on The Jason Ellis Radio Show on Sirius XM Radio, he writes a popular monthly humour column for FIGHT! Magazine and has a large and growing fan club whose members call themselves Mayhem Monkeys.

He is also a BJJ and Muay Thai stylist with a professional MMA record of 22-6-0. He will be facing the 2004 and 2005 open weight BJJ world champion Ronaldo “Jacaré” de Souza for the middleweight title at DREAM 9.

Miller has already competed twice for DREAM, knocking out pro wrestling tough guy Katsuyori Shibata at DREAM 3 and losing an exciting match to “Jacare” by decision in the second round of the middleweight tournament at DREAM 4 in June 2008. His most recent fight was in Honolulu, at the debut event for Kingdom MMA, where he choked out local hero Kala “Kolohe” Hose in the first round.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com had the chance to catch up with Miller just before his big rematch with the submission wizard in Japan and he reassured us that this time around his gameplan would be “STRIKINGLY different”.

Gordi Whitelaw for FiveOuncesOfPain.com: What led you to compete in MMA?

Jason “Mayhem” Miller: An innate genetic desire to damage my fellow human beings, coupled with the realization that you can only do this if you join the Army or be a professional fighter.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: Who are some of the people who’ve helped you along the way?

Jason “Mayhem” Miller: Rampage Jackson, Dan Henderson, Ryan Parsons. Jesus-not the one you are thinking, the guy who used to mow the lawn at my high school.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: What are your greatest strengths as a fighter?

Jason “Mayhem” Miller: My unwillingness to quit and my psychotic inhuman rage.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: What weaknesses, if any, do you perceive yourself as having in the ring?

Jason “Mayhem” Miller: My sensitivity to my opponents family.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: How does your family feel about what you’ve chosen to do with your life?

Jason “Mayhem” Miller: They would beat your ass for asking that question.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: In training, do you focus more energy on trying to fine tune the strong points of your game, or on trying to bring up whatever areas might need improving?

Jason “Mayhem” Miller: Improvement. Why would I beat a dead horse with something I already do well? It’s not 1992 and I’m not wearing a gi.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: Do your training change as fight day approaches, how so, and how far out from a fight do these changes take effect?

Jason “Mayhem” Miller: A week out training is much lighter, gives the body time to recover and get strong for the fight.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: What is your diet like? Do you use supplements?

Jason “Mayhem” Miller: During training camp a lot of vegetables, brown rice and lean protiens. I use whey protien, flax seeds, multivitamins, glucosamine and fiber.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: What part(s) of your physical training regimen do you feel have the biggest impact on what happens in the ring?

Jason “Mayhem” Miller: I do different drills for different fights. This fight has been all about footwork and conditioning, the last fight was more about strength.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: How will your strategy be different for the rematch? What did you learn in the first fight that might help you this time around?

Jason “Mayhem” Miller: I plan on making him fight to my strengths. Last time we fought on his terms and I didn’t win. This time will be STRIKINGLY different.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: What changes have you made to your training in preparation for this fight?

Jason “Mayhem” Miller: More wrestling, more boxing, better ju jitsu. it’s not going down the same way this time.

Dream 9, which is scheduled for May 26, may be the best card the young organization has put on yet. With second round featherweight grand prix bouts coupled along with the debut of the open-weight “Super Hulk” tournament Dream is packing a serious punch this time around.

Fans will see the debut of the ever popular featherweight Norifuni “Kid” Yamamoto as he was given a first round bye and will battle Joe Warren.

Many fans around the world have been clamoring for Yamamoto to join the ranks of the WEC where he could battle top featherweights Urijah Faber, WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown and Leonard Garcia just to name a few.

Warren is coming off a successful MMA debut at Dream 7 where he defeated WEC veteran Chase Beebe via first round TKO. Warren won the 2006 World Championships in Greco-Roman wrestling and was due to enter the 2007 tournament but had his dreams dashed when he was suspended for testing positive for marijuana for a second time.

Another exciting bout is the rematch between Jason Miller and Renaldo “Jacare” Souza which will be for the vacant Dream middleweight title. The two fought at Dream 4 in the middleweight grand prix quarterfinals. Miller became the only man to go the distance with Souza losing to the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt by unanimous decision. Miller went on to retire which didn’t last long and Souza went to the finals where he lost to Gegard Mousasi.

Mousassi has since vacated the title and will participate in the Super Hulk tournament facing off against Mark Hunt.

Also participating in the open weight tournament is disgraced former major league baseball player Jose Canseco as he faces off against Hong Man Choi who is famous for dancing down to the ring with girls by his side as well as losing to both Cro-Cop and Fedor Emelianenko.

Others participating in the tournament are Bob Sapp, Ikuhisa “Minowaman” Minowa, Jan Nortje and Rameau Thierry Sokodjou.

Below is a complete list of the bouts expected for the card.

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Jason “Mayhem” Miller (for vacant middleweight title)

Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto vs. Joe Warren- Second Round Featherweight Grand Prix

Bibiano Fernandes vs. Masakazu Imanari- Second Round Featherweight Grand Prix

Yoshiro Maeda vs. Hiroyuki Takaya- Second Round Featherweight Grand Prix

Abel Cullum vs. Hideo Tokoro- Second Round Featherweight Grand Prix

Gesias “JZ” Cavalvante vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri

Mark Hunt vs. Gegard Mousasi- First Round Super Hulk Tournament

Jan Nortje vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou- First Round Super Hulk Tournament

Jose Canseco vs. Hong Man Choi- First Round Super Hulk Tournament

Ikuhisa “Minowaman” Minowa vs. Bob Sapp- First Round Super Hulk Tournament

They say the Japanese loves to watch freak shows and Dream 9 will certainly be no different.

Dream announced that they will be holding an 8 man open weight tournament and that one of the contestants will be former MLB player and admitted steroid abuser Jose Canseco.

Other participants for the tournament that is scheduled to start at Dream 9 are Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, Bob Sapp, Jan Nortje, Hong Man Choi, Ikuhisa “Minowaman” Minowa, Gegard Mousassi, and Mark Hunt.

Also on the card will be a rematch between Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Ronald “Jacare” Souza for the vacated Dream Middleweight title. Souza defeated Miller by unanimous decision during the Dream middleweight grand prix. Miller to this day is the only fighter who Souza has defeated to take the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt to the judge’s scorecards.

The tournament will be called the “World Superman Championship” and will feature the following first round bouts. Choi vs. Canseco, Mousassi vs. Hunt, Sapp vs Minowa and Sokoudjou vs. Nortje.

Canseco claims to be an accomplished mixed martial artist and is coming off two celebrity boxing matches. He lost via knockout to former NFL running back Vai Sikahema and he also battled former Partridge family member Danny Bonaduce to a majority draw.

Choi is best known for being submitted by Fedor Emilianenko on new year’s eve in 2007 and he also lost to Mirko “Cro-Cop” Filipovic this past new year’s eve.

Mousassi was the winner of the Dream middleweight grand prix but has decided to vacate the title and compete as a light heavyweight.

Sapp has been a huge draw in Japan for years whether he was fighting for Pride or for K-1.

Hunt also made his name fighting for K-1 and recently lost to Melvin Manhoef.

Sokoudjou made a huge splash when he knocked out both Ricardo Arona and Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera in the first round of their bouts under the Pride banner. He was picked up by the UFC but went 1-2 and was released. He was last seen being choked out by Renato Sobral at an Affliction event in January.

Nortje is 2-5 in his MMA career with his biggest win coming over Sapp at a Strikeforce event in February of 2008.

Minowa has been around since 1996 and has 79 bouts in his MMA career.

Also on the card will be the second round of the organization’s featherweight grand prix featuring Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto taking on Joe Warren and in a lightweight tilt Gesias “JZ” Calvacante will battle Tatsuya Kawajiri.

Here is the full card for Dream 9:

Gesias “JZ” Cavalvante vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Jason “Mayhem” Miller (for vacant middleweight title)

Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto vs. Joe Warren - Featherweight Grand Prix

Bibiano Fernandes vs. Masakazu Imanari- Featherweight Grand Prix

Yoshiro Maeda vs. Hiroyuki Takaya – Featherweight Grand Prix

Abel Cullum vs. Hideo Tokoro – Featherweight Grand Prix

With current Dream middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi moving up to the light heavyweight division, Ronald “Jacare” Souza will get another crack at capturing the middleweight championship at Dream 9.

Tatame is reporting that the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stand-out will be fighting for the title on May 26th and his opponent may be someone he is very familiar with. Jason “Mayhem” Miller who Souza defeated via unanimous decision at Dream 4 in the middleweight grand prix finals is being rumored as his opponent. Miller became the first person to take Souza the distance as all of Jacare’s eight wins up to that point had come by first round submission.

Jacare’s coach Jousel Distak has gone on record confirming the May 26 date and that the title will be on the line but would only say that Miller is being considered and that they are waiting final confirmation from the organization’s officials. The two had a pretty exciting bout back in June of last year and Miller went on to announce his retirement shortly thereafter but has since announced a return to action. He is scheduled to face Kala Hose at Kingdom MMA’s first event on April 18th in Hawaii. Miller can be seen on Sunday night’s on MTV’s Bully Beatdown for the time being.

Souza went on to defeat Zelg Galesic in the grand prix’s semi-finals but lost to Mousasi via first round TKO after Mousasi landed a vicious up kick while Souza was in his guard. He has not fought since but has been helping Lyoto Machida prepare for his light heavyweight title match against Rashad Evans at UFC 98 in May.

Former WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho, who has had more than his share of ups and downs over the past eighteen months, will be making a return trip to Japan at Dream 9 May 26th.

Tatame.com is reporting that Filho will fight a yet to be named opponent in the light heavyweight division.

Fihlo made his name fighting for Pride FC where he 8-0 by defeating such stars as Kazuo Misaki, Ryo Chonan and Murilo “Ninja Rua. He came to the United States with a perfect 14-0 record and was ranked as the number two middleweight by many major publications.

He signed with Zuffa and was immediately given a shot at the WEC middleweight title where he defeated Joe Doerksen via first round TKO. He then went on to successfully defend his title against Chael Sonnen but not without controversy. He was being handled pretty easily by Sonnen but was able to secure an armbar while on his back late in the second round. Sonnen verbally said he didn’t want to tap but the referee feared that his arm would snap and halted the bout setting up a rematch.

The two were scheduled to fight March 26th 2008 at WEC 33 but Filho pulled out of the bout and went into rehab for an undisclosed problem. The fight was rescheduled for WEC 36 but Filho weighed in at an outrageous seven pounds over the 185 pound limit, and after given time to shed the weight only managed to drop three more pounds, thus changing the fight from five rounds to three. Sonnen went on to defeat Filho by unanimous decision but the attention was on Filho as he looked to be talking to someone while in the cage. Filho did give Sonnen the belt after the fight but the championship was still Filho’s.

Zuffa decided to release the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and he has been on the shelf until now. He did turn down a chance to participate in the Bellator Fighting Championship middleweight tournament but felt the contract was too restrictive. Now the Japanese fans will get to see if he is back to the fighter he was and maybe fighting as a light heavyweight will suit him better. The report stated that Filho has been training with Ronald “Jacare” Souza to help him prepare for his return.

FiveOuncesofPain.com originally reported the matchup as being finalized upon hearing the news Friday afternoon from Mousasi’s manager, Apy Echteld. However, additional sources within M-1 Global later informed the site that the Mousasi vs. Sokoudjou fight is still tentative.

Mousasi, 24-2-1, has not competed in an MMA bout since winning the DREAM middleweight Grand Prix after defeating Ronald “Jacare” Souza during the finals on Sept. 23, 2008.

Sokoudjou, 5-4, is currently on a two-fight losing streak that began at UFC 89 against Luiz Cane this past October following a second round TKO.
While an opponent has not been confirmed for Hansen, sources have also indicated that he is likely to face Kultar “Black Mamba” Gill.

DREAM.5 is scheduled to emanate from Osaka, Japan at Osakajo Hall and will feature the DREAM Lightweight Grand Prix Semifinals and Finals. Semifinal matchups between Shinya Aoki vs. Caol Uno and Eddie Alvarez vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri have been set, with the winners of each bout fighting each other the same night in the tournament final.

As the tournament’s reserve match, the winner of the expected Hansen vs. Gill matchup would likely move onto the final in the event that a semifinal winner was injured and unable to continue.

Hansen, 17-7-1, according to Sherdog’s fight finder, was eliminated from the tournament after dropping a unanimous decision to Alvarez during the Grand Prix’s second round at DREAM.3 on May 11, in what many critics consider to be a candidate for “Fight of the Year.” Hansen advanced past the first round at DREAM.1 this past March when he recorded a unanimous decision over Kotetsu Boku.

Gill is 9-7 according to Sherdog and was eliminated from the first round of the tournament after losing in a unanimous decision to current semifinalist Kawajiri. In addition to DREAM, Gill has also competed for K-1 HERO’s, BodogFIGHT, Shooto and TKO.

In addition to the completion of the Lightweight Grand Prix, a non-tournament match between Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto and Joe Benavidez is also planned for DREAM.5. Middleweights Yoshihiro Akiyama and Denis Kang are rumored for the card as well, in separate bouts.
