The proverbial adage “three strikes and you’re out” rang true this week for Dustin Hazelett, as it appears he has been released by the UFC after dropping a third consecutive fight in the Octagon. Hazelett was submitted by fellow BJJ blackbelt Mark Bocek a little less than two weeks ago at the promotion’s latest venture into Montreal.

News of the professional separation was reported by MMAWeekly.

The lanky lightweight won five of six bouts in the UFC after losing to Tony DeSouza in his organizational debut with the loss coming to highly-ranked welterweight Josh Koscheck. However, Hazelett fell in all three of his 2010 appearances, two by way of first-round finish, after returning from a year-long hiatus due to medical and personal reasons keeping him out of the ring in 2009.

Hazelett exits the UFC with a 12-7 overall record and nine submissions to his credit. He holds past wins over Josh Burkman and Jonathan Goulet.

However, according to his trainer, the next time “McLovin” steps into the ring he will be a completely different fighter – literally.

The Ohio-based Hazelett’s coach, fellow Mixed Martial Artist Jorge Gurgel, recently spoke about the move to Heavy, mentioning the UFC was having Hazelett back but that his next bout would be at 155-pounds.

“I figured he’d grow into a man’s body and that it would be extremely difficult for him to fight at 155, so he started fighting at 170lbs., but he walks around at 173lbs”, said Gurgel. “Now that we know that Dustin’s normal weight is 173 to 175lbs., we’re going to do everything we can to scientifically drop him off to 155lbs. so that he can maximize his performance at 155 and we’re going to go from there.”

The 24-year old was 5-4 as a welterweight in the UFC, including wins over Josh Burkman, Tamdan McCrory, and Jonathan Goulet. However, Hazelett had been TKO’d in three of his last five fights (most recently to Rick Story at UFC 117).

It now looks like the temporary wound left by Condit’s removal from the card has found it’s tourniquet in the form of the submission wizard known to many as “McLovin”, who has apparently agreed to the UFC 108 contest according to a recent report over at MMAWeekly.

The pair will face off in a classic “striker vs. grappler” match-up on January 2 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Daley will be returning to the Octagon the heels of his impressive UFC debut where the heavy handed Brit knocked Martin Kampmann senseless with a whirlwind of strikes in the first round during UFC 103, while Hazelett will making his first return to the cage since a November 2008 submission victory over Tamdan McCrory at UFC 91.

A full list of the bouts expected for UFC 108 are listed below:

Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva

Paul Daley vs. Dustin Hazelett

Joe Lauzon vs. Sam Stout

Tyson Griffin vs. Jim Miller

Sean Sherk vs. Rafaello Oliveira

Cole Miller vs. Dan Lauzon

Martin Kampmann vs. Rory Markham

Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Steve Cantwell

Mark Munoz vs. Ryan Jensen

Mike Pyle vs. Jake Ellenberger

White recently made the announcement that Hazelett will receive all of his show and win money regardless of Parisyan’s inability to fight as previously expected via his Twitter account, stating:

Dustin will be paid his full purse to show and win. Its not his fault.

Hopefully the UFC will manage to secure another fight for Hazelett at a UFC in the near future. As it currently stands, it has been four days past the one year anniversary of Dustin’s last trip to the Octagon, where he tapped out Tamdan McCrory with a nasty inverted armbar at their UFC 91 meeting.

Sources close to the bout have recently confirmed to MMAWeekly.com that both fighters have agreed to the match-up.

UFC 106 is set for November 21 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and will air live on pay-per-view. The card is expected to feature a heavyweight championship bout between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin as the headliner, with a light-heavyweight contest between Tito Ortiz and Mark Coleman as the co-headliner.

A Judo master crafted under the guidance of grappling legends Gokor Chivichyan and Gene Lebell, Parisyan has established himself as a constant force in the UFC’s welterweight division since his arrival in 2003, putting up an impressive record of 8-3-1 during his time spent in the Octagon. Parisyan’s most recent decision victory over Dong Hyun-Kim was overturned after it was revealed that Karo had tested positive for banned pain-killers following the bout.

Hazelett, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, has picked up the coveted “Submission of the Night” in both of his prior appearances in the Octagon. With a UFC record of 5-2, Hazelett has bested highly regarded fighters such as Josh Burkman and Tamdan McCrory in recent outings.

A matchup between up and coming welterweight prospects Dustin Hazelett and Ben Saunders is close to being finalized for UFC 96 on March 7.

The news comes courtesy of a report on MMAjunkie.com, which is reporting that bout agreements for the fight have yet to be signed.

Hazelett, 12-4, has been rising through the deep ranks of the UFC’s 170 pound division thanks to exciting performances in his last two fights that have earned him a total of $105,000 in the form of three “Fight Night” bonuses.

A member of Team Jorge Gurgel, Hazelett improved his lifetime UFC record to 5-2 with consecutive wins over Josh Burkman during the live finale for the seventh season of The Ultimate Fighter and Tamdan McCrory at UFC 91. Both victories earned Hazelett “Submission of the Night” honors.

Saunders is a veteran from the sixth season of The Ultimate Fighter and has yet to be beaten in nine professional fights. He improved his record to 7-0-2 during UFC’s “Fight for the Troops” event last month after recording a first round TKO over Brandon Wolff.

A member of American Top Team, Saunders put on what might have been his most impressive performance to date by catching Wolff in a Thai clinch and delivering repeated knees to his face and body that forced the referee to call a stop to the bout just one minute and 49 seconds into the contest. The win improved Saunders career record in the Octagon to 3-0.

UFC 96 will take place in Columbus, Ohio and emanate from the Nationwide Arena. Other bouts currently expected for the event include Jim Miller vs. Gray Maynard, Shane Carwin vs. Gabriel Gonzaga, and Kendall Grove vs. Jason Day.

Receiving the 65K bonuses last night on top of their originally scheduled pay were Dustin Hazelett, Jeremy Stephens, Jorge Gurgel, and Aaron Riley.

Hazelett was awarded the “Submission of the Night” bonus following a victory via armbar against fellow welterweight Tamdan McCrory at 3:59 of round 1. The award marked the second time in the 22-year old black belt’s career that he has earned such honors. After the fight, Hazelett informed UFC color commentary Joe Rogan that it is his goal to set the UFC-career record for “Submission of the Night” awards.

The “Knockout of the Night” award went to Jeremy Stephens after the native Iowan thwarted multiple submission attempts by Rafael dos Anjos en route to a third round TKO. In what was proclaimed by color commentator Rogan as one of the biggest uppercuts in UFC history, Stephens deemed his lackluster performance in the first two rounds as irrelevant after loading up and delivering.

Stephens began to swing while outside of dos Anjos’ range but continued to move forward as the punch slipped through dos Anjos’ guard and turned his head at a 90 degree angle. The momentum behind the punch forced a discharge of saliva from the mouth of dos Anjos and made his neck to move as if it was on a swivel.

Both Gurgel and Riley were the recipitients of the “Fight of the Night” bonus following their preliminary card fight that ended with Riley winning via unanimous decision. Despite having taken place as the fourth fight on the card, UFC officials still managed to squeeze the fight into last night’s PPV telecast by airing it immediately after the night’s main event of Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar had concluded.

Even though Gurgel holds a black belt in jiu-jitsu, he decided to engage in a standup battle with Riley, who was making his return to the Octagon after two prior tours of duty with the promotion. Gurgel’s decision not to take the fight to the floor cost him not only the battle but the war, but he’s now $60,000 richer to show for the effort.

The fighters are two of the UFC’s more highly regarded prospects at 170 lbs. and a win for either fighter will help them climb the ladder in the stacked welterweight division.

“He’s a good jiu-jitsu guy with a lot of experience,” McCrory said about the fight. “He’s been in the UFC a little longer than I have, but he’s just another tough opponent.”

McCrory’s last fight came against Luke Cummo at UFC 87 where he recorded a unanimous decision victory for the first time in his career. Cummo was game but was outmuscled and outsized by the lanky McCrory throughout the fight.

Hazelett is coming off a possible Submission of the Year candidate fight in which he submitted Josh Burkman via armbar at the TUF 7 Finale back in June. He is now 4-2 in the UFC with his only losses coming against Josh Koscheck at UFC 82 and Tony DeSouza in his first fight in the UFC.

UFC 91 also features a lightweight clash between Joe Stevenson and Kenny Florian, a heavyweight fight between Gabriel Gonzaga and Josh Hendricks, and a lightweight bout between Jeremy Stephens and Rafael dos Anjos. Also rumored for the card is a possible light heavyweight matchup featuring Quinton “Rampage” Jackson taking on Wanderlei Silva for the third time in their careers.

5 Oz. is also pleased to announce that it has renewed its sponsorship of Maynard.

Maynard, who was 8-1 as an amateur, improved his pro record to 2-0 this past February when he submitted Jay R. Palmer with an armbar at 2:35 of round 1 during Combat Sports Challenge 23.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com was first introduced to Maynard while covering the IFL Draft tryouts in New York this past October. Maynard put on an outstanding display of grappling and striking skills en route to earning a berth on the league’s final list of draft-eligible fighters.

This website has shown a commitment towards providing exposure for young and up and coming MMA prospects since its inception. The decision to sponsor Maynard is an extension of that commitment. As a part of the agreement, Maynard will wear a 5 Oz. t-shirt during his cage-walk entrance.

Ring of Combat XIX is scheduled to be headlined by a USKBA middleweight title match between Nick Catone of Ricardo Almeida’s Jit-Jitsu Academy and Brett Linebarger of Daddis Fight Camps.

CSC 23 featured 5 Oz. sponsored fighter LeVon Maynard, who was victorious in the night’s co-main event when he submitted veteran Jay R. Palmer in the first round.

By Jason Guard
Special to FiveOuncesOfPain.com

LeVon Maynard came into his second professional fight against a much more experienced fighter in Jay R. Palmer, with nearly 40 fights to his name. The Combat Sports Challenge hosted both fighters in a co-main event that ironically showed Maynard displaying veteran form while Palmer fought with nearly the same zeal that typified his acclaimed slugfests. Also on hand was Jens “’Lil Evil” Pulver, promoting a partnership with a Richmond based martial arts training center, Combat Sports.

The event was the first night of fights to be shown at Toad’s Place, a brand new music venue in Downtown Richmond, Va. Combat Sports Challenge intends to promote regular MMA and Muay Thai fight cards at Toads Place. The near capacity crowd of 1000-plus was clearly encouraging.

The promotion will have some help in Jens Pulver, who intends to relocate to Richmond in June, after fighting Urijah Faber for the WEC featherweight title. The WEC fighter and former UFC lightweight champ says that he’ll be conducting classes and the gym will be renamed the “Pulver Combat Sports Center.”

Team Combat, responsible for the training of nearly half of the fighters on the card, also announced that they hoped to gain the attention of the UFC by continuing to put on shows under the Combat Sports Challenge moniker with increasingly higher profile fighters. This night’s card featured mostly Virginia based competitors against fighters from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Between the eight amateur fights, and five professional bouts, the Virginians managed to turn away the visitors’ “northern aggression” with a total of nine victories. The next CSC is planned for Toad’s Place on March 15th and Jeff Curran will be a special guest (but I couldn’t find the line up anywhere online).

Maynard also had some high caliber help. Erik Paulson could be seen in Maynard’s corner during the fight. Paulson’s submission specialty (8 subs in 11 wins since 1993) would come in handy on this evening against a wild-fighting Palmer who has lost nine fights due to submission, clearly preferring the “stand and bang” style of his Tae Kwon do background.

The fight starts and Palmer, true to form, charges Maynard at the sound of the bell swinging wildly. Maynard backs up toward his corner, moving his head, avoiding mostly glancing blows. Maynard throws a few of his own and the fighters clinch. Quickly, Maynard presses forward using his superior strength and trips Palmer to the mat, landing on top in full mount. In total control, Maynard sits up in a high mount, trying to free his hands of Palmer’s desperate grip. Punches start reigning down from Maynard until Palmer rolls over, giving up his back.

Palmer, now turtled on the canvas has Maynard wrapped tightly around his back, hooks in and landing shots to the sides of Palmer’s head. Maynard works a hand around the neck of Palmer while slowly flattening out the veteran fighter. As Palmer struggles valiantly, both fighters roll, with Maynard maintaining back control and continuing to work for the rear naked choke. Maynard looks calm throughout, while Palmer struggles to free himself of the rear mount. Just as Palmer begins to twist away, Maynard throws a leg over his face and jerks Palmer’s right arm into near hyperextension and the fight ends with an armbar submission.

After the fight, LeVon Maynard was jubilant, sporting a FiveOuncesofPain.com t-shirt, and running through a list of thank-yous, including one for Palmer, who had taken the fight on 10 days notice. Maynard struck poses and worked a crowd that was clearly excited to have been present for his victory. Before relinquishing the mic, Maynard paused to relay a message to the audience, “Live with a strong spirit. That’s the only way to live.”

Maynard was especially appreciative of the crowd support. “Just coming out into the ring, all the people that were there to support me yelling for me and giving me “props” — I felt like I won the match before I got into the ring. It was a great feeling and in turn I think it allowed me to but on one of my best performances,” Maynard said in an e-mail to FiveOuncesOfPain.com’s Sam Caplan.

Maynard’s positivity may be a harbinger of things to come. Although LeVon has had some difficulty arranging professional fights at this point in his career, his star is clearly ascending. A victory over Palmer, who’s highlight reel is burned into the minds of many MMA fans, will surely inspire those influential in the industry to take notice.

The final fight on the card featured pro-fighters Nelson Sobral, from Canada, and Dwayne “Diesel” Shelton, from Richmond’s Team Combat. After Sobral entered the ring to a song by Soundgarden, Diesel walked to the ring to the tune of Morrisey’s “Irish blood, English heart.”

Shelton suffered three losses in his first three matches, all to current UFC fighters; Cole Miller, Joe Veres, and Din Thomas. The tough road for Diesel may have induced some melancholia, but Shelton is clearly on the upswing, winning his third consecutive fight with a first round victory over Sobral.

After the fight, an excited Shelton exclaimed that he was “ready for a drink,” as he pulled on his “Jesus Didn’t Tap” t-shirt and encouraged the crowd to meet him at the bar for the after-party.

At the close of the show, most of the fighters streamed out of the venue, presumably to change clothes at their nearby hotel. On my way out, I ran into LeVon Maynard and introduced myself after congratulating him on a job well done. I was lucky enough to get his picture holding the trophy for his victory.

Eventually, I resume my preparations for a bike ride at near freezing temperatures and say goodbye LeVon Maynard, probably the nicest professional fighter I ever met (and yes, the first one I met, too, but don’t let that diminish the compliment).

We’ve received word from our correspondent on the scene, reader JayDog, that 5 Oz. of Pain sponsored fighter LeVon Maynard was victorious on Saturday night at Combat Sports Challenge 23, defeating Jay R. Palmer via first round submission.

We’ll have pictures and more content about LeVon’s big win, but in the meantime, here is Jay’s very detailed description of last night’s fight:

“LeVon Maynard comes out to Eminem’s “Til I Collapse,” exemplifying his own attitude of perseverance.

“Palmer, true to form, charges Maynard at the sound of the bell swinging wildly. Maynard backs up toward his corner, moving his head, avoiding mostly glancing blows. Maynard throws a few of his own and the fighters clinch. Quickly, Maynard presses forward using his superior strength and trips Palmer to the mat, landing on top in full mount.

“In total control, Maynard sits up in a high mount, trying to free his hands of Palmer’s desperate grip. Punches start reigning down from Maynard until Palmer rolls over, giving up his back. Palmer, now turtled on the canvas has Maynard wrapped tightly around his back, hooks in and landing shots to the sides of Palmer’s head.

“Maynard works a hand around the neck of Palmer while slowly flattening out the veteran fighter. As Palmer struggles valiantly, both fighters roll, with Maynard maintaining back control and continuing to work for the rear naked choke. Maynard looks calm throughout, while Palmer struggles to free himself of the rear mount.

“Just as Palmer begins to twist away, Maynard throws a leg over his face and jerks Palmer right arm into near hyper-extension and the fight ends with an armbar submission.”

LeVon is now 2-0 as a professional (and 8-1 as an amateur) and has solidified his status as one of the top welterweight prospects in all of MMA. On behalf of the entire staff at 5 Oz., I would just like to congratulate LeVon and his team on the victory.

Update: We’ve received a text message from LeVon and the official time of his match was 2:30. The armbar he used was a rolling armbar.

The following article was written by welterweight prospect LeVon Maynard, who will be sponsored by FiveOuncesOfPain.com for his fight this Saturday, February 23 in Richmond, Virginia against Jay R. Palmer at Combat Sports Challenge 23.

By LeVon Maynard

My name is LeVon Maynard. I train at Global Martial Arts Academy in Virginia Beach, VA with my instructor Mateo De Los Reyes. I have been competing in MMA since May ’05. I had an amateur record of 8-1 before going pro in September ’07. I won my first pro match at CSC 22 by TKO in the 2nd round to a very skilled opponent.

Before I was scheduled to fight at CSC 22 I had tried on several occasions to have my pro debut. On two occasions my opponents backed out at the last moment leaving me without a replacement. Then two other times the event was either postponed or canceled all together. I have to say my run as a pro fighter has been a tough one. If I was fortunate in all my matches I would already be 5-0 as a pro. I don’t know if other fighters have had as much problems as I have in ’07 but I have to say it has been really aggravating.

I just can’t describe how disappointing it is when you spend all the time to train and prepare for a fight only to have everything fall through. Not only does it affect me but also the friends and family that spend their time and money to come out to a show. I was supposed to have a fight in Jacksonville, FL early last year but the fighter didn’t show up. My family and friends surprised me and actually spent their money to fly all the way out there from New York and Virginia only to find out that the fight was canceled. I can’t describe how that made me feel. I can’t stand “no shows” that back out at the last minute.

If you’re not going to fight or if you’re scared or whatever the case is, don’t wait till the day of the fight or weigh ins to decide not to show up. Have the courtesy to call the promoter in advance and let him know the reason(s) for backing out. Even though I have only one pro fight I have been training like a pro for a long time. If you want to be a professional you have to act like a professional. I am just trying to move up the ladder and make a name for myself.

In between my fights I continue to compete in grappling tournaments and have recently tried out and made the 2008 IFL Draft in New York. They contacted me in December and wanted to set me up with a match with Rory Markham at the Dec 29th Grand Prix. At the time of the call he was 14-3 as a pro fighter with me holding a lowly 1-0 pro record. I’m not sure whether they figured they could toss me in there like a “tomato can” perhaps to add another win to his record, or they have recognized in me the spirit of a determined athlete, the strange thing was it was not important what they thought or how they thought the match would play out.

I am fully confident in my abilities and told them I would take the fight with no hesitation. This would be a big opportunity to show my talents in front of a big audience and show people that I can stand with the best of them. Things would not play out as I was hoping they would as the IFL rep contacted the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission and they made the determination that the fight would not take place because of the discrepancy between our records. As a result, after a few calls to some other draftees they determined that Brett Cooper would be a more suitable match up with Rory.

I have to say I was envious to hear that Brett pulled off the win against Rory and the amount of noise people made over the win. But he did a terrific job and I wish him all the best, I just wish that I had got the same opportunity. But you know what they say “Hakuna Matata.” It’s all good. I’ll keep training and fighting and I am confident that my chance will surely come.

I have a fight scheduled for the 23rd of February at CSC 23 in Richmond, Virginia against Jay R. Palmer. I am very excited about this show as it is suppose to be one of the nicest venues in Richmond and the production value for the show is supposed to be over the top. I want to go in there and put on a fantastic show and hopefully get people to see me as a top level martial artist. At the moment, I am not nervous about the fight but I am sure I will have a few nerves right before getting into the ring, up until the first punch is thrown. After that point, I’ll be in there just having fun, doing the stuff I love to do. Maybe the only thing I am worried about at the moment is whether my opponent will back out as I have experienced this in the past.

Right now, I am actually jamming the keys hard on the keyboard just thinking about it. Hmm…I think it actually makes me more angry than worried (lol). My instructor (Mateo De Los Reyes) is having Erik Paulson out for a seminar on the same weekend and if everything pans out Erik will be cornering me for the match as well. That would be an honor to have him working my corner.

I have to say I have had such an adventure the last few years in my hopes of becoming a successful mixed martial artist. I have had my ups and downs in this sport but I am confident good things are sure to come my way. I love competing and I can’t imagine stopping anytime soon. I guess awhile back I came across a saying and have lived by it ever since:

“Determination…a strong will, the will to look only towards victory despite tough situations. The spirit of a man, with such determination, will energize his worn out body and enable him to throw more punches. Victory comes only from having strong determination.”

Palmer.

According to LeVon, CSC promoters decided to make the change after Powers was non-respondent to correspondance.

The situation is nothing new for the welterweight prospect, as he has been limited to just one pro fight due to several opponents pulling out of previously scheduled bouts.

With the late change, Maynard is now slated to compete against a fighter with vast more pro experience than him. While Powers was scheduled to make his pro debut, Palmer is a veteran of 40 fights with a record of 19-20-1, according to FCFighter.com.

Despite the sub-.500 record, Palmer has competed against household names such as Kurt Pellegrino, Harris Sarmiento, Ivan Menjivar, Andy Wang, John Alessio, and Brian Gassaway. He holds wins over both Sarmeinto and Gassaway.

“I don’t know how I feel about this situation but I told the promoter I would take the fight,” Maynard said in an e-mail to 5 Oz. “I am never one to underestimate anyone but I hope Jay R. Palmer is going to bring ‘the funk’ into the ring because I have been training like I am about to fight a UFC champion. I want to put on a great show.”

FiveOuncesOfPain.com was first introduced to Maynard (1-0 pro; 8-1 amateur) while covering the IFL Draft tryouts in New York this past October. Maynard put on an outstanding display of grappling and striking skills en route to earning a berth on the league’s final list of approved draft prospects.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com has shown a commitment towards providing exposure for young and up and coming MMA prospects since its inception. The decision to sponsor Maynard is an extension of that commitment. As a part of the agreement, Maynard will wear a 5 Oz. t-shirt to and from the cage and will also feature a 5 Oz. logo on his fight shorts.
