May 09, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: Calvin Kattar, CBS Saturday Night Fights, CBS, James "Binky" Jones, EliteXC 4 Comments →

binky_profile.jpgA lightweight (155 lbs.) encounter between James “Binky” Jones and Calvin Kattar is the latest fight for the undercard of EliteXC’s debut CBS show on May 31 to be finalized.

A source first informed FiveOuncesOfPain.com of the news on Wednesday and we were able to confirm the news with Jones himself on Thursday evening.

Jones’ involvement with the show was first reported by the website FightTicker.com several weeks ago, however, his opponent wasn’t finalized until earlier this week.

Jones, a resident of the Baltimore area, has a substantial following in the Mid-Atlantic region and is a part of Team Ground Control and Team Rawdogg. Trained by John Rallo, Jones is 6-6 according to Sherdog.com’s fight finder. He’s currently on a two fight win streak and looked dominant in recent wins over Mark Getto during ShoXC’s Jan. 25 event and Al Buck during Ring of Combat 18 on March 7.

Currently on a four fight win streak, Damm recently competed on May 3 during Freestyle Combat Challenge 35, where she knocked out Lashonda Knox at 0:11 of round 1.

Report: Fickett out due to injury; 5 other bouts announced for EliteXC’s June 14th show

May 02, 2008 By: Sam Cupitt Category: Dave Herman, Yves Edwards, Wayne Cole, Ron Waterman, Rafael Feijao, Tony Bonello, Muhsin Corbbrey, Jake Shields, Nick Diaz, EliteXC, Murilo Rua, K.J. Noons, Drew Fickett 7 Comments →

MMA Weekly is reporting that Drew Fickett has had to pull out of his June 14 welterweight title fight with Jake Shields due to a knee injury.

The news comes from EliteXC Vice President Jared Shaw who was a recent guest on MMA Weekly radio.

From MMA Weekly:

“Obviously the back injury happened (to Shields) and the easiest thing to do was move him to Hawaii to fight Drew,” said Shaw in the interview with MMAWeekly Radio. “Unfortunately since then Drew Fickett has hurt his knee and he’s not going to be able to take that fight on June 14 and that will be rescheduled again.”

By “rescheduled again,” Shaw is referring to a scheduled March 29th bout between the two that didn’t go through due to Shields’ aforementioned back injury.

In addition to revealing Fickett’s injury, Shaw also announced five bouts for the June 14th show set to take place in Hawaii. The bouts are as follows:

  • K.J. Noons vs. Yves Edwards (for EliteXC’s lightweight title)
  • Nick Diaz vs. Muhsin Corbbrey
  • Murilo Rua vs. Tony Bonello
  • Wayne Cole vs. Rafael Feijao
  • Dave Herman vs. Ron Waterman

CBS Chairman Redstone not a fan of MMA

May 02, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: EliteXC 9 Comments →

VIACOM and CBS chairman Sumner Redstone has spoken out about his network’s decision to begin televising mixed martial arts in the form of Elite Xtreme Combat on Saturday, May 31. The news comes courtesy of a report in the Hollywood Reporter.

Redstone, speaking during a panel discussion about the sports industry at the Milken Institute Global Conference, was critical of CBS President and CEO Les Moonves, proclaiming Moonves’ decision to televised MMA was probably a mistake and not “socially responsible.”

Simply put, the 84-year old is just not a fan of MMA.

“I’m a lover not a fighter,” Redstone said. “I don’t like the sport.”

Fox Sports president Ed Goren also spoke at the conference and was even more critical of MMA.

“We don’t need money that badly,” Goren is quoted as saying in the Hollywood Reporter article.

Goren’s comments were especially interesting amidst rumors that the UFC is speaking to FOX about a possible deal that would bring MMA to the network. Adam Swift of MMAPayout.com is reporting that the UFC is talking to FOX’s entertainment division, not its sports division.

CBS Saturday Night Fights: Joey Villasenor to replace “Ninja” Rua

April 17, 2008 By: Adam Morgan Category: Joey Villasenor, EliteXC 3 Comments →

21955_vjpebcoldh_vlarge.jpgJust today CBS released the official lineup for the televised card and already there’s been a change. According to ProElite.com, Murilo “Ninja” Rua has been replaced by Joey Villasenor in a middleweight bout against Phil Baroni at CBS Saturday Night Fights on May 31st.

Villasenor is coming off of a knockout victory over Ryan Jensen at at the end of last month. No reason was given for Rua’s exit from the card.

This should be a better matchup for Baroni because Villasenor likes to throw caution to the wind and brawl. Rua’s jiu jitsu could have proved to be a problem for Baroni if the fight hit the ground and this matchup is much better for him style-wise.

As for the card itself, if you’re expecting to see much ground action it looks like you might be mistaken. The card is stacked with strikers which is probably a good thing for the first CBS event.

Report: EliteXC signs Cyril Diabate

April 16, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: Cyril Diabate, EliteXC 4 Comments →

EliteXC has signed PRIDE and Cage Rage veteran Cyril “The Snake” Diabate, according to a report by Brian Knapp of The Fight Network.

Knapp confirmed the news with Diabate’s manager, Ken Pavia. A debut date and an opponent has not been determined.

Diabate, who has a lifetime pro MMA record of 12-6-1, according to Sherdog.com, is a French-born kickboxer and is regarded by many as one of the top pure strikers in MMA. While Dan Henderson was preparing for his fight vs. Anderson Silva at UFC 82, Diabate was recruited to join his training camp at Team Quest’s location in Temecula, Calif.

The 34-year old has been defeated just once in his last six fights. However, Diabate has not fought in almost a year, with his last bout coming at Cage Rage 21 on April 21, 2007. In that bout he recorded a first round submission over Ryan Robinson when he secured an armbar just 1:15 into the fight.

Prior to the win over Robinson, Diabate competed at PRIDE “Final Conflict” on September 10, 2006, where he suffered a first round TKO loss due to stomps to current UFC light heavyweight Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

The Rules of MMA for CBS Saturday Night Fights (video)

April 14, 2008 By: Adam Morgan Category: CBS Saturday Night Fights, EliteXC 9 Comments →

Here’s a quick video clip of referee Herb Dean going over the rules for mixed martial arts bouts in preparation for the May 31st CBS Saturday Night Fights event. CBS released this video on their official YouTube profile and hopefully it airs several times before the fights on May 31st. It features Nick Diaz and Jake Shields with Herb going over the finer points of the rules to show people that MMA isn’t “barbarism” like some have called it.

This is exactly the kind of thing that EliteXC and CBS should be doing to gain more viewers. Like it or not, there are still people who are clueless about the sport and hate it for no apparent reason other than “it’s too violent.” Well, of course it’s violent. It’s a fight. But there are plenty of rules and regulations, things you can and cannot do. And it’s much more regulated than most people who know nothing about it believe. Like I said, hopefully this is aired several times before the fights so people can go into the thing with an open mind.

(Video) Bill O’Reilly questions MMA on CBS

April 11, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: EliteXC 20 Comments →

Thanks to the gang at MMAMania.com, I was finally able to see what the big hub-bub was in regards to Bill O’Reilly’s anti-MMA comments made on his nightly show, the “O’Reilly Factor.”

What he had to say wasn’t pretty but I don’t think his comments will have a positive or negative impact. I’m sure his core group of viewers support his viewpoint but are those the same viewers that would watch MMA anyway?

You can watch the video below but you’ll need to forward to the 2:15 mark as much of the segment is focused on discussing the biggest bust in network TV news history, Katie Couric.

Watch the video and then chime in with your thoughts about the following question: is negative press surrounding EliteXC’s deal with CBS good for the company?

Report: EliteXC signs Hector Lombard

April 08, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: Hector Lombard, EliteXC 1 Comment →

l_01d80ef80f10a0c11c4024e50dad761e.jpgAustralia-based mixed martial arts promotion Cage Fighting Championship has announced via its official website that Hector Lombard, the promotion’s current middleweight champion, has signed with ProElite-owned Elite Xtreme Combat.

EliteXC has yet to confirm CFC’s announcement.

Lombard had previously been reported as signing a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship and had been officially announced by the UFC as fighting Karo Parisyan at UFC 78 this past November. However, Lombard, a Cuban national who resides in Australia, was eventually replaced by Ryo Chonnan after visa issues prevented him from entering the United States.

Lombard, a renowned Judoka, is 15-2-1 and has competed for various international promotions during an MMA career that spans four years. Most notably, Lombard fought two bouts for the Pride Fighting Championships in Japan, compiling an 0-2 record. He lost a unanimous decision to Akihiro Gono in his debut for the promotion at Pride Bushido 11 in June of 2006. He then returned to Pride at Bushido 13 in November of 2006, losing in another unanimous decision, this time to Gegard Mousasi, the occasional striking coach for Fedor Emelianenko.

No indication of a start date with EliteXC for Lombard was made in the CFC announcement, however, he will make at least one final title defense for CFC when he faces Fabiano Copoani at CFC 4 on May 23.

It is unknown whether Lombard will be allowed to fight in the U.S. after having been denied entry late last year. It is possible that he has or will become a naturalized citizen of Australia. It’s also possible that he could fight for one of ProElite’s international brands.

Top Ten Tantrums

April 01, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: EliteXC 19 Comments →

This past weekend MMA journalists were subjected to another lecture regarding rankings by a promoter grandstanding for his fighters.

No, Dana White wasn’t making the case for Anderson Silva as the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world this past Saturday in San Jose, Calif. Instead, we had EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw stating that Jake Shields in the number one fighter in his weight class and that Cung Le is a top ten middleweight.

Shaw is entitled to his opinion but so am I. And I beg to differ on both of his assertions. Normally I wouldn’t make a big stink but I hate it when a promoter tries to guilt the media into giving his fighters more props. It’s self-serving and insulting in the sense that it implies we aren’t knowledgeable enough to form our own opinions and we should just take their word for it — as if they are impartial in regards to the matter of world rankings.

My issue when White made his campaign for Silva following UFC 82 wasn’t the content of his message, but the context. It’s hard to make a case against Silva as the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Personally, I don’t agree. That said, I realize I am in the minority in the belief that Georges St. Pierre is number one with Silva being ranked two. My issue was White pretty much saying that if you don’t think Silva is number one that you’re an idiot and or you’re only withholding him as number one because you don’t like Dana White.

fight_pics_0021.jpg Elite Xtreme Combat has signed former NFL player Bobby Jones to a contract, ProElite.com (SamCaplan.ProElite.com) has confirmed exclusively through Jones’ manager, Mike Camp.

An undefeated heavyweight with a record of 2-0, Jones first made his MMA debut on August 24, 2007 during a Fight Fest show in Ohio, where he recorded a TKO over Darby Hodge at just 0:34 into round 1. He followed up his successful debut with a second victory this past January when he recorded another TKO in the first round, this time against William Clifford.

Jones is a graduate of Penn State and in addition to lettering in football for the university as an offensive lineman, he was also a member of the wrestling team as a senior. Additionally, Jones was also a high school wrestling champion.

After Penn State, Jones played one season for the New York Giants in 2002. He appeared in 11 games that year but was eventually released. He continued his pro football career with a brief stint in the Arena Football League and was also a high school teacher.

Exclusive: Gina Carano vs. Kaitlin Young likely scheduled for EliteXC’s first show on CBS

March 26, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: Kaitlin Young, Gina Carano, EliteXC 4 Comments →

82216_lhcaarhtoa_vlarge.jpgA female MMA bout between Gina Carano and Kaitlin Young is expected to be added to the card for EliteXC’s first show on CBS, FiveOuncesOfPain.com (www.FiveOuncesOfPain.com) has learned exclusively through sources.

EliteXC’s debut show on CBS is scheduled for Saturday, May 31, at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Carano, 5-0, last competed on September 15 during EliteXC: Uprising in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she recorded the first submission victory of her career when she tapped out Tonya Evinger with a rear naked choke at just 2:53 of round 1. She has undergone an extended layoff from fighting due in large part to her involvement in NBC’s hit television show “American Gladiators.”

She will have her work cut out for her in her return bout aginst Young, who made national headlines after winning an eight-woman, single night tournament last November during a HOOKnSHOOT that was sponsored by BodogFIGHT. Young won each of her fights in dominant fashion, recording three first round knockouts inside of one minute.

Young last competed on February 1 on the undercard of a BodogFIGHT sponsored show that was headlined by Nick Thompson vs. John Troyer. She suffered the first professional loss of her career after submitting to Sara Schneider due to armbar at 0:35 of round 2.

EliteXC’s first show on CBS will be headlined by Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson vs. an unnamed opponent. Other bouts scheduled include EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith; Phil Baroni vs. Murilo “Ninja” Rua; and a swing bout featuring heavyweight prospects Jon Murphy vs. Brett Rogers.

Here’s the commercial that played during primetime television last night during the USC vs. Kansas State game, one of the marquee games of the first round of the NCAA tournament. It was only on once that I saw, but it was in a very nice time slot for the maximum amount of exposure. Hopefully we see the second advertisement, which I think is better, during tomorrow’s games. Exclusive: Details start to emerge regarding first EliteXC show on CBS

March 19, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: CBS, EliteXC 26 Comments →

102393_diftppgmqf_vlarge.jpg

While a press release promised by EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw regarding details pertaining to the promotion’s first show CBS never materialized on Wednesday, FiveOuncesOfPain.com (www.FiveOuncesOfPain.com) has learned key details through multiple sources about the show that we can now report.

The show is expected to take place on May 31 in New Jersey. While a specific location has not been finalized, the Prudential Center in Newark is considered the likeliest candidate to host the show. The Prudential Center is the same venue in which UFC 78 was held this past November.

It has been confirmed that the show will be headlined by Kimbo Slice against a yet to be named opponent. It is possible that the opponent has been finalized, but we have not be able to determine his identity.

While Slice’s opponent is not known, we do know that Scott Smith will be taking on Robbie Lawler in a five round fight in which Lawler’s EliteXC middleweight title will be on the line.

Gina Carano is also expected to make her return to the promotion on the show against a yet to be determined opponent. Shaw hinted as Carano’s involvement on the show while speaking during a Tuesday conference call to promote the March 29 bout between Frank Shamrock and Cung Le.

Based on the current configuration of EliteXC’s women’s division, Kaitlin Young and Cris Cyborg would have to be considered the leading candidates to oppose Carano on the show.

A swing bout featuring heavyweight prospects Brett Rogers and Jon Murphy is also in the works as well, although bout agreements by both parties have yet to be signed. It is believed that both fighters have verbally agreed to the matchup. The proposed match between Rogers and Murphy would serve as a swing bout.

We will have more details as they become available.

Exclusive: Lawler nearing extension with EliteXC; expected to appear on first CBS show

March 18, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: Robbie Lawler, EliteXC No Comments →

871_lqkokrgdgn_vlarge.jpg

ProElite.com (SamCaplan.ProElite.com) has learned that EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler could be on the verge of finalizing a contract extension with the promotion.

ProElite.com has also learned that Lawler is expected to be involved on EliteXC’s inaugural card on CBS, believed to be taking place in May. A formal announcement from CBS in regard to the date of the first card and the fighters involved is expected to be made on Wednesday.

Lawler, 15-4, has been idle since winning the EliteXC middleweight title from Murilo “Ninja” Rua at EliteXC’s “Uprising” event on September 15 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He had been scheduled to defend his ICON Sport middleweight title against Kala Kolohe Hose in December but the fight was canceled after Lawler reportedly sustained a biceps injury while training for the fight.

CBS to announce date and matches for first EliteXC show on Wednesday

March 18, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: CBS, EliteXC 4 Comments →

CBS will issue a worldwide press release on Wednesday that will officially announce the date of EliteXC’s first show on its network along with some of the fighters that will be featured. The revelation was made by EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw during a Tuesday press conference to promote the combined EliteXC/Strikeforce fight card on March 29 that will feature Frank Shamrock vs. Cung Le.

When pressed by a reporter for details, Shaw was steadfast in stating that he would not leak any information before CBS’ release. However, he did indicate that some people could be surprised when they hear who has been selected for the announce team.

A reporter also asked about when Robbie Lawler and Gina Carano would compete for the promotion again and Shaw addressed the question by telling everyone to wait for Wednesday’s press release from CBS.

ProElite, Inc. hires new Chief Executive Officer

March 14, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: ProElite, EliteXC 1 Comment →

During a post-fight press conference following Cage Rage 25 last Saturday night in London, EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw revealed that an announcement concerning a change with parent company ProElite’s Chief Executive Officer was about to be made by the company.

According to a recent SEC filing obtained by FiveOuncesOfPain.com (www.FiveOuncesOfPain.com) through ProElite’s corporate website, former Youbet.com CEO Charles Champion has been named ProElite’s new chief executive, replacing former CEO Doug DeLuca. DeLuca has been elevated to the position of Executive Chairman of the company’s Board of Directors and also its Chief Strategy Officer.

Fantasy Booking EliteXC’s First Show on CBS

March 11, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: CBS, EliteXC 12 Comments →

Bouts for EliteXC’s first-ever telecast on CBS have yet to be formally announced yet speculation about which fighters will be involved with the card is starting to heat up. In light of the growing curiosity of the much-anticipated show, I decided to do some fantasy booking for the show in regard to what I think is the best strategic approach to take. I want to preface that the matches I will propose in this article are simply my personal ideas and are based on no inside information (unless expressly stated).

I want to start off but stating that I think EliteXC should wait to hold the show until June. As of now, late-April and early-May have been discussed by the media as the potential time-frame for the first show but I subscribe to the theory that you only get one chance to make a first impression. A lot is riding on the first show and the more time that’s devoted to planning, the better. The additional time available to market the fights and the more time allotted to fighters to train for specific opponents could make a noticeable difference when it comes to the end product.

The June date is also essential if published reports that the promotion is looking to hold the show in New Jersey are true. Right now the Jersey MMA market is being flooded with shows. Regional promotions such as Ring of Combat and BattleCage Xtreme are holding cards in Atlantic City during the months of March and April while national promotions such as Bob Meyrowitz’s YAMMA Pit Fighting and the IFL are scheduled to hold shows in the state in April.

Adding to the complexity of the situation is that the Prudential Center in Newark is under consideration for the first show, according to this week’s print edition of the Wrestling Observer. The Prudential Center is a large arena and it might not be the best time to sell tickets to a New Jersey/Philadelphia/New York fanbase that might be lacking funds following an active two months of shows.

Here’s the five-match card that I’d like to see for the CBS debut:

Ken Shamrock looked old last night

March 09, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: EliteXC, Ken Shamrock 48 Comments →

Back in the day, I was the biggest Ken Shamrock mark on the planet. In high school, I literally believed he was the “World’s Most Dangerous Man.” I went to three different high schools, and at this one, there were a bunch of martial arts posers. They’d say stuff like, “My master is a tenth-degree black belt” or “My Sensei once killed a man in competition.”

They’d also debate whether Jean Claude Van Damme or Steven Segal would win in a fight or whether Jackie Chan could hang with Bruce Lee in a real fight. Normally I’d keep my mouth shut but at a certain point I’d interject my belief that Shamrock would kill them all. Hey, I was in high school and a Shamrock mark, so cut me some slack.

Having been such a big Shamrock fan at one point, it was very difficult watching him lose last night to Robert “Buzz” Berry during SHOWTIME’s telecast of Cage Rage 25. Forget about beating Lee, Segal, or Ralph Macchio, Shamrock can’t even beat a dude named Buzz Berry.

Ken has to do what he feels he needs to do, and if the man needs to cash a few more paychecks, then he’s earned that right. However, I would really like to see him walk away as a competitive fighter because he’s looked awful in televised fights vs. Rich Franklin, Tito Ortiz, and now Berry. He’s looked so bad that I really feel it is tarnishing his legacy. When a younger fan hears that in his prime that Shamrock was once the best in the world, their estimation of MMA/NHB from back in the day must be shit.

I don’t know how else to say; Ken Shamrock looked old last night. He had a lot of trouble moving (he looked about as mobile as “Big Baby” Glenn Davis before he lost the weight) and he was out boxed last night by a guy in Berry whose boxing is mechanically flawed. Berry was punching from a low slot last night, which makes a fighter prone to getting knocked out because a superior puncher can just punch over top. Seeing Shamrock lose like that was tough to swallow.

But the bigger story here is that EliteXC managed to blow a potentially big main event between Kimbo Slice and Shamrock. According to Shamrock, the fight was being talked about.

“The groundwork has already been laid, and we talked about it,” Shamrock is quoted as saying during a recent news update posted on The Fight Network’s website. “I think he is a phenomenal puncher and a big, strong individual. He’s got a lot of ability, man. But I also know he’s very young in the sport, and there are a lot of things he doesn’t know. Hopefully, I can exploit some of them.”

With Shamrock refusing to abandon his ground game, Slice would have been a certain victor. Slice vs. Shamrock would have been a perfect CBS main event and a way to build Slice’s resume against a non-threatening opponent. What was the point of booking Shamrock vs. Berry in the first place?

Announcers Mauro Ranallo and Stephen Quadros pitched the idea at the end of SHOWTIME’s telecast of Cage Rage 25 of Berry being a potential candidate to fight Slice. I think Berry seems like a natural next step for Slice, however, when Slice beats him, who is going to care? What kind of drama can you build behind a Slice vs. Berry fight?

Personally, I think EliteXC should consider signing a main event between Slice and Sean Gannon for the first CBS show. Granted, most of EliteXC’s audience will have never heard of Gannon, but because of his past win over Kimbo in an unsanctioned fight, you have a selling point that you can present to potential viewers.

In an MMA-rules match, my money would be on Kimbo to take that fight. He’s simply a much better fighter at this point than when he fought Gannon the first time. In the end though, the biggest issue will be money. Several promoters have tried to book an MMA-rules fight between Kimbo and Gannon and each time the deal breaker was Gannon’s asking price.
