Coming off the heels of his spirited title challenge against WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit at WEC 35 this past August, Hiromitsu Miura is finally set to return to action at WEC 38 on January 25 in San Diego, California against newcomer Edgar Garcia.

Garcia was signed to the WEC after accumulating a 6-0 record while competing on the Arizona MMA scene. His most recent victory took place at Total Combat 30 in August, where he recorded a first round TKO over Waylon Kennell. All but one of Garcia’s victories have been first round finishes.

Miura, 9-5, is a former middleweight competitor who is 2-2 in four career WEC fights. The Japan native made his debut for the promotion at WEC 27 in May of 2007, losing a unanimous decision to Jason “Mayhem” Miller. He then proceeded to record back-to-back victories against Fernando Gonzalez at WEC 29 and Blas Avena at WEC 33.

However, it was his loss to Condit which earned him his greatest acclaim in the U.S. Despite being TKO’d by Condit at 4:43 of round 4, Miura went toe-to-toe with the defending champion for most of the bout and provided his stiffest test to date while competing in the WEC.

WEC 38 is scheduled to be held at the San Diego Sports Arena with the event also being televised on VERSUS. Featured matchups on the show include WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner defending his title vs. Donald Cerrone and Urijah Faber rematching Jens Pulver.

UFN 13 is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2 in Broomfield, Colorado and will feature matches between Kenny Florian vs. Joe Lauzon, Houston Alexander vs. James Irvin, Stephan Bonnar vs. Matt Hamill, Thiago Alves vs. Karo Parisyan, Marcus Aurelio vs. Spencer Fisher, and Sami Schiavo vs. Clay Guida.

Edgar, 8-0, last competed at UFC 78 in Newark, NJ this past November, when he recorded a unanimous decision over Fisher.

Edgar revealed that he anticipates a wrestling war between the two. He also said that he believes he could get to showcase his jiu-jitsu skills, as he anticipates ending up on his back vs. Maynard.

The New Jersey-native plans to spend some time in California training for the fight and will work with Dave Camirillo at the American Kickboxing Academy in March.

Maynard, a product of Randy Couture’s Xtreme Couture gym in Las Vegas, appeared on the fifth season of Spike TV’s “Ultimate Fighter” reality TV show. Like Edgar, Maynard is also undefeated (4-0) with his last win coming against Dennis Siver at UFC Fight Night 12 on January 23.

411mania.com was able to get exclusive comments from referee Steve Mazzagatti, who presided over the Rob Emerson vs. Gray Maynard no contest that took place this past Saturday during the TUF 5 season finale.

In regard to the decision:

“I stopped the fight as Rob was in pain. I did not see a tap, but I don’t see what it matters. In boxing we give both fighters an 8 count and may count one or both fighters out. In this sport we don’t have an 8 count. But both fighters were done. Should a fighter who is out win? I don’t have time to think about all this stuff but I hope we can learn. I do think it was the right call.

“I also want to say the call was mine. I informed the commission that both fighters were unable to continue. That was my call.”

I still disagree with the decision. Mazzagatti didn’t even acknowledge Maynard’s condition until after the fight. He was completely focused on Emerson.

In any event, a rematch between Maynard and Emerson is already in the works, as is a possible rematch between Nate Diaz and Manny Gamburyan. However, the Diaz vs. Gamburyan may have to wait because it’s looking likely as though he’ll undergo surgery.

Update: In a previous version of this story I incorrectly stated that Loretta Hunt fromThe Fight Network had reported that UFC president Dana White was seen speaking with Mazzagatti and NSAC officials after the fight was stopped. Loretta never reported that and it was irresponsible on my part to attribute those comments to her.
