UFC 87: Lesnar vs. Coleman off; Fitch vs. St. Pierre on

May 22, 2008 By: Adam Morgan Category: UFC 87, Mark Coleman, Jon Fitch, Georges St. Pierre, Brock Lesnar 23 Comments →

Well, the hits just keep on coming for the UFC as competitors continue to fall off cards. According to UFC.com, the fight between Brock Lesnar and Mark Coleman that was scheduled for UFC 87 is now off due to a knee injury sustained by Coleman. The UFC is keeping Lesnar on the card, however, and plans to announce an opponent shortly.

UFC.com has also announced that a main event title fight has been added between current UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre taking on number one contender Jon Fitch in a five round title fight.

Also on the UFC 87 card is a lightweight clash between Roger Huerta and Kenny Florian, most likely to determine the number one contender for the lightweight crown.

Even with Coleman now off the card, this one is shaping up to be a good one.

Rumor: Thiago Alves In Line For Title Shot Behind Jon Fitch

April 09, 2008 By: Ram Maramba Category: Ram Maramba, Jon Fitch, Thiago Alves, Karo Parisyan 8 Comments →

That’s the word according to Thiago Alves himself. From an MMAJunkie.com report on Alves’ appearance on TAGG Radio:

“Right now I heard I’m right behind Jon Fitch,” Alves said. “That’s what (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva told me.”

Coming off a stunning knockout of Karo Parisyan at UFN 13, Alves has jumped to second in line for a chance at the welterweight belt. The long-debated positioning of Pariysan and Fitch was settled when Fitch was tabbed a few weeks ago for the first shot at the belt after the rematch between Georges St. Pierre and Matt Serra on April 19 at UFC 83. Parisyan and Alves were the popular choices to take the third slot and Alves’ definitive victory cemented his status as number three on the chart.

UFC 82 Post-Fight Video: Jon Fitch talks title shot

March 05, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: UFC 82, Jon Fitch 10 Comments →

The more I hear Jon Fitch talk, the more I like this guy. I really have to question the judgment of anyone who at one point felt Fitch wasn’t marketable.

Dana White: Jon Fitch “is in line for a title shot” after GSP vs. Serra

March 03, 2008 By: Adam Morgan Category: Jon Fitch 13 Comments →

Apparently Jon Fitch’s 8-0 record inside the Octagon have earned him a title shot according to a report at the Dayton Daily News. Here’s a quote from Dana White on the matter:

“This kid, in my opinion … he has the Chuck Liddell mentality,” said UFC president Dana White, referring to the UFC’s iconic superstar. “This kid will fight anyone, anywhere … He’s definitely paid his dues.

“He is in line for a title shot once this whole Matt Serra and Georges St. Pierre thing gets figured out.”

I have to agree with Dana, here. He certainly has earned his way to a title shot. One would have to think that it will most likely be against Georges St. Pierre, although Serra could do the unthinkable twice in a row. If St. Pierre does win, I don’t see Fitch winning a fight between the two. It would probably be a real grinder of a fight, similar to what we saw when St. Pierre fought Josh Koscheck. GSP’s game is so tight that even someone as well rounded as Fitch will have a lot of trouble with him, especially on the feet. Win or lose, Fitch has paid his dues and congrats to him for earning the title shot.

The real question is: What is Karo Parisyian thinking about all this?

5 Oz. Exclusive Q&A with Jon Fitch: Welterweight title contender talks Lesnar, predicts the outcome of Serra vs. GSP, reveals that an AKA teammate could be on the verge of a UFC debut, and more!

i-9cfc1.jpg

In just under two weeks UFC welterweight title contender Jon Fitch will return to the Octagon at UFC 82 in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, March 1. Fitch, a former standout wrestler at Purdue University, had been scheduled to take on former PRIDE fighter Akihiro Gono. However, Gono was forced to pull out of the match after he was injured in training. In place of Gono, the UFC went out and signed IFL and BodogFIGHT veteran Chris Wilson to a contract.

While casual fans may not be familiar with Wilson, he poses a stiff challenge. The Team Quest product has a formidable ground game but is also an underrated striker. Prior to his signing, Wilson was without question one of the best 170 pound fighters not competing in the UFC.

Fitch is well aware of Wilson’s status in the MMA world and is not taking him lightly. FiveOuncesOfPain.com (www.FiveOuncesOfPain.com) was able to catch up with Fitch for an exclusive interview to not only get his thoughts on Wilson, but also his thoughts on how far he feels he’s away from a title shot, his feelings about Karo Parisyan, and more. He even breaks some news about a teammate from the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose that will possibly be making his UFC debut at UFC 83 in April.

Sam Caplan: It might have been more than a year ago, but at one point you expressed some displeasure with how the UFC was marketing you, especially considering that some of your fights weren’t being televised. Your profile has increased a lot recently. Do you feel you are finally being marketed properly?

Jon Fitch: Yeah, they are actually making a push to put me on commercials and let people know about me more. I’m (also) doing more interviews to let people know about me and stuff like that. So yeah, they are marketing me much better but I put them in a position where they had to. How are you not going to market someone who is 7-0 in your organization?

Sam Caplan: There was some talk that maybe you would be involved with the seventh season of “The Ultimate Fighter” as a coach. Obviously, Forrest Griffin and Quinton Jackson got the coaching slots. But was that ever something that was discussed with you?

Jon Fitch: No, that was never offer and no one ever approached me with anything.

Sam Caplan: Would it be something you’d be interested in for the future?

Jon Fitch: I don’t know, it depends. The terms would have to be right. You know, I’m more concerned with my own training than being on TV or being famous and all that other crap. So, if it interfered in my training in any way (then) I wouldn’t do it.

Sam Caplan: Chris Wilson is your opponent for UFC 82 on March 1. He was tapped as a replacement for Akihiro Gono. What’s your feeling about the change, and who do you consider to be the tougher of the two?

Jon Fitch: It’s hard to compare because their styles are so different. Gono is for sure more tested; he’s been around a lot longer and he has fought a lot more top level people but at the same time there’s more video and more resources to find out about him and his style. Wilson is a bit of a mystery; I have some video and stuff on him but up and comers are hard to deal with because they can be just as tough as the best guys in the world and you just don’t know anything about them. That’s the main problem with the public; they tend to have to be spoonfed as far as who is good and who is the best through the media and a lot of the time the media just doesn’t get that job done as far as explaining just how good (certain) fighters are.

Sam Caplan: Along those lines, let’s stick on that point. Who do you feel are some fighters that you feel aren’t getting the promotion they deserve? Guys that you feel are really underrated or under-appreciated?

Jon Fitch: One of the biggest ones I’ve got I would think has to be Jake Shields. I think that’s pretty obvious. On the underground level people know a lot about who he is but he’s one of the best welterweights out there but your typical average UFC fan has no idea who he is. I think that’s a sign that says our sport really isn’t where it needs to be yet.

Sam Caplan: Jake Shields is based out of Cesar Gracie’s camp but has indicated that he’s occasionally got some sparring in at AKA…

Jon Fitch: Yeah, he came in and worked out with us on Monday and Gilbert (Melendez) was in today. He comes down and we work out sometimes with him. We benefit from him and he benefits from us so I think that’s a good business relationship. He’s a good guy too, we’re friends.

Sam Caplan: You’ve sparred with Shields in the past so I’d be curious to know how you think he’d stack up in the UFC’s welterweight division?

Jon Fitch: He would do just fine. I wouldn’t have made that statement before if I didn’t believe he couldn’t fight the top guys in the UFC’s welterweight division.

Sam Caplan: There’s a lot of speculation now that if you beat Wilson that you are next in line for a welterweight title shot. Has the UFC given you such an indication?

Jon Fitch to face Chris Wilson at UFC 82?

January 22, 2008 By: Sam Cupitt Category: Chris Wilson, Jon Fitch 7 Comments →

Sherdog.com is reporting that a fight between top welterweight contender, Jon Fitch and UFC newcomer Chris Wilson is close to being signed.

Jon Fitch was set to take on Akihiro Gono at UFC 82 but the veteran Japanese fighter had to pull out with a hand injury he sustained in his fight with Tamdan McCrory at UFC 78.

Chris Wilson is a veteran of the IFL organisation and has a 13-3 record, and has a win over current IFL welterweight champion, Jay Hieron.

Jon Fitch signs contract extension; signed to fight Akihiro Gono at UFC 82

January 09, 2008 By: Adam Morgan Category: UFC 82, Akihiro Gono, Jon Fitch 25 Comments →

MMA Mania has confirmed that top UFC welterweight Jon Fitch has signed a bout agreement to fight Akihiro Gono at UFC 82 and that he’s signed a contract extension with the UFC:

Top welterweight contender Jon Fitch (15-2) has signed the bout agreement to fight Akihiro Gono (27-12-7) at UFC 82: “Pride of a Champion” on March 1 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, MMAmania.com (www.mmamania.com) just learned.

In addition, the American Kickboxing Academy standout has re-signed with the organization for another three bouts.

Considering where Fitch is at in the division right now, this is a tough fight for him. Karo Parisyan is talking about fighting someone who he can get an easy victory over to prepare for his title shot while Fitch is taking on quality, experienced competition from overseas. Some guys only want to fight the best guys. Others want to get by and do the bare minimum to get to the top. Karo and Fitch are on separate wavelengths when it comes to this matter.

It’s also good to hear that he’s signed on for another three fights in the UFC. Fitch is a very promising young talent and the UFC should do everything in their power to keep him right where he’s at.

Is Parisyan Afraid to Fight Fitch?

November 30, 2007 By: Paul Balsom Category: Jon Fitch, Karo Parisyan 19 Comments →

A recent interview with PunchDrunkGamer.com gives an interesting look into the mind of Karo Parisyan.

PDG: You’re in one of the most clustered divisions in the world right now. Georges St. Pierre and Matt Hughes are in the picture to challenge Matt Serra, and then you and Jon Fitch are right there. Do you think you could be facing Jon anytime soon while those other three sort things out?
Karo: People are talking about that, I don’t know. The deal is I think I already have a title shot if I want to wait. If I wait I can get my title shot I guess in six or seven months from now, which is a long time away, and I don’t want to mess up my plans of getting my title shot. Now I would love to fight Jon Fitch, but if I fight him and god forbid something goes wrong and I lose that fight it puts me all the way back down again and I have to work back up for a title fight. So if I am guaranteed a title fight now, I’ll take the title fight or if I don’t want to wait such a long time I’ll take another opponent who I have a more “guaranteed” win over. I still think I can beat Jon Fitch – Jon’s a very tough guy, but I think that if I am in shape that I can beat him eight out of ten times. But at this point I don’t want to jeopardize anything leading up to my title fight, so we’ll see what the UFC will offer and what I will take.

Parisyan has been talking for a long time about being “snubbed” by the UFC when he lost his chance at the UFC welterweight title due to injury. Now that he has the fight (that being with Jon Fitch to all but guarantee the winner a title shot, he doesn’t “want to jeopardize anything leading up to the title fight?” He seems to go back and forth on this idea in just this paragraph alone. I can’t help but believe, based on this interview, that Karo is threatened and possibly afraid by the thought of facing Fitch before he gets a shot at the title.

So far, there has been no confirmed news on whether anyone from the UFC has offered such a title shot to Parisyan. There is still a lot to sort out before we see anybody but Matt Serra, Hughes, or GSP in a UFC welterweight title fight.

Jon Fitch will not be available to fight Matt Hughes

November 24, 2007 By: Gary Herman Category: Jon Fitch, Matt Hughes 1 Comment →

To put an end to a recent rumor, Jon Fitch will not be Matt Serra’s replacement to fight Matt Hughes on Dec. 29.

In fact, according to MMA Mania, Fitch stated that he will not even be in the United States:

“I’m not going to be in the country. I’ll be in Vietnam tending to some personal matters.”

As Adam noted below, I definitely agree that there is little possibility Hughes risks fighting on the Dec. 29 show. The fight with with Serra is potentially a huge money-maker for Hughes, and it is a shot to regain the welterweight title. The UFC would also be foolish to put him in with a top fighter like Thiago Alves and risk blowing another main event match-up. A lot of time and money (not to mention this season of The Ultimate Fighter) has gone into building Hughes-Serra. I can’t see Hughes fighting in the near future if it is not against Matt Serra for the welterweight title (unless Serra is out for an extended period of time).

Report: Thiago Alves, Jon Fitch could replace Matt Serra at UFC 79

November 24, 2007 By: Adam Morgan Category: UFC 79, Jon Fitch, Thiago Alves 10 Comments →

That’s the word, according to Dave Meltzer:

According to a UFC official, if Serra is out for a long period of time and Hughes agrees to fight on Dec. 29, the two most likely candidates to for an opponent would be Jon Fitch or Thiago Alves. Josh Koscheck and Diego Sanchez are both coming off losses, and Sanchez has talked about cutting to 155.

A lot of unknowns have to happen here, so don’t expect anything to come of it. If Serra is out for a long period of time, I still don’t expect Hughes to fight on the December 29th card. Why would he risk his title shot?

Alves just fought a week ago, so I see Fitch being the most likely guy here if Hughes does, for some odd reason, decide to fight. Hughes vs. Fitch would be a very interesting matchup: old school vs. new school.

Parisyan reveals broken hand; welcomes bout vs. Fitch

November 23, 2007 By: Sam Caplan Category: UFC 78, Jon Fitch, Karo Parisyan, UFC 1 Comment →

Damon Martin from MMAWeekly.com was able to catch up with Karo Parisyan following his win last weekend against Ryo Chonan at UFC 78. It’s a very revealing interview that I recommend you check out.

During the interview, Parisyan responds to criticism about his performance during the unanimous decision victory. He talked about how he only had three weeks of intense training at Xtreme Couture due to the uncertainty of his opponent and that he also entered the fight with a broken hand:

“My right hand is broken,” Parisyan stated. “I fought with a broken hand, on top of my wrist, on top of my hand, right above my knuckles, and I fought with that.”

The fact that fellow welterweight title contender Jon Fitch has been calling Parisyan out was brought up. It’s a match that Parisyan would like to see happen as well:

“I’d love to fight Jon Fitch,” Parisyan said with much enthusiasm.

Outside of a possible match-up with Fitch, the 10x UFC veteran still awaits a shot at the title and is unsure of his next move.

“We’ll see what’s in store for me,” said Parisyan. “Fitch or a title shot or what else is next?”

UFC 82: Jon Fitch vs. Akihiro Gono?

November 20, 2007 By: Adam Morgan Category: UFC 82, Akihiro Gono, Jon Fitch, Karo Parisyan 6 Comments →

MMA Mania is reporting that Jon Fitch will be fighting on the UFC 82 pay per view card in Columbus, Ohio on March 1st, 2008:

MMAmania.com (www.mmamania.com) learned earlier this morning that welterweight contender Jon Fitch (15-2) has been approached about fighting Akihiro Gono (27-12-7) at UFC 82 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 1.

Fitch will fight on the card; however, Gono is not a lock to be his opponent at this time. Our sources indicate that the Fitch camp is working hard to line up a showdown with Karo Parisyan instead.

A fight with Akihiro Gono makes no sense for Fitch right now while a fight with Karo Parisyan makes all the sense in the world. While I think a matchup against Gono could be interesting, the welterweight division is best served by having Fitch and Parisyan battle it out to see who gets to face the winner of GSP vs. Hughes/Serra.

The presence of Fitch is a solid addition to the card either way, but I’d rather have him fight someone meaningful. While Gono is a solid fighter, he is nowhere near the top of the ladder at the welterweight division, so the fight is a lose-lose situation for Fitch.

Nick Diaz calls out Jon Fitch and Bill Goldberg in new interview

October 13, 2007 By: Sam Caplan Category: EliteXC, Jon Fitch, Nick Diaz 6 Comments →

In a new interview with Jesse Holland of UFCMania.com, Nick Diaz holds nothing back, as usual. When asked a question in regard to his fight from Sept. 15 against Mike Aina, Diaz even calls the commentators on the telecast into question, most notably Bill Goldberg:

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): Well the EliteXC commentators weren’t exactly helping your cause.

Nick Diaz: Man, fuck them. They were acting like they’re all buddies with me and the next day they stick it to me. They should be able to know and recognize what’s going on in there. You got (Bill) Goldberg in there and they’re acting like he’s this experienced fighter but who is he? Why isn’t there a fighter in the booth helping these guys? If you never fought an MMA match in your life how are you going to be able to know what you’re looking at? Not everything that goes on in the cage should be taken at face value but if you’re not a fighter you don’t recognize that stuff. That was ridiculous man these guys need to shut up and call it right.

And even though he just recently signed a long-term extension with EliteXC, Diaz still wants to get his hands on some UFC welterweights and is willing to call them “pussies” on the record if that’s what it takes to get a match:

Nick Diaz: Georges or Matt Hughes, who the hell is there? Fitch? My boy Jake choked him out already. I’m ready to start talking shit on these guys. What do I have to do to fight one of these guys or get the promoters to make it happen? Call these guys pussies? Fine. They’re all pussies. Fuck every single one of them.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): You don’t think Fitch is the real deal?

Nick Diaz: No, I don’t. I think I’m gonna slap him and after I slap him I’m gonna beat him. Give me a fight with Fitch, go ahead. The UFC doesn’t want me fighting them but I’ll be there even when they start falling off because I’m a long distance fighter not like these fragile guys who always get hurt in training. How the hell do you get hurt so much in training? Stop flipping tires and jacking up all these weights.

More UFC 76 video: Jardine, Griffin, and Fitch talk wins

September 27, 2007 By: Sam Caplan Category: Jon Fitch, UFC 76, Forrest Griffin, Diego Sanchez, Chuck Liddell, UFC No Comments →

Earlier this week MMAFighting.com made some post-UFC 76 video of Randy Couture available to us. Well, there’s even more video we can now post here legally, thanks to ESPN:

Here’s post-fight video of Jon Fitch, who doesn’t agree that his win over Diego Sanchez being a split decision. Diego also is on at the end and he accepts the loss:

Here’s video of Forrest Griffin talking about his win over Shogan via rear naked choke (btw, Forrest’s face looks jacked!):

Next is video of Chuck Liddell and Keith Jardine talking about their fight:

UFC 76: Post-show thoughts on Jardine and Griffin upsets and more

September 23, 2007 By: Sam Caplan Category: Thiago Tavares, Tyson Griffin, Lyoto Machida, Mauricio Rua, UFC 76, Kazuhiro Nakamura, Jay Hieron, Wanderlei Silva, Jon Fitch, Diego Sanchez, Chuck Liddell, Dana White, Randy Couture, Keith Jardine, Jason Miller, Forrest Griffin, UFC 26 Comments →

I don’t know where to begin.

But let’s begin with Liddell vs. Jardine:

Remember when I said they should have canceled the match? A lot of you said I was crazy. Remember when I said this was a legit main event caliber match? A lot of you said I was full of it. Well, I have to eat crow when I make bold picks like Koscheck over GSP that don’t pan out and I have to own up to it but there are a lot of you that need to own up to your reaction to my comments.

Liddell simply fought a poor tactical fight. I’m sure he prepared. He just didn’t prepare for Keith Jardine specifically. The fact that at this stage of the game he doesn’t know how to defend leg kicks is a joke. And did John Hackleman really tell Liddell not to worry about the kicks? Not only were they hurting Liddell’s mobility and limiting his punching power, Jardine was scoring points with them. Liddell wasn’t answering them and taking the points back. That’s one of the first things I learned in Muay Thai class: someone scores points on you, answer back and neutralize the scoring.

I’m a crappy wanna-be MMA fighter and even I can defend kicks better than Liddell. Did he check more than one kick? And the kicks became predictable. Why didn’t he try and catch some of those kicks and pull Jardine in close and pop him on the chin? Or even catch him and sweep him and put him on his back and ground and pound him?

It just seemed like Jardine really started to get confident in round two. He was inviting Liddell to walk into him and engage because he had the reach advantage and almost every time Liddell tried to advance Jardine greeted him with a left jab, a left hook, a teep, or a cut kick. I mean, who the hell throws a Muay Thai teep in an MMA match as much as Jardine did tonight? You don’t see teeps happen in MMA all too often because a fighter can catch them and put a guy on his ass. But since Liddell had no kick defense Jardine could do whatever he wanted.

Liddell lost the match because he had a crappy game plan. Plain and simple. Looking at my notes here, I scored every round 10-9 for Jardine. That’s right, I even felt Jardine won the first round.

And why was Wanderlei clapping after round two? He should have ran his ass down to cageside and screamed at Liddell to get his shit together because he was going to cost him millions. This match never should have happened. You know, Dana ripped Pride last year for blowing the Liddell vs. Silva match when Cro Cop “murdered the axe murderer” so what’s his explanation for this?

You know what? Fuck it. Dana, please book Chuck vs. Wanderlei for UFC 79 on Dec. 29 anyway. With a strong undercard with matches like Serra vs. Hughes and Penn vs. Stevenson, I think you can get away with it. To try and spot Wanderlei or Liddell with wins would risk further putting their careers into the abyss unless you want to give Liddell a total slam dunk and book him against someone like Alessio Sakara.

When I was on with Steve Cofield tonight on ESPN 920 in Vegas he made a point that it might not be fair to match Liddell vs. Silva up in December when Jardine and Griffin are more worthy of facing Wanderlei. Well, Steve is right but I’m just a hopeless fanboy who has been dying to see Silva vs. Liddell for five years now. The two aren’t getting any younger. To wait any longer would jeopardize us never having gotten to see the two fight. Really, you could match Jardine or Forrest Griffin up vs. Wanderlei but what happens if one of them beat him?

Let’s move onto Forrest Griffin vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua:

Sorry, but I am going to talk more smack. I’ve got some haters on the Junkie comments area who always rip me whenever I write an article and give me crap for my Koscheck vs. GSP prediction. Well, I told everyone that Griffin was going to make this a closer fight than most people were anticipating. Some of you agreed while others slagged on me. I got some pretty nasty e-mails based on my CBSSports.com preview of the fight. Well, where are you haters now? Man, I just wish I had had the balls to to man up and go all the way and predict the upset.

Forrest is just a smarter fighter now. He’s had good offensive boxing skills from day one and now he has good defensive boxing skills. He’s also not too shabby on the ground. Having a tactician like Randy Couture as your head trainer is invaluable. They had the perfect gameplan and they executed it perfectly.

Also, am I the only one sick of people using the different rules excuse for the reason why so many Pride fighters have struggled in the UFC? I’m all about what Rampage says in his belief that’s a fight is a fight. Are the rules different? Of course. Do some adjustments need to be made? Sure. But the difference between fighting in Pride and UFC is way overblown. People act like it’s two separate sports. It’s not like someone is crossing over from boxing to wrestling. It’s all MMA. I’ve fought in a ring and a cage and sure there are some differences but a fight is a fight.

Why do I think some Pride guys have struggled? Maybe the lifestyle change. How much time did Cro Cop and Shogun spend in Japan before their fights? It was a long ass commute so they pretty much hunkered down at their respective camps in Croatia and Brazil. Then they come to the U.S. and the expectations are different. Cro Cop doesn’t spend much time stateside but he seemed a bit thrown off by the media coverage and the fan response. In Japan, he could kind of do whatever he wanted and wasn’t under constant scrutiny and there was less pressure. Was Sakikabara ever critical of his performances like Dana has been at times?

As for Shogun, we saw his brother gas out vs. Robbie Lawler last Saturday and we saw him gas tonight vs. Forrest. The Ruas claim they are still with Chute Boxe but from what I hear they are spending a lot of time in LA. Maybe too much time.

Also, what the hell is Shogun doing getting married two weeks before his UFC debut? Maybe I’m talking out of my ass here because for all I know is he could have trained the morning of his wedding, had the ceremony, and then trained later that night. Somehow I doubt that though. If I got married to a Victoria’s Secret model I don’t think I’d be spending my wedding night in the gym.

Jon Fitch vs. Diego Sanchez:

This match went exactly how I and a lot of other people expected. I just muffed the prediction. Sanchez was the better grappler but Fitch was the better wrestler. We all knew this. Diego tried to catch Fitch in submissions but couldn’t seal the deal. Fitch was the stronger fighter and his strength is deceptive in my opinion. He was really able to control Diego most of the match.

I don’t think there are any excuses for Diego though. I believe the change in camp helped. I believe he wasn’t lying to me when he said he had given up the party lifestyle and was refocused. We saw the old warrior spirit from Diego right out of the gate when he bum rushed Fitch as soon as the match started. He wasn’t the same guy who fought Koscheck. Diego simply got beat by a better fighter. Fitch is the real deal and is the third best welterweight fighter in the UFC right now behind GSP and Matt Hughes. If you disagree, you’re entitled to your opinion but your opinion is wrong.

Sanchez may have made a tactical error though. Despite being the better submission guy, maybe exerting so much energy trying to take Fitch down wasn’t a great idea in hindsight. I think maybe he should have tried to keep the fight on the feet more and work the standup. If Fitch has a weakness, it’s his standup so why not make that the area that you’re going to attack? Perhaps Diego could have stolen a round or two.

I had this fight 10-9, 10-9, 10-9 for Fitch. The third round was a little closer than the first two but Fitch really controlled Sanchez on the ground even though he didn’t do a lot of damage. I’m pretty sure the scoring will come into question here for this one. My take is that yes, Fitch didn’t do a lot of damage and Diego had more submission attempts. But Fitch controlled the majority of the match and how much damage did Diego do with his submissions when Fitch kept getting out of trouble? Doesn’t he deserve some points for submission defense? How many points should you get for a submission attempt if your opponent neutralizes it?

I think the best thing for Sanchez might be a move back to headlining UFC Fight Nights for now and let him work his way back to PPV since he’s coming off two losses.

Lyoto Machida vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura:

I’d like to issue a public apology to Spike TV.

A few months back I ripped Spike for promoting a Machida match and then editing it off the telecast. Now I know why you guys did it and I just wanted to say thanks.

Look, Machida is a hell of a fighter and he belongs in the UFC based on the merit of his abilities. But that doesn’t mean it still isn’t painful to watch the guy fight.

Can I be real with you all for a second without you guys jumping down my throat?

I actually nodded out during the last two minutes of round three and missed the entire Sanchez vs. Fitch fight. Luckily, I magically woke up right before Forrest vs. Shogun. And I was also luckily able to find a copy of the Diego vs. Fitch fight online so I could watch it and be able to comment on it.

Seriously, who needs Ambien when you have Machida? Doctors should prescribe DVDs of his matches to their patients who suffer from insomnia.

I feel bad for making those smart ass comments about the guy because I wish I could be a quarter of the fighter he is and I definitely believe he deserves to be in the UFC. I just have no desire to watch him.

Oh yeah, remember when I said on Luke Thomas’ “Any Given Saturday” show this week that they should move Machida to 185 lbs.? Can we forget I said that? Because what’s the point? He could cut to 185 and he’s still going to be boring. He could cut to featherweight and he’d still be boring. He’s just is who he is and he has an effective fighting style that just doesn’t happen to be crowd pleasing to most people.

The issue is that the UFC will never let him touch one of their elite fighters because there’s a good chance he might beat one of them and then what do you do with him? If you allow him to elevate himself into high-profile matches you’re going to see a very boring guy hurt the credibility of marketable fighters.

BTW, I gave all three rounds to Machida 10-9.

Thiago Tavares vs. Tyson Griffin:

Normally I am a big defender of Mike Goldberg but when he suggested Griffin should take the fight to the ground, I cringed. I think he’s a strong announcer who gets a bad wrap. I just think instead of making statements he should phrase more questions to Joe Rogan. He already defers to Rogan a lot, but I’m saying he should do it even more. Maybe not as much as Todd Harris of the WEC in what he does with Frank Mir, but I think you get the drift.

Speaking of the WEC, this reminded me of a WEC match. Frenetic ground fighting with a lot of transitions and momentum changes.

Both Tavares and Griffin are tremendous fighters and this easily deserved match of the night honors. All Tyson Griffin, Spencer Fisher, and Clay Guida do is put on great fights. These guys should be rock stars and I hope Dana is hooking them all up with nice bonuses.

I really liked the spot where Griffin flipped Tavares off his back and into side control and then there was another awesome transition in round 3. The live crowd reacted to it really nicely. See, I think MMA fans do appreciate ground fighting — so long as there is action. Fans boo the standup too sometimes if guys aren’t doing anything. It’s not a ground vs. standup issue. It’s an action vs. inaction issue.

One other thing I liked was the corner audio for this fight. They had some audio for a few of the other fights but it was not mic’d properly. I love how HBO gets the between round audio for boxing and I think all MMA shows need to follow suit. It gives you insight into adjustments that might be made and you can kind of tell who has a strong corner and who doesn’t. To be honest, I think you or I could give better strategic advice then some of these corners in MMA. But it seemed like Griffin’s corner did a good job. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have Randy Couture as one of your corner guys but I was more impressed with what Jay Hieron was saying.

I scored the fight 10-9 Griffin in the first, 9-10 Tavares in the second, and 10-9 Griffin in the third.

General Comments:

On a scale of 1-10, I give this show a nine. Did I want to see Shogun and Liddell win? Yeah. But the fights were both good and I enjoyed the drama of the upsets. Especially Griffin’s reaction after the fight. I also will always have a lasting memory of Liddell slouching down against the cage in disbelief after the decision was announced. Did anyone else see that too?

Bottom line, I thoroughly enjoyed this show and felt I got more than my money’s worth.

I also loved Mayhem clowning it up whenever they cut to Wanderlei. Does that dude know how to market himself or what? You know Zuffa couldn’t have been happy with that. He’s got one fight left on his WEC contract and if they don’t sign him to a UFC deal my prediction is that he’ll make his way to EliteXC. Hell, he’s already at their offices whenever he does stuff for ProElite.com. I know for a fact that Zuffa is really unhappy about that but Mayhem has got to pay the bills. Pro Elite is trying to make this guy a star and they don’t even have him under contract. Why isn’t Zuffa doing the same thing when they are the ones who have him?

A couple of other notes:

What was Dave Doyle doing working security tonight inside the Octagon tonight? I’m just kidding. But that dude was a ringer for Dave.

I should have some audio here later of an appearance I did with Steve Cofield on ESPN 920 in Las Vegas (weird, I was on ESPN 920 in Philadelphia this morning and then another ESPN 920 in Vegas at night… but I guess most of you could care less about that useless bit of info. I was pretty heated.

Tomorrow I’m going to start a new column called “What’s Next.” Basically, I am going to analyze the repercussions of the outcome of all the fights last night and give my thoughts on where I think each fighter should go from here.

Also, please remember to keep checking back for the Inside the Cage Radio show that we taped earlier today with Kenny Florian, Ricco Rodriguez, and Joe Riggs. I can’t say enough about how awesome the show went.

Please feel free to leave all your post UFC 76 comments here and be sure to praise me for saying that Liddell vs. Jardine is a fight that never should have happened.
