The bout will be a welterweight tournament qualifier for season six.

Bellator officials confirmed the bout earlier today.

Good was originally scheduled to fight Dan Hornbuckle earlier this year but had to pull out of the fight due to a hamstring injury. He last competed at Bellator 39, losing a close split decision to Rick Hawn in the semifinals of the season 4 welterweight tournament. After going undefeated in his first 10 professional fights and winning the Bellator welterweight title, Good has lost two of his last three bouts. Along with the loss to Hawn, he dropped a decision and the title to current champion Ben Askren before rebounding with a win over Chris Lozano.

Costa will be making his Bellator debut when he steps into the cage to face Good in late November. A black belt under Royler Gracie, Costa has won 10 professional fights, finishing nine of his opponents. He currently trains at Wand Fight Team in Las Vegas with MMA legend Wanderlei Silva.

Bellator 59 is scheduled for November 26 at Caesars Atlantic City in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The event will be headlined by the season five bantamweight tournament final between Alexis Vila and Eduardo Dantas.

Bellator veterans Dan Hornbuckle (22-4) and Lyman Good (11-2) will finally face off next month at Bellator 44 after mutually successful runs in the promotion’s previous welterweight tournaments never quite led to a pairing in the cage. In addition to the standard pressure a bout brings the match-up will also serve as an eliminator for participation in next year’s 170-pound field.

“Good vs. Hornbuckle is a fight a lot of MMA fans, myself included, have wanted to see for quite some time,” said Bellator head Bjorn Rebney in a press release on the upcoming fight. “These two guys have Bellator in their blood, and on May 14 one will move into our next tournament and one will go home.”

Both Good and Hornbuckle are coming off losses in this season’s welterweight tournament with the former falling to finalist Rick Hawn by Split Decision and the latter suffering a surprise outpointing at the hands of Brent Weedman. It’s a performance Hornbuckle has vowed to avoid a repetition of even if an undisclosed illness affected his training for the quarter-final fight.

“There’s no excuse for my loss to Weedman,” he explained. “It’s my fault for not pulling the trigger. I can only be mad at myself for not taking the opportunity to finish the fight. No more of that. This fight with Lyman, the proof will be in the pudding – mark my words. Just watch, as soon as that bell rings, I’m going to be sprinting dead at him and I’m going to put my knee dead in his face.”

Bellator 44 is set for May 14 in Atlantic City at Caesar’s and will feature a superfight between middleweight champion Hector Lombard and Falaniko Vitale as well as the Season 4 Lightweight Tournament final between Patricky Freire and Michael Chandler.

Good’s involvement in this March’s tournament was officially announced today in a press release from Bellator.

“Being able to fight [Ben] Askren again was one of the biggest factors behind me entering this tournament. I can’t walk away from an opportunity to avenge a loss to a person that I know deep down – with the proper amount of preparation – I can beat,” said Good. “But right now there are three bodies I’m going to have to get through before I focus on somebody that’s walking around with something that belongs to me.”

Other individuals slated for action in the tournament include Dan Hornbuckle, Rick Hawn, Brent Weedman, and Chris “The Assassin” Lozano.

“At just 25-years-old, Lyman has the talent, potential and the heart to climb back up the Bellator welterweight ladder and recapture the Title,” said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. “However, he’s going to have to go through one of the most stacked welterweight tournaments in the history of the sport to do it.”

Good’s loss to Askren was the first of his career. He holds a 10-1 record with five TKOs to his credit.

The two maintained a frenzied pace for two full rounds featuring Alvarez getting the better of the stand-up exchanges, save for a single instance when he was dropped by a well-timed punch in the first. However, Huerta was unable to continue in the third frame after absorbing a number of powerful leg-kicks from Bellator’s 155-pound champion including one in the second stanza that dropped him to the canvas for a split-second.

The win brings Alvarez’s record to 21-2 and marked his fifth consecutive victory since being submitted by Shinya Aoki two years ago. The performance also delivered the first TKO of Huerta’s 27-fight career.

“El Matador” has now fallen in defeat four of the last five times he’s stepped into the ring after only losing once in his first twenty-two fights.

The promotion also crowned a new champion in the form of Ben Askren at the event. Askren dominated previous title-holder Lyman Good for the bulk of their five-round fight with takedowns and top control, though he was nearly caught in a Triangle/Armbar combination after suffering a swift upkick from Good.

Here is a complete rundown of Bellator 33 results:

Kenny Foster def. Lester Caslow via Unanimous Decision
Luiz Azeredo def. Edward Guedes via Unanimous Decision
Fran Evans def. Lewis Cassner via Submission Round 1 (Triangle Choke)
Nick Cottone def. Tuan Pham via Unanimous Decision
Wilson Reis def. Deividas Taurosevicius via Split Decision
Rick Hawn def. LeVon Maynard via TKO Round 1
Ben Askren def. Lyman Good via Unanimous Decision
Eddie Alvarez def. Roger Huerta via TKO Round 2 (Doctor’s Stoppage)

Season Two tournament winner Ben Askren will fight current Bellator 170-pound champion Lyman Good on at Bellator 33 on October 21st in Philadelphia according to a post on the former Olympian’s Twitter account.

In addition to confirming the fight, he also sent a clear message to Good, saying, “Kansas city, Philly, or your back yard, it does not matter to me where we fight I am still taking your belt.”

Askren earned his crack at Good’s title after beating Dan Hornbuckle this past June at Bellator 22 and walking away the promotion’s second welterweight tournament champ (Good being the first). The 26-year old is 6-0 in his career and will face a fellow undefeated fighter in the form of his opposition this October.

Bellator 33 will mark Good’s return to the ring after nearly a year-long layoff from action. The 10-0 New Yorker has not fought since winning the Bellator welterweight strap by defeating Omar de la Cruz via TKO a little over ninety seconds into their bout at Bellator 11 in June 2009.

In addition to Good’s title defense against Askren, Bellator 33 will also feature the much-anticipated clash between top lightweights Roger Huerta and Eddie Alvarez, a slew of talented local fighters, and a few yet-to-be-named main card match-ups.

Rich “Ace” Franklin (24-3) has enjoyed one of the most prosperous MMA careers in the sports young history. He is a former UFC middleweight champion and has only tasted defeated three times in his career, at the hands of the undefeated Lyoto Machida and the best pound-for-pound fighter Anderson Silva (twice).

Silva has dominated the middleweight division in the UFC since defeating Franklin at UFC 64 for the middleweight title, defeating anyone that has challenged him, including Franklin again at UFC 77. So rather than attempt to fight Silva for a third time, Franklin decided to move to light heavyweight to start another run at a title. It looked like Silva would no longer impede Franklin’s path to glory.

It’s rather cliché to say, “life comes full circle” or “that many roads have the same destination” but it applies to Franklin. His first fighter against a light heavyweight title contender is against Dan Henderson, but there’s a catch. The winner will coach the next season of The Ultimate Fighter opposite Michael Bisping. At the conclusion of the show they will face off at middleweight with the winner getting a title shot against…Silva.

Franklin now finds himself between a rock and Anderson Silva. He’s stated that he would rather not coach a second season of TUF, and he would also prefer not to face Silva for a third time, as he was never really in the fights the first two go-rounds. Yet if that is what’s laid before him then he’ll do anything and everything to win. And losing to Henderson isn’t an option as it would cause him to get lost in the shuffle at 205.

Going into the fight with Henderson one would have to wonder what Franklin’s mindset is. He left his comfort zone at middleweight to avoid one person, so is he prepared to travel down the road that leads to Silva again. It’s said that “the third times a charm” but does that hold true when battling your archenemy?

It could come down to a nearly unstoppable force clashing with an immovable object for their final showdown. Silva has said he plans to retire in about years time from now. By the time this potential fight with Franklin would happen, it could mark the end of Silva’s career. How fitting would it be for Franklin to be the final test of Silva’s career, where things would come full circle for both men.

One thing is for sure, Franklin is and always has been a warrior in the cage. Any challenge thrown his way he has overcome, with very few exceptions. Now as another road to a title is paved before him can he final exercise the demon known as “The Spider” from his life and recapture the title he lost back in 2006?

Although Franklin has yet to take the first step on this journey, and for all we know the dream may all fall apart before it really begins, but to watch him battle his way back to the top is a compelling story fit for the silver screen of Hollywood. The dream could start with Franklin defeating Henderson at UFC 93, and if he does it will offer fans a storyline like none other in 2009, as Franklin once again looks to be called a champion in the UFC.

Shawn Tompkins is one of the foremost authorities in MMA on the art of striking and thanks to Jake Hattan, one of his managers at Denaro Sports Marketing, FiveOuncesOfPain.com was recently granted an opportunity to interview the Xtreme Couture striking specialist.

In Part I of our interview, Tompkins discussed the preparations he’s current making in getting four fighters ready for Affliction’s “Day of Reckoning” on Jan. 24; his thoughts on whether Vitor Belfort has enough left to make a run a major middleweight title; and his feelings about famed boxing trainer Freddie Roach’s assessment of Fedor Emelianenko’s striking.

Sam Caplan (FiveOuncesOfPain.com): You’re a pretty busy many these days as you are helping multiple fighters get ready for Affliction’s “Day of Reckoning” on January 24. Can you talk a little more about that?

Shawn Tompkins: I’m in the middle of one of my biggest training camps that I have ever had to date. I’ve got Mark Hominick, Chris Horodecki, Jay Hieron, and Vitor Belfort all preparing for big fights on January 24 for the Affliction card. We’re full steam ahead and we’ve got about three weeks left as of today. It’s all going good and everyone is healthy, which is the key.

Sam Caplan (FiveOuncesOfPain.com): Belfort is such an interesting case. He’s had so many ups and downs in his career and is a former UFC light heavyweight champion. He comes out of Brazil and trained there for years and I wanted to know how you came about working with him?

Shawn Tompkins: Vitor wanted to come out originally to work with Randy Couture because Vitor has really turned to religion and he really respected the way Randy carried himself as a human being.

Ultimately, that’s what made him decide to come to Las Vegas. At the time I was working with Wanderlei Silva and a couple of other Brazilians that I was starting out with as well and my success as an MMA coach got back to him. He had his management connect with me and we worked together for a couple of days and see if it would go together. We’ve worked great together ever since.

Sam Caplan (FiveOuncesOfPain.com): Vitor has made the move to 185 and he’s still in his early 30s. However, he’s been in so many wars over the years that he might be old for his age and I wanted to ask if you felt if he has enough left in him to make a run at a middleweight title?

Shawn Tompkins: Absolutely. And I’ve been telling people this since the last Affliction card where everyone has been like “Wow, the old Vitor is back.” I truly believe that it’s not the old Vitor and it’s a brand new Vitor that is more determined and more motivated. I think the 185 pound division causes him to have to work harder between fights and maintain.

It’s also been a long time since Vitor has had a real team behind him. I think where Vitor went well in the past is that after he had some success — and this has happened many times with other fighters — he surrounded himself with people that just say “You’re the greatest! Everything you do is perfect! You’re good — you’re good” and they don’t push him. And they don’t set it up and he has to come into the gym and do what he has to do rather than what he wants to do. I think he’s really matured and changed in that way.

As far as his body holding up, he’s a physical specimen. He doesn’t carry his age through any of the wars that he’s had. Sure, he’s had some tough fights but I don’t think he’s had any wars that will feed on him later in his career.

Sam Caplan (FiveOuncesOfPain.com): You mentioned Chris Horodecki at the top of the interview and he” be fighting Dan Lauzon on Jan. 24. He’s come out and promised a surprise for Lauzon and while I know you can’t give the surprise away, can you give us a hint as to what we can expect?

Shawn Tompkins: What people are going to see ultimately is a more well-rounded Chris Horodecki. He gained a huge fanbase during his IFL days but I was really doing Bas Rutten a favor by putting Chris Horodecki in there at such a young age. Obviously, it worked very well for Bas and I and Chris. But now since April we’ve had some time to really just sit down and focus more on his training and career and round him out more so that he’s not just a kickboxer.

He’s a great kickboxer but we really spent a lot of time on improving his ground game as far as his jiu-jitsu and his wrestling. If anybody looks at Dan Lauzon, that’s his strength. I think we’re doing a really good job with our training of Horodecki. He’s a great kid and he’s a single-minded person. He knows what he’s good at and he knows what he needs to get better at.

Sam Caplan (FiveOuncesOfPain.com): Horodecki is one of the best fighters in the world under the age of 22, yet he’s got several years of experience. How young was he when he came to you?

Shawn Tompkins: Chris and I started working together when he was 12 years old. I tell people this a lot, and he does too, we’ve got a real father/son relationship. We’ve won together and we’ve lost together. So there’s nothing we haven’t seen and we both know that there’s a lot of room for improvement and I’m always very excited in his fight camp when I put them together because I take them very personal and I always like to see him improve.

Sam Caplan (FiveOuncesOfPain.com): The main event on that card is Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski and famed boxing trainer Freddie Roach recently broke down Fedor’s striking in an interview with SI.com. He specifically talked about how Fedor strikes from a flat footed position and he also indicated that he felt his aggressive nature could be used against him. What is your assessment of Fedor as a striker and do you agree with what Roach said?

Shawn Tompkins: First of all, I respect Freddie Roach more than any other trainer in the business and that’s in boxing and martial arts. When he says something it’s generally gold. But I will go against him in a way where he says Fedor’s punching isn’t technical and that it isn’t good because obviously, he’s the greatest. There are some cases with certain people that when everything they do wrong turns out right and that’s what you have in Fedor.

As far as an aggressive nature with Arlovski, I think that’s a positive for Fedor. If you look at the past with Arlovski, when he doesn’t do well is when he gets hit and gets hurt and that’s when Arlovski falls a part. He’s a very confidence-driven fighter. He needs to be winning in order to do well and look good.

I just can’t see Arlovski winning the fight. I think it’s a really bad fight for him but I think it’s a fight that he has to do. Best of luck to him, obviously, and I think Freddie Roach is a great trainer and I have respect for him at the upmost but I just don’t think he understands Fedor like the rest of us in the MMA game do.

Affliction Entertainment has added a light heavyweight bout between Renato “Babalu” Sobral and former UFC and PRIDE star Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou to its “Day of Reckoning” event set for Jan. 24.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com spoke with Sokoudjou on Friday during the weigh-ins for the eighth season of The Ultimate Fighter, where he stated that he had signed the bout agreement to face Sobral and that the matchup is now official.

Reports of the bout surfaced earlier this week after Affliction prematurely released promotional materials to its website signifying the addition of the bout. However, Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio informed MMAjunkie.com that while the fight was under discussion, that Sokoudjou had not formally signed.

Sobral, 31-7, last competed on November 21 during a Strikeforce event in San Jose, California. Facing the promotion’s then-incumbent light heavyweight champion Bobby Southworth, Sobral claimed his first major title following a TKO at the conclusion of the first round.

Prior to arriving in Strikeforce, Sobral had competed in the UFC, where he recorded notable victories over Chael Sonnen, Travis Wiuff, and Mike Van Arsdale. He was dismmised from the promotion following a second round submission victory over David Heath at UFC 74 for refusing to immediately release a choke.

Sokoudjou rose to stardom falling a pair of upset victories against top ten ranked light heavyweights during bis brief PRIDE tenure. Despite facing long odds heading into his bout at PRIDE 33 vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Sokoudjou managed to upset the native Brazilian with a knockout just 23 seconds into the bout.

The Cameroon native returned a couple of months later at PRIDE 34 in April of the same year and was matched up against another renowned Brazilian light heavyweight in Ricardo Arona. Despite his win over Nogueira, Sokoudjou was still pegged as the underdog. However, lightning struck twice with Sokoudjou knocking out Arona at 1:59 into the first round.

Sokoudjou eventually migrated to the UFC after Dream Stage Entertainment sold PRIDE to Zuffa. However, Sokoudjou’s tenure in the UFC was less than memorable and he was released following an October loss to Luis Cane at UFC 90.

In addition to the possibility of Sobral vs. Sokoudjou, “Day of Reckoning” is also slated to feature Fedor Emelianenko defending his WAMMA heavyweight title vs. former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski. Additional matchups include Matt Lindland vs. Vitor Belfort and Josh Barnett vs. Gilbert Yvel.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com learned of the news on Friday morning following an e-mail to his manager, Michael Sachs.

In August, Five Ounces of Pain was the first to report that Good was on the verge of signing a six fight contract with EliteXC with a planned debut against Paul Daley for an event that had been scheduled to take place in Albuquerque, New Mexico. However, the Albuquerque event would go on to be canceled and Good never formally executed the contract with ProElite, meaning that he remained a free agent eligible to sign with another promotion. Good was so close to signing with EliteXC that he was scratched from a previously scheduled Sept. 12 fight in Atlantic City.

Good, 7-0 in his pro career, is a full-time instructor at several of Tiger Schulmann’s local mixed martial arts academies across the East Coast region. He began his professional MMA career competing for Lou Neglia’s Ring of Combat promotion in Atlantic City, N.J.

He earned his first notable victory against Eric Charles during ROC 14 on April 27, 2007. Charles, who was one of 32 fighters invited to Las Vegas to fight for a final spot during the seventh season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” lost via TKO as a result of a doctor’s stoppage at 4:00 of round 1.

Following the Charles fight, Good defeated Doug Gordon via unanimous decision during a Cage Fury Fighting Championship event on June 23, 2007. He then made his debut for a major national promotion taking on Mike Dolce on the undercard of the IFL’s team semifinals last August. Good defeated Dolce, an official cast member of TUF 7, via unanimous decision.

A former ROC welterweight champion, Good is expected to be involved with Bellator’s eight-man welterweight tournament that could commence as early as April.

A noted striker, he is also a veteran of Chuck Norris’ World Combat League.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com has learned that one new fighter about to sign with the promotion is undefeated welterweight prospect Lyman Good of Team Tiger Schulmann’s in New Jersey.

Officials with Team Tiger Schulmann contacted FiveOuncesOfPain.com to inform us that Good has been offered a six fight contract by EliteXC and is expected to sign it by week’s end.

Good, 7-0, according to Sherdog’s fight finder, is expected to make his debut for the promotion on Sept. 20 at “The Pit” in Albuquerque, N.M. The proposed opponent for his debut is UK Muay Thai specialist Paul “Semtex” Daley. While EliteXC has yet to announce the bout officially, Daley gave strong hints that Good would be his opponent during a recent interview with MMAWeekly.com.

Good, a full-time instructor at several of Tiger Schulmann’s local mixed martial arts academies across the East Coast region, began his professional MMA career competing for Lou Neglia’s Ring of Combat promotion in Atlantic City, N.J.

Good defeated Dolce, an official cast member of TUF 7, via unanimous decision.

Good’s most recent fight was unanimous decision victory over Alexis Aquino at ROC 18 this past March. He had been scheduled to defend his Ring of Combat welterweight title against John Howard in the main event of ROC 21 on Sept. 12 but Team Tiger Schulmann officials have informed us that he’s been pulled off the card.

A noted striker, Good is also a veteran of Chuck Norris’ World Combat League.

The event will be televised on SHOWTIME.

“I will be fighting Sept. 20 in New Mexico, most likely against an undefeated ex-IFL fighter who cannot be named yet,” Daley is quoted as telling MMA Weekly. “I’m really looking forward to it.”

While FiveOuncesOfPain.com has yet to receive official confirmation, we have strong reason to believe that the fighter best fitting Daley’s description is top-level East Coast welterweight prospect Lyman Good.

Good trains out of Tiger Schulmann’s MMA and is a perfect 7-0, according to Sherdog’s fight finder. He competed for the IFL during the undercard of its team semifinals in August of 2007, defeating Mike Dolce from the seventh season of “The Ultimate Fighter” via unanimous decision.

However, it should be noted that as this article went to press, Good was not under contract to ProElite.

Soon after defeating Sammy Morgan during a ShoXC event on Jan. 25, Daley abruptly announced his retirement and stated his intention of fighting one final bout. He had been tentatively scheduled to fight during the undercard of Strikeforce and EliteXC’s co-promotion on March 29 that featured Cung Le vs. Frank Shamrock, but Daley was pulled off the card following his retirement proclamation.

Daley had held titles with Cage Rage, FX-3, and King of the Ring but relinquished all of them at the time of his retirement. However, his retirement was short-lived and he recently returned during a Cage Warriors card on July 12, where he knocked out Bojan Kosednar at 4:53 of round 1.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com broke its own single day record for page views on Sunday, July 20.

Thanks in large part to the interest created by dueling MMA fight cards this past Saturday between Affliction and the UFC, 5 Oz. of Pain received the most amount of viewed pages since the site’s inception.

Our previous single-day record was set on June 1, the day after EliteXC’s debut on CBS.

A large part of our traffic was received through Google searches, and as such, we’d like to give a special welcome to all of our new readers. This is your site for insider MMA news and opinion. We’re a site that is not only widely read by fight fans, but also by promoters, fight executives, managers, state athletic commission officials, and the fighters.

We also want to thank all of our existing readers for their continued support. We still have spent no money on marketing yet our reach continues to grow. We realize that a large part of our growth can be attributed to word of mouth advertising. Please continue to tell your family and friends that you “read it on 5 Oz.!”

And of course, we can’t forget our sponsors: Triggonomics and Ranger Up!

We continue to grow but we aren’t even close to reaching our peak. We have a lot of big things planned for the future. Stay tuned!
