5 Oz. of Pain on CBS Sports: Forecasting the future of the UFC Light Heavyweight division
My latest submission for CBSSports.com is now available. This week I take a look at the current status of the UFC’s talent-laden light heavyweight division and give my analysis on what I think is next for most of the division’s top fighters. Click here to fight out what I think is next for Chuck Liddell, Forrest Griffin, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Wanderlei Silva, and others. I... [Read More...]
Arkansas MMA fans receive quite the surprise
The Fort Smith Convention Center in Arkansas signed a promotional contract with a group to put on several mixed martial arts bouts at its venue in June. It appears that convention officials and local MMA fans may have gotten a little more than they bargained for. According to a new report just published by the Association Press, it looks like someone may have pulled a fast one on the convention center... [Read More...]
Random Ranting: How to fix the judging and rule making process in MMA
I don’t think the result of the Forrest Griffin vs. Quinton Jackson fight is cause to condemn the current judging system that currently exists in mixed martial arts. Not everyone is going to see the fight the same way. As I said before, I can live with the decision that was rendered and don’t have a problem with people who believe Griffin won the fight. I scored the fight on my own, as... [Read More...]
5 Oz. of Pain on CBS Sports: IFL’s impact greater than some realize
In my weekly article for CBSSports.com, this week I decided to take a look at all the former IFL talent that has migrated into the UFC. Between Mike Dolce, Gerald Harris, and Dante Rivera on TUF 7; from Rory Markham, Brad Blackburn, and Reese Andy on the card for UFN 14; and Andre Gusmao debuting at UFC 87, the UFC has done some pretty big reaching into the IFL well. Despite all the former IFL talent... [Read More...]
Delaware considering a ban on MMA
While many states have decided to legalize the sport of mixed martial arts through regulation, it appears the state of Delaware is employing some backwards thinking by considering approval of a bill that would ban MMA. According to an article by Alexander Pyles of The News Journal, state Rep. Robert J. Valihura Jr., has introduced legislation that would ban “combative fighting” in Delaware. The... [Read More...]

As such, we are extremely excited about our recent growth because a great deal of... [Read More...]

5 Oz. of Pain’s Fantasy MMA Mock Draft: Fantasy Matchmaking SAMMA’s First Card
Below is one of the first — if not the first — mock fight cards to result from 5 Oz. of Pain’s first-ever “MMA Fantasy Mock Draft.” Some of the matchups you see below may appear to be far-fetched, but keep in mind that what we did was a “fantasy” draft. So yes, some of us took some liberties. Another liberty I took was to go against Mike Huckaby’s mandate... [Read More...]
Five Ounces of Pain’s MMA Mock Draft: Free Agency

You will then state who you believe has the best up and down card. Free agency was conducted by a random draw and then each person got two picks at a time, snaking up and down for four rounds.... State of 5 Oz. Address
When I first started this blog, I violated the basic rule of journalism and interjected myself into every post. After all, it was just some random blog about MMA that I had started that was being read by, like, 10 people? As this thing grew, I began to write in the first person less and less. The nature of posts changed as I felt it was necessary to increase the professionalism of the voice and tone... [Read More...]

5 Oz. of Pain on CBS Sports: Defending Mir and Nogueira as coaching choices for TUF 8
In my article for CBSSports.com this week, I analyze the UFC and Spike TV’s decision to go with UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir as coaches for the eighth season of “The Ultimate Fighter“, which starts in September. Many people on the blogosphere have been critical of the news, but I can find little fault with... [Read More...]
