It was not announced where the Guillard-Camoes bout would be placed on the July 7 card, but a spot on the prelims is likely. UFC 148 already features a bantamweight title-match between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber, along with fights such as Michael Bisping-Tim Boetsch, Rich Franklin-Cung Le, and Tito Ortiz-Forrest Griffin.

MMAWeekly was first to report the match-up.

Guillard (29-10-2) was making his way up the UFC’s lightweight ladder before running into back-to-back submission defeats at the limbs of Joe Lauzon and Jim Miller. Now, the heavy-handed fighter will look to avoid the dreaded three-fight losing streak this summer

Camoes (14-6-1) is in his second stint with the UFC, having defeated Tommy Hayden earlier this year. “Morango” has won three straight since a loss to Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 111 and owes half of his total victories to tapping opponents out.

The 28-year old slugger had won five straight fights and was poised to earn a title-shot with a win over Joe Lauzon at UFC 136, a match-up most labeled as being his to lose as long as he could keep Lauzon from taking him down. However, when things were said and done, it was Lauzon who landed a knee-knocking strike rather than power-puncher Guillard. Shortly thereafter the fight was over and Guillard was back at the drawing board.

In less than a minute Guillard learned a valuable lesson and one he will carry with him into tomorrow night’s headlining fight at UFC on FX when he faces Jim Miller, also an apt grappler with decent striking similarly to Lauzon. “The Young Assassin” spoke some about his upcoming bout, saying he has no intention of repeating his performance from the Lauzon loss.

“What happened last time was a mistake,” Guillard explained in a press release promoting the show. “I rushed in so hard and fast I was stunned with a jab and from there I lost the fight. It was kinda dumb, but I am young enough to learn as long as realize the mistake. I made the mistake, it didn’t just happen, I know that but I also know I’m still one of the best fighters in the division.”

To help erase the memories of fans with the October loss firmly implanted in their minds Guillard made it clear he’ll still be looking for a finish against Miller – it just won’t come as the result of throwing caution to the wind and going all-out right off the bat.

“I am looking at making a statement on FX against another top guy in the division. He’s one of the best fighters in the world at this weight and it is a great main event,” Guillard continued before adding, “I won’t be reckless, but you will see what I can do on FX Friday night. You will see the Young Assassin!”

Guillard holds an overall record of 29-9-2 with nineteen TKOs including past wins over Shane Roller, Evan Dunham, and Dennis Siver. Other bouts at UFC on FX: Guillard vs. Miller include Josh Neer vs. Duane Ludwig and Christian Morecraft vs. Pat Barry.

UFC on FX 1 is rumored to be going down January 20 from Nashville, Tennessee. It will be the first of several live cards scheduled for FX as part of the new UFC-FOX Network television deal.

Miller and Guillard were right near the top of the UFC 155-pound division rankings, however, both men suffered tough losses this past year. Miller was stopped by Ben Henderson via decision in August, while Guillard suffered an opening round submission defeat to Joe Lauzon at UFC 136.

This marks the third fight scheduled for UFC on FX, as Pat Barry vs. Christian Morecraft and Josh Neer vs. Duane Ludwig were announced earlier for the card.

Guillard will try to do just that against Joe Lauzon this Saturday night at UFC 136, live on PPV.

“The Young Assassin” has won five straight fights to improve to 29-8 in his career. He has stopped both Shane Roller and Evan Dunham by knockout this year, putting himself in position to become a top contender to the UFC title. Of those 29 wins, nineteen have come via some form of knockout/TKO.

“That’s my main goal – to break a guy’s will. I know physically, I’m always going to be the better athlete. It’s rare they are going to find a better athlete than me at 155, but I think working with Greg Jackson, the team, and the trainers I have – I’m stronger mentally,” said Guillard, in a recent interview with the UFC’s website. “That’s the biggest weapon I have because I break people mentally before the fight even happens. I feel like guys don’t want to stand in front of me and trade punches.”

In Lauzon (19-6), Guillard will be facing a man who’s best asset – his submission game – is Guillard’s worst. Lauzon has earned sixteen of his nineteen successful showings by tap-out including four “Submission of the Night” honors. Comparably, Guillard’s four career UFC losses have come by submission as have seven of his eight total defeats.

“I think he’s a tough opponent. I wouldn’t have asked for a fight that was an easy fight. He’s going to be very tough,” Guillard said. “I know he’s a good jiu-jitsu guy, but I haven’t been submitted in over two years and him just coming in here and getting a submission – that ain’t going to happen on my watch.”

Guillard’s name has been mentioned before in talks of becoming a contender to either Frankie Edgar or Gray Maynard, set to meet in the main event of UFC 136 to determine the UFC lightweight champ. Of course, that’s if Guillard takes care of the lanky Lauzon.

Then again, ask Guillard and the outcome is already set in stone.

“It’s not about if I beat Joe, it’s that I’m going to beat Joe,” Guillard said. “I’m going to knock him out like I knocked the other guys out. I’m blessed that Dana White is giving me the opportunity to be on that stage. I’m going to beat Joe Lauzon on October 8.”

The UFC 136 card continues to fill out with explosive fights and another bout has been added today in the form of a lightweight showdown between heavy-handed striker Melvin Guillard and aggressive grappler Joe Lauzon.

Both men confirmed the fight through their Twitter accounts.

Winner of five straight fights, “The Young Assassin” has looked in prime form under the guidance of Greg Jackson. Guillard followed an impressive finish of Evan Dunham in January up with another jaw-dropping knockout over the very tough Shane Roller a few weeks ago at UFC 132. With seven wins in his last eight UFC fights, Guillard has quickly worked his way up the lightweight ladder and could be a win or two away from a potential title shot in 2012.

First he’ll have to get through “J-Lau” though, who will look to earn his eighth UFC victory. Lauzon is coming off a submission victory over Kurt Warburton at UFC on Versus 4. The submission earned him “Submission of the Night” honors, his seven “of the Night” honor in ten fights. Lauzon has traded wins and losses in his last four fights though and is looking to win two straight fights for the first time since February 2009.

UFC 136 is scheduled for October 8 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. The night will be headlined by a UFC lightweight title fight between champion Frankie Edgar and top contender Gray Maynard.

Also on display at “Fight for the Troops 2” was fairly significant upset followed up by a Texas-sized promise from headliner Melvin Guillard.

Guillard took home the evening’s “Knockout of the Night”, as well as an attached $30,000 bonus, after damaging favored opponent Evan Dunham with a series of quick, powerful strikes and finally a few deal-sealing knees. The win marked the 27th of the 27-year old’s career and was his fourth straight. After the victory Guillard guaranteed an undefeated 2011 and subsequent title-shot shortly thereafter while boasting he was the best lightweight the world.

“Submission of the Night” – as well as a role in “Fight of the Night” – went to affable veteran Yves Edwards after choking Cody McKenzie unconscious in the second round of their preliminary bout. The result marked Edwards’ second consecutive instance of success in the Octagon since rejoining the promotion last year.

Comparably, the loss was the first of McKenzie’s career, though of course he at least took home thirty grand as a consolation prize for his participation in the “Fight of the Night” selection.

Ken Florian has withdrawn from the “Fight for the Troops” event scheduled for January 22 at Fort Hood in Texas after sustaining an injury to his knee while training on Monday. While it is not yet known if the damage will require surgery to repair, it will at least keep Five Ounces’ #8 lightweight out of action for the first few months of 2011.

Florian made the following statement on his website website in relation to the ordeal:

“It is with deep regret that I will not be able to compete in my scheduled fight against Evan Dunham on January 22nd, due to a knee injury I sustained during training this morning. Although I have not had an MRI as of yet; the doctors are cautiously optimistic that it will not require surgery.

I want to express my sincere apologies to the fans, the UFC and Evan for not being able to compete at (the event). Since early September, I have been training for this fight. Evan is a great fighter and has undoubtedly been working very hard towards this fight as well. Plus, it is a big disappointment that I will not be able to fight in the octagon for the brave soldiers that fight for us.

I am determined to return to the Octagon in the first half on 2011. Accordingly, I will keep you all updated.”

As mentioned, the 155-pound contender was scheduled to face 11-1 Dunham (5 Oz. #10 lightweight) at the event. However, though “Ken Flo” has been pulled from the show, the XTreme Couture standout will remain on the line-up and instead fight powerful striker Melvin Guillard.

News of the replacement was reported by HeavyMMA. Guillard was originally set to face Yves Edwards in a separate main card bout. “The Young Assassin” has won six of his previous seven fights including victories in his last three contests.

The UFC is on its way to putting together a great card for the projected UFC Fight Night 23 (i.e. “Fight for the Troops”) card expected to take place January 22nd at Fort Hood, Texas. The UFC no doubt hopes to follow in the footsteps of the first “Fight for the Troops” show which helped raise a reported $4 million dollars for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.

Undefeated TUF 10 heavyweight Matt Mitrione and returning UFC veteran Tim Hague are expected to square off at the event. Mitrione is coming off a unanimous decision win over Joey Beltran in September, while Hague will be hoping for a return to success after fighting outside the UFC, and picking up two wins, in an effort to get back to the grandest cage of them all.

Although the show has yet to be announced, another unofficial match-up rumored for the evening is a welterweight fight featuring DaMarques Johnson and Mike Guymon. Johnson confirmed the bout over the weekend via Twitter. With both men potentially fighting for their respective spot on the UFC roster based on recent losses, the fighters should leave it all in the cage come showtime!

The anticipated card will also will also feature a lightweight battle between Melvin Guillard and Texan Yves Edwards. Each man is coming off a win in his previous outing and will no doubt be looking to make a statement with the scheduled influx of talent on the horizon thanks to the UFC recent absorption of sister-promotion, WEC.

Also, as reported recently on Five Ounces of Pain, Mike Swick has fueled the rumors that he would be making his return on this card after being sidelined due to injury/illness. It has since been revealed by MMAWeekly Swick will fight relative UFC newcomer David Mitchell (11-1) at the event.

With the continued support of the Zuffa LLC, to the U.S. Armed Forces this card is mutually beneficial for the troops, the fans and the promotion alike.

The base, one of the largest in the nation, houses more than 30,000 people and may be familiar to the public based on a tragic shooting last November that left thirteen individuals dead and a military psychologist in custody. The event will mark the third time the UFC has conducted business on a military base though it has been two years since their last venture of a similar nature.

News of the possibility was reported by one of the fighters who expects to participate on the card – Melvin Guillard – via his Twitter account. Guillard did not announce who he would be facing at the event.

Guillard is currently riding a three-fight win streak and most recently outpointed Jeremy Stephens in a split decision at UFC 119 this past September. The 27-year old has emerged victorious six of the last seven times he’s entered the Octagon with the lone loss being a second-round submission to Nate Diaz in September 2009.

While questionable scoring is not a new topic in Mixed Martial Arts, the ugly issue reared its head again at the show in a significant way thanks to more than one eyebrow-raising result.

One of the victims of the judges’ expertise or lack thereof was lightweight Jeremy Stephens who found himself on the wrong end of a split decision against Melvin Guillard after serving as an aggressor throughout the bulk of the bout. Stephens recently took to popular MMA forum The Underground and expressed his surprise over the manner in which he walked away from Indianapolis a loser.

“ It wasn’t a good/exciting fight like I typically put up, but I always fight to win the KO and FOTN bonus, so sorry he kept running and I didn’t get an exciting fight for you all,” Stephens explained. “I pushed forward the whole fight, dropped him a couple times, and I never got hurt or put on my back. I’m still not sure how I didn’t get the win. It sucks, but I’ll be back better then ever. I wish he came to stand in the middle and fight. Regardless, I won.”

Prior to the loss, “Lil Heathen” had won back-to-back fights. He is 17-6 overall in his career and holds notable victories over Sam Stout and Cole Miller.

He had a substance abuse problem which led to previous time in jail, a suspension from fighting, and a lot of people talking about what could have been. This was the ongoing, troubled life of Melvin Guillard.

His latest arrest, back in August of 2008, ultimately would alter his outlook on life. He was sentenced to a five month rehabilitation program and for the moment, seems to have his life back on track.

On Monday, Melvin Guillard opened up on his changed lifestyle during a conference call promoting UFC Fight Night 19, explaining, “The turning point for me was when I had to sit in a rehab – which to me which was jail – I had to sit there for six months. Those six months gave me time to miss my family. I missed my wife. I missed the sport. I’d just sit there all the time night and day just thinking about, ‘Man, I hope and pray Dana and them understand what’s going on and I still have a job when I get out.”

His apologies were answered when he was granted a fight against Gleison Tibau for the The Ultimate Fighter 9 finale, which he won by split decision. This extended a win streak for Guillard to three fights dating back to March of 2008.

He credits his new found sobriety as the turning point in his life and sees himself as a new, more mature Melvin Guillard.

“I feel reborn again,” said Melvin. “Me and my wife will be married for a year Oct. 27. I’ve always learned growing up that you don’t how the good times are unless you endured the bad…I just don’t look at any of the bad things anymore. I just want to keep moving forward, keep progressing in the sport, and hopefully someday be a world champion. It’s pretty much the new, mature Melvin. I have no bad blood with any fighter other than Rich Clementi. I’m already to the age now where I’m 26, I’ve aged overnight. I had to grow up overnight if I wanted to continue to be successful in this sport. I have no problems with Nate.”

It remains to be seen if Guillard can continue on his straight path and make an impact in the UFC lightweight division, but it’s worth noting a determined and focused Guillard is a step in the right direction.

A lightweight bout between Nate Diaz and Melvin Guillard has been officially announced as the main event for UFC Fight Night 19.

The event is scheduled to take place on September 16 from Oklahoma City.

Also announced for the card is a lightweight showdown between Gray Maynard and Roger Huerta. The bout will mark the last in Huerta’s UFC contract as he expects to spend more time focusing on his career in show business.

Diaz will be looking to bounce back from his recent unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Joe Stevenson at The Ultimate Fighter Finale and a prior decision defeat to Clay Guida at UFC 94. Diaz could very well find himself in a must win situation in regards to remaining with the UFC on September.

While Diaz is coming back from two consecutive defeats in the octagon, Guillard will be looking to make it three straight in Oklahoma. His prior two appearances in the UFC saw him knocking off Dennis Siver and Gleison Tibau.

The card for UFC 101 continues to take shape with a reported lightweight bout between Thiago Tavares and Melvin Guillard the latest matchup to be made public.

MMAWeekly.com was first to report news of the Tavares vs. Guillard matchup with the site going on record to state that bout agreements are expected to be finalized shortly.

The yet-to-be announced UFC 101 is expected to take place on August 8 in Portland, Ore. with matchups between Randy Couture vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Forrest Griffin vs. Thiago Silva reported in recent days.

Guillard, 21-7-2, has not fought since July of last year when he recorded a 36 second TKO over Dennis Siver during the undercard of UFC 86. The fight was Guillard’s first bout inside of the Octagon following a one-fight sabatical outside of the UFC that took place during a Rage in the Cage event in March of 2008.

Guillard, a veteran from the second season of The Ultimate Fighter, is 4-3 lifetime in the UFC but just 1-2 in his last three bouts under the organization’s banner. An explosive striker with suspect ground skills, Guillard holds notable victories over Marcus Davis and Kyle Bradley but also has sustained notable losses to Rich Clementi, Josh Neer, and Joe Stevenson.

Tavares, 14-3, trains out of American Top Team in Florida and recently ended a two-fight losing streak at UFC 94 in January. After sustaining losses to Matt Wiman at UFC 85 and Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 88, Tavares recorded a unanimous decision victory over Manny Gamburyan.

Tavares’ lifetime record in the UFC is 4-3 and includes wins over Naoyuki Kotani, Jason Black, and Michihiro Omigawa.

According to the report Guillard is currently in custody at the Harris County Jail in Houston, Texas. He is set to be released to a drug treatment facility as soon as space becomes available. This is part of his amended probation.

Guillard was set to face off against lightweight competitor Spencer Fisher at UFC 90. Instead Fisher will fight Shannon Gugerty. Guillard was originally arrested in August of 2007 for possession of less than a gram of a controlled substance and was under a two year probationary period beginning in October of 2007.

This is not Guillard’s first run in with this kind of thing as he tested positive for cocaine following a loss to Joe Stevenson at UFC Fight Night 9 in April 2007 and was suspended for eight months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Guillard admitted to using cocaine just six days prior to the fight and believed it would be out of his system by the time the fight and subsequent drug test rolled around.

Details of the probation violation were not available at the time of the report.

The reason for Guillard’s removal from the card is not yet known and the UFC has yet to officially name a replacement. However, MMAjunkie.com is reporting that Fisher’s new opponent is Shannon Gugerty.

Gugerty is 11-2, according to Sherdog’s fight finder and made his UFC debut during UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19. Facing fellow newcomer Dale Hartt, Gugerty won via submission after executing a rear naked choke at 3:33 of round 1.

Fisher, a member of Pat Miletich’s Miletich Fighting Systems, is a veteran of nine UFC fights and holds a career record of 6-3 when competing inside the Octagon. His last fight took place in June during the live season finale for the seventh season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” Facing fellow native Iowa native Jeremy Stephens, Fisher recorded a unanimous decision victory.

UFC 90 is scheduled to be headlined by UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva defending his title vs. challenger Patrick Cote. Diego Sanchez and Thiago Alves are also scheduled to square off in a match in which the winner is guaranteed a future shot at the UFC welterweight title.

The report indicates that both fighters have been sent bout agreements that are expected to be signed in the coming days.

Fisher’s trainer, Pat Miletich, isn’t exactly pleased about the tentative matchup.

“Spencer has no reason to fight that guy,” Miletich is quoted as saying by MMA Weekly’s Tom Hamlin. “I don’t think Melvin’s earned the right to fight him yet. I think Spencer should be fighting somebody where he’s got something to gain.”

Guillard is 21-7-2 lifetime and holds a record of 4-3 in the UFC. He returned to the Octagon at UFC 86 after a one-fight sabbatical from the promotion and was victorious last month when he TKO’d Dennis Siver at 0:36 of round 1. Prior to the win, he has suffered consecutive losses while in the UFC.

Like Guillard, Fisher also has 21 career wins against four defeats. A veteran of nine UFC fights, Fisher is 6-3 while competing in the Octagon and holds notable wins over Thiago Alves, Matt Wiman, Dan Lauzon, and Sam Stout. He last competed in June during the live season finale for the seventh installment of “The Ultimate Fighter,” recording a unanimous decision victory over Jeremy Stephens.

UFC 90 will emanate from just outside of Chicago in Rosemont, IL at the Allstate Arena and will be headlined by Anderson Silva defending the UFC middleweight title against Patrick Cote.

Alex Karalexis is off the card for WEC 35, scheduled for Saturday, August 3 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, according to a source speaking exclusively to FiveOuncesOfPain.com.

Five Ounces of Pain has learned that Karalexis has been suffering from a cracked rib and was trying to receive clearance by Zuffa’s doctors to fight as scheduled against Todd Moore. Karalexis did not get the clean bill of health that he was looking for, as lightweight prospect and recent signee Shane Roller has been tapped to fill-in for Karalexis against Moore.

When contacted by Five Ounces of Pain for comment, Ken Pavia, Moore’s agent, confirmed that Karalexis was in fact out and that Moore’s new opponent is indeed Roller.

Roller, a member of Ted Ehrhardt’s Team Takedown, recently signed a multi-fight contract with the WEC along with stablemates Jake Rosholt and Johny Hendricks. Rosholt and Hendricks will both debut for the WEC on Sept. 10, with Rosholt set to face Danillo Villefort and Hendricks slated to face off with Alex Serdyukov.

Five Ounces of Pain contacted Villefort via text earlier this afternoon. Initially, he was unsure the matchup vs. Rosholt had been set but he later responded to indicate that the fight is indeed on. We have also learned from a separate source that Villefort, formerly of the IFL, has signed a five-fight contract with the WEC.

Roller’s original debut date had been tentatively scheduled for December but a source indicated that the WEC asked him to be ready for fight on the Aug. 3 and Sept. 10 card in the event of an injury.

Rosholt, Hendricks, and Roller all wrestled for amateur wrestling powerhouse Oklahoma State and are all members of Texas businessman Ted Ehrhardt’s “Team Takedown.” Team Takedown signed the three fighters to exclusive management contracts in which the fighters draw a salary and have their training expenses paid for by Ehrhardt. In exchange, Ehrhardt is entitled to a share of the fighters’ earnings.

Rosholt, perhaps the crown jewel of the three fighter acquisitions by the WEC, is a middleweight fighter with a 4-0 record. The 25-year old was a three-time NCAA champion at OSU and was also a four-time NCAA All-American. He was recruited out of high school after winning three State championships.

The charismatic Hendricks is 3-0 in his young career as a professional mixed martial artist. The 24-year old welterweight was a two-time NCAA champion and a four-time All-American at OSU. He is also a former three-time Big 12 conference champion as well as a three-time State champion while in high school.

Roller, the oldest member of Team Takedown at 27, is 3-1 as a pro lightweight. While at OSU, he was a three-time NCAA All-American and a former Big 12 conference champion. He was a four-time High School State champion.

Debut dates for the trio of fighters have not been set. Although information pertaining to their first fights for the WEC could be made available within the next several days. The WEC’s next event will be held on Aug. 3 in Las Vegas and will be followed by an event on Sept. 10, most likely to be held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Rosholt will likely become an instant contender for the WEC middleweight title that is currently held by Paulo Filho. Meanwhile, after several wins, both Hendricks and Roller could become title contenders in their respective weight classes as well.

In other Team Takedown-related news, Rosholt and Hendricks are scheduled to be featured on the VERSUS MMA-themed reality television show “TapouT” on Aug. 20.
