A middleweight matchup between season four veteran of The Ultimate Fighter Jorge Rivera and one-time World Extreme Cagefighting competitor Nissen Osterneck has been finalized for UFC Fight Night 18 on April 1.

MMAjunkie.com was the first to break the news of the matchup.

Rivera is a eight-year veteran of the sport who last competed at UFC 85 this past June, where he lost to Danish kickboxing specialist Martin Kampmann via submission in the first round. Prior to the loss, Rivera recorded a first round knockout upset against TUF 3 middleweight champion Kendall Grove at UFC 80.

He will look to get back on track against Osterneck, who is coming off the first loss of his career this past November against former NCAA champion Jake Rosholt. Competing against Rosholt during a televised match at WEC 36, Osterneck was TKO’d by punches at 3:48 of round 2. The Hawaiian native has also competed for Mark Cuban’s HDNet Fights promotion in the past.

UFC Fight Night 18 will take place at the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tennessee. The two-hour Spike TV broadcast will be headlined by former WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit making his UFC debut against Martin Kampmann and will serve as a prelude to the season premiere for the ninth season of The Ultimate Fighter.

Additional reported matchups for the UFN 18 include TUF 8 lightweight champion Efrain Escudero vs. Jeremy Stephens, TUF 8 light heavyweight champion Ryan Bader vs. Carmelo Marrero, Junie Browning vs. Cole Miller, Tyson Griffin vs. Rafael dos Anjos, Matt Horwich vs. Ricardo Almeida, former WEC welterweight title challenger Brock Larson vs. newcomer Jesse Sanders, Aaron Simpson vs. Tim McKenzie, Steve Steinbeiss vs. Ryan Jensen, and Rob Kimmons vs. Joe Vedepo.

Separate published reports indicate that light heavyweight Steve Steinbeiss and middleweight Nissen Osterneck have been transferred from the roster of Zuffa-owned World Extreme Cagefighting to its sister promotion, the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Both additions to the UFC roster come as a mild surprise. Steinbeiss and Osterneck competed at WEC 36 on Nov. 5 and both lost to their respective opponents. The UFC has traditionally avoided signing fighters coming off losses outside of the promotion.

According to MMA Weekly, Steinbeiss, 4-2, will serve out the remainder of his original four fight contract signed with the WEC while competing under the UFC banner.

Steinbeiss, whose brother, Ray, is also an MMA fighter, has three fights remaining on his contract following a split decision loss to former UFC veteran Carmelo Marrero during his WEC debut at WEC 36.

Steinbeiss trains out of Arizona Combat Sports with notable fighters such as WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner, WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit, and current UFC fighter C.B. Dollaway.

Reports that Osterneck is also headed to the UFC comes courtesy of the website CramThis.com. Osterneck, 5-1, suffered the first loss of his pro career at WEC 36 when he was TKO’d in the second round against former three-time NCAA champion Jake Rosholt.

Prior to joining Zuffa, Osterneck had competed for Mark Cuban’s HDNet Fights in December of 2007, where he was able to defeat Freddie Espiricueta via verbal submission at 2:37 of round 1.

Frye was set to face fellow MMA legend, Oleg Taktarov in one of the two “Superfights” but he has now been replaced by 45 year old Patrick Smith.

Smith (14-13) participated in the first ever UFC event where he was heel hooked by UFC Hall of Famer, Ken Shamrock in the first round of the tournament. He returned at UFC 2 where he made it to the tournament final after winning three straight bouts. In the final he faced another UFC Hall of Famer in Royce Gracie who made Smith tap out to strikes in a little over a minute. Smith went 2-1 last year with his last performance being a TKO victory over David Tyner.

YAMMA Pit Fighting is an upstart MMA promotion setup by UFC co-creator, Bob Meyrowitz. The first show will take place on Aprill 11th at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey. In addition to the aforementioned “Superfight” between Smith and Taktarov there will be another “Superfight” between Eric ‘Butterbean’ Esch and Gary Goodridge as well as an 8-man heavyweight tournament.

When Bob Meyrowitz’s new YAMMA Pit Fighting promotion made the announcement earlier this week that they’d be promoting a single-night heavyweight tournament on April 11 in Atlantic City, it raised a lot of eyebrows.

While California approved the use of single-night four-man tournaments last year, most commission states frown upon the single-night tournament concept. New Jersey would be one of those states, having never sanctioned a single-night MMA tournament.

To be honest, a lot of people thought YAMMA was blowing smoke in stating that its tournament had been approved by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board. But after speaking with the NJSACB, I learned that there was some method behind the madness. As it turns out, no fighter involved in the tournament will be in a position where they have to fight more than a combined total of 19 minutes.

In my latest CBSSports.com article, I take a look at Meyrowitz’s new venture and reveal some additional details publicly for the first time. Some of those details include the explanation as to how YAMMA’s tournament concept will work along with plans for the promotion’s “Masters Division”:

The plan for the promotion’s first tournament, which will consist of eight heavyweight fighters, is to hold four first-round fights that will consist of a single round of five minutes (per fight). After the first round is concluded, the winners will have to pass a medical exam to advance to the semifinals.

In order to provide sufficient rest, a “Master’s Fight” will take place in between the first round and the semifinals. Meyrowitz said he would elaborate on the Master’s concept as a later date, but CBSSports.com has learned that “Master’s Fights” will essentially be “Legends Fights” with veteran combatants familiar to older fans. One fighter under consideration is none other than Russian heavyweight Oleg Taktarov, the winner of UFC 6.

Taktarov was one of the UFC’s marquee names during Meyrowitz’s tenure. He recently returned to competitive mixed martial arts last year at the age of 40 after not fighting since 1998.

After the first Master’s Fight, the tournament semifinals will be held, once again one round lasting five minutes. There will be more physical exams and another Masters Fight before the final, which will be three three-minute rounds.
