Main SHOWTIME card:

Jared Hamman def. Po’ai Suganuma via TKO (strikes) at 2:34 of round 1

Fabricio Camoes def. Sammy Morgan via submission (rear naked choke) at 0:47 of round 1

Cyrille Dibate def. Jaime Fletcher via unanimous decision

Rosi Sexton def. Debi Purcell via split decision

Ray Lizama def. Keith Berry via TKO (strikes) at 2:15 of round 2

Non-Televised Preliminary Card:

Katrina Alendale def. Melanie La’Croix via unanimous decision

Roberto Vargas def. Ralph Lopez via split decision

Jesse Brock def. Josh Rave via unanimous decision

Lucas Gumaza def. Kenny Johnson via split decision

David “Tarzan” Douglas def. William Jacobson via TKO (corner stoppage) at 1:12 of round 1

Notes: Hamman vs. Suganuma was a great fight with a bunch of momentum changes in a short amount of time. After the bout, announcer Mauro Ranallo mentioned the idea of a rubber match between the two. However, Hamman, who recently quit his job as a defensive line coach at Redlands University, could be in line for a fight against light heavyweight sensation Rafael Feijao. FiveOuncesOfPain.com spoke to an EliteXC official two weeks ago who mentioned that Feijao’s next opponent could come from the winners of the Hamman vs. Suganuma and Diabate vs. Fletcher fights… Diabate expressed a desire following his win to take on Feijao… After his win over Morgan, Camoes made a brief plea to to fight a step up in competition, asking where the “big boys” are at and talking about a shot at K.J. Noons’ lightweight title… During the calendar of upcoming events, no mention of the ill-fated Sept. 20 show in Albuquerque was mentioned. The next EliteXC-related card will be a ShoXC event on Sept. 26. No matches have been announced but Five Ounces of Pain has reported that Jon Murphy will be fighting Shane Del Rosario and Matt Makowski will be going against Erik Apple… The week after the Oct. 4 CBS show in Ft. Lauderdale, there will be a ShoXC event on Friday, October 10… Berry was a heavy favorite to beat Lizama. Lizama had been slated to fight Justin Levens during Affliction’s first-ever PPV on July 19. The bout was canceled due to time constraints… Alendale is trained by EliteXC welterweight champion Jake Shields… Brock trains out of Urijah Faber’s “Ultimate Fitness” in Sacramento and is viewed as a strong prospect at 140 lbs. … Douglas is the same fighter who fought Marlon Mathias in a non-televised swing bout during EliteXC’s second CBS show on July 26 in Stockton. Douglas won early in the first round in that fight as well.

DREAM.5 is in the books. I didn’t get to see the entire event, but from what I did see, I was pretty impressed. Really good action. HDNet was also live at the venue in Osaka and the broadcast was strong. It really makes a huge difference being there in person as opposed to commentating in a studio. Here are the full results from today’s event:

– Daisuke Nakamura submits Andy Ologun with an armbar at 3:41 of Rd 1

– Lightweight GP Semifinal: Shinya Aoki via Unanimous Decision over Caol Uno

– Lightweight GP Semifinal: Eddie Alvarez TKO’s (strikes) Tatsuya Kawajiri at 7:35 of Rd 1. This was a really strong fight. Alvarez dropped Kawajiri with a right cross and thought he had won via knockout. The fight was not called so after raising his arms in victory, Alvarez jumped on a downed Kawajiri and hit him until the ref finally called a halt. The problem was, that earlier in the fight Alvarez caught a punch from Kawajiri that grazed him. Towards the end of the punch, Alvarez caught a grazing elbow. There was a minor cut and severe swelling to Alvarez’s right eye. DREAM doctors decided later in the show that he could not continue.

— Lightweight GP Tournament Reserve Match: Joachim Hansen submits Kultar “Black Mamba” Gill with an armbar at 2:42 of Rd 1. Hansen advanced to the tournament final after DREAM’s doctors would not allow Alvarez to continue. The doctors made the right call but an emotional Alvarez wanted to continue. Between fights later in the show, he told commentators Kenny Rice and Bas Rutten that he wanted to continue and pleaded with doctors. He stated that since Aoki was a submission specialist and not a puncher, that the eye wouldn’t come into play. During the announcement to the live crowd, Alvarez spoke to the audience and said the injury was unfortunate but that there was nobody he’d rather see take his spot than Hansen. The crowd reacted very strong to Alvarez, who looked like he teared up at one point.

– Joseph Benavidez submits Junya Kudo at 2:42 of Rd 1. Benavidez had been slated to face Kid Yamamoto, who was taken off the card earlier this week with a knee injury. Benavidez is now 8-0. He trains out of Urijah Faber’s gym in Sacramento, Calif. and Faber did an interview with Rice and Rutten between one of the fights. He really believes in Benavidez and considers him one of the top bantamweights in the world. Faber said he feels that getting a win on such a high-profile card in Japan will open up new opportunities for Benavidez. With Yamamoto on the shelf for an extended period of time, might a shot at the WEC be in the cards?

– Kuniyoshi Hironaka TKO’s (cut) Motoki Miyazawa at 8:57 of Rd 1

– Hideo Tokoro defeats Takeshi Yamazaki via Unanimous Decision

– Yoshihiro Akiyama submits Katsuyori Shibata at 6:34 of Rd 1 with a choke. Akiyama was allowed to wear a Gi. I know at one point Gis were legal in PRIDE, but didn’t they change the rule? I also had thought Gis were going to be illegal in DREAM? The announcers were kind of caught off-guard that Akiyama was wearing a Gi as well. They brought up the Sakuraba fight in which it was deemed that Akiyama had too much lubrication on his body. So because of that, he’s allowed to wear the Gi? I bring this up because Akiyama grabbed his own sleeve during the choke on Yamazaki. How many breaks is Akiyama going to get before he has to sink or swim on his own? I also don’t understand the repeated use of Shibata as a sacrificial lamb. Maybe he’ll be a good fighter one day, but he’s very green right now. Why do they keep using him in mis-matches?

– Alistair Overeem submits Mark Hunt with a keylock/shoulder lock in Rd 1. I don’t have the exact time, but it might have been less than a minute. Hunt landed a haymaker and the momentum knocked Overeem to the ground. Hunt followed the fight to the floor and got a little ground and pound in but Overeem had good hip movement and was setting up a submission the whole time. He apparently was on vacation when he got the call to take the fight a week ago. He weighed in at about 235 lbs. while Rice indicated that Hunt had weighed in over 290 lbs. This was a big win for the Strikeforce heavyweight champion.

– Lightweight GP Final: Joachim Hansen TKO’s (strikes) Shinya Aoki in Rd 1.
I don’t have the exact time, but the end came within the first five minutes. Aoki wanted the fight on the ground and pulled guard at one point. He worked the rubber guard and looked like he was close to catching Hansen. However, Hansen got loose and stacked Aoki and then started landing some stiff shots from the top. He hit Aoki with a big punch and Aoki stopped defending himself, forcing the referee to step in and stop it. Alvarez joined Hansen’s corner in the celebration. Prior to the fight, he had also challenged the winner. Hansen vs. Alvarez II for the DREAM lightweight title? Sounds like a plan to me.

Results of the amateur fight card is as follows:

– Andres Lebron def. Daniel Chacon via rear naked choke submission at 0:52 of round 2

– Jeshua Alston def. Erik Williams via TKO at 0:10 of round 1

– Kris Acevedo def. Joshua Pugliese via TKO at 1:10 of round 1

– Kyle Dolan def. Bryan Mann via unanimous decision

– Frank Piff def. Michael Zauberman via keylock submission at 1:23 of round 2

– Christopher Clark def. Scott Hutt via armbar submission at 0:48 of round 3

– Joel Bane def. Ronnie Allen via rear naked choke submission at 2:20 of round 2

– Matt Rizzo def. Joel Finneran via unanimous decision

— Tim Williams and John Doyle competed in a Muay Thai exhibition that was followed by a submission grappling exhibition. Neither fighter finished the other and since it was an exhibition, the fight was not scored by the judges.

– Dan Koch def. Joe Pond via unanimous decision

– Casey Adams def. Chris Bull via rear naked choke submission at 1:11 of round 2

– Kenny Wilson def. Jeff Morber via armbar submission at 2:04 of round 2

– Dan Flounders def. Pat Sabatini via rear naked choke submission at 2:36 of round 1. Flounders is the new CITC bantamweight champion.

Lebron and Acevedo were especially impressive. Also, the Clark vs. Hutt bout was what I considered to be the fight of the night. Hutt was dominating Clark but couldn’t put him away. Clark wouldn’t quit and rallied to submit Hutt in the third. Had he not scored the submission, it’s almost certain he would have lost the fight if it had gone to the judges.

Pro fighters Wilson Reis and Aaron Miesner were two of the three judges for the event. Miesner has been sidelined since undergoing knee surgery after aggravating a pre-existing injury during the qualifying round for TUF 7. He was walking without a limp. Reis will be fighting Brian Caraway on July 26 on SHOWTIME at 8 p.m. ET. EliteXC heavyweight Jon Murphy was the referee for the event.

Doyle is a pro fighter who last competed at EliteXC: Street Certified. He took a fight on short notice against Feijao and lost in the first round. He looked sharp against Williams in their exhibition and he should be fighting MMA again soon. Doyle’s camp has indicated that he will be dropping down to welterweight.

As for Williams, I’ve seen a few of his amateur fights now and I strongly believe that he has good pro potential. There might not be much left for him to accomplish on the amateur circuit.

It was also great to see Joe Pond in action. He’s my favorite amateur fighter out there. The guy fights with a ton of heart.

Combat in the Cage will be returning to Delaware for “15th Strike” on August 16. The show apparently will be pretty stacked. It will also feature the first female fight in CITC history. My wife, Andria, will be one of the competitors in that bout.

I’ve been perusing various MMA blogs, websites, and forums over the past few days and am beginning to see a common theme regarding Lyoto Machida. Either you love him and his style or you hate him and his style. There doesn’t seem to be any in-between. You think he’s boring? That’s fine. You think he’s fun to watch? That’s all good and well too. I, for one, enjoy watching Machida fight because he is so confusing to his opponents, he always has a good gameplan, and he rarely makes mistakes.

But what I don’t understand is likening him to Kalib Starnes in his fight against Nate Quarry. This argument is the kind of uninformed, unintelligent B.S. that I have been seeing spewed all over the place since Saturday night. Did these people even watch the fight?

First and foremost, if you don’t remember, Kalib Starnes lost his fight against Nate Quarry. He absolutely refused to engage and literally was backpedaling around the cage. You can’t fight like Starnes and win. So that begs to the question: how does this apply to Machida? Machida moves in, engages, and moves out. He creates his own pocket, on his time, and by his book. He makes you fight his game.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has done this throughout his career in boxing and the guy is considered the best pound for pound boxer in the world and one of the best ever. He’s loved by millions while Machida is a villain. I don’t understand that. Machida is outstanding at not getting hit and making sure that he hits you when he has the chance. What is so wrong about that?

Did you expect him to get into a slugfest with Tito Ortiz? Did you expect him to stand right in front of him and allow Ortiz space to take him down? If you’ve watched Machida before then you know exactly what to expect. He never plays into his opponents’ strengths and that’s what makes him so good.

Another thing I don’t understand is where all this hate suddenly came from. Did these people not watch Machida fight Franklin? Penn? Bonnar? Sokoudjou? Nakamura? He’s had the same style for a long time now and all of a sudden everyone has their panties in a bunch because he beat Tito Ortiz.

Like I said, I don’t care if you like Machida or hate Machida. But please don’t group him in with Kalib Starnes because he deserves better from MMA fans. And if you truly think that, then I have to say that you don’t know what you’re watching.

Or so he told The Fight Network:

“[UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva told me that it usually takes a couple of days for their legal department to complete the paperwork and that he would send me all of the paperwork to indicate that my contract has been dissolved,” Starnes said. “Later on in the afternoon, after I had spoken to Joe Silva, a story was released by some reporter from Yahoo! in which Dana White said that he had released me from my contract. I received no documentation on that, and it came after I asked to be released.”

Kalib Starnes claims to have asked for his release after sustaining injuries early in the fight against Nate Quarry that stopped him from being effective from that point forward. He claims for the paltry $10,000 he was making that picking up five injuries just wasn’t worth it.

“Dana White wouldn’t stand and trade with a guy [like Quarry] who had an 80 or 90 percent knockout ratio with injuries like I had Saturday night,” Starnes said. “He wouldn’t cross the street for $10,000. I don’t have anything to prove to anybody. I’m not about to stand there and get smashed to pieces. After I knew my foot was broken, I was trying to back up and work off the jab and keep moving so I didn’t get knocked out.”

Even if all of this injury news is true I have a hard time believing the casual fan is going to find it in their heart to forgive Kalib for a performance that will go down in the ages. You might have only made $10,000 but try telling that to a guy that shelled out $45 to watch that unfold for fifteen minutes. Kalib went out with a parting shot at Dana:

“All of these comments come from a man that has never had a fight in his entire life who claims to be the ultimate authority on fighting and courage.”

Well even if you’re hating Kalib right now you have to admit he’s kind of got him there. I’ve never quite looked at it the same since Dana was talking about a guy (Matt Arroyo?) on The Ultimate Fighter not being a fighter or warrior because he pulled out of a fight with cracked ribs. Yeah, let’s see how you’d do. It’s one thing to know your sport and run it well, it’s another to question manhoods when you can’t do what they do in the first place. Well, except maybe Starnes. I think he could definitely do that.
