Fabiano vs. Lierley: HDNet Fight of the Week (video)

In this week’s installment of HDNet Fights’ Fight of the Week we have former IFL featherweight champion and current WEC top ten featherweight Wagnney Fabiano (10-1) squaring off against the highly touted Shad Lierley (2-2) out of Ken Shamrock’s camp. This fight is a title defense for Fabiano who was the first ever IFL featherweight champion after a submission victory over L.C. Davis in the IFL Grand Prix. Fabiano just recently announced that he has signed with the WEC where he will most likely contend for the 145 lbs. title against current champion Urijah Faber sometime down the road.

Shad Lierley shocked the world when he took Chris Horodecki to decision at an IFL event a little over year ago, almost defeating the Xtreme Couture prospect in the process. Once the IFL created a 145 lbs. weight class it only made sense for Lierley to drop down to his normal fighting weight and face off against the champion Wagnney Fabiano. Fabiano looks to show the world why he’s ranked in the top ten by showing that he not only has submission skills but striking skills as well. Lierley is a very tough kid and proved it in his loss to Horodecki but will Fabiano’s skills be far too much for him at his natural weight class? Or will Lierley scrap his way to a victory? You will not want to blink during this fight!

Report: Calvancante vs. Aoki postponed

Sherdog.com has confirmed that an advertised match between Gesias “JZ Calvan” Calvancante and Shinya Aoki scheduled for Dec. 31 in Japan at Yarennoka has been postponed. According to the report, a new date for the match could be announced at a press conference on Dec. 30.

Greg Savage of Sherdog.com is reporting that sources have informed the website that a much anticipated match between Gesias “JZ Calvan” Calvancante and Shinya Aoki scheduled for Dec. 31 in Japan on the Yarennoka! card appears to be in jeopardy.

Despite Calvancante making no mention of the match possibly being off during recent interviews and M-1 Global CEO Monte Cox being quoted as saying that he’s heard nothing about the match being canceled, sources insist that an announcement will likely be made this week that the bout is off.

According to Savage, it is believed that Calvancate recently underwent surgeries on his nose and his knee and has been unable to train for the scheduled bout.

CBSSports.com: Melendez wants to fight Calvancanti

My interview with Gilbert Melendez is now available at CBSSports.com. Melendez will be fighting for the first time in ’07 this Saturday at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif. He’ll defend the Strikeforce lightweight title against Tetsuji Kato.

I asked Gilbert several questions about his contract status and about the UFC. Right now, he’s bound to Strikeforce in the U.S. but it looks like he can fight outside the promotion in other countries. I asked him about K-1 HERO’s and the first thing he brought up was wanting a chance to fight JZ “Gesias Calvancanti” Calvan:

Q: You mentioned possibly fighting outside of the U.S. and in Japan, would K-1 HERO’s be a possibility?

GM: Definitely, man. After seeing JZ (Gesias Calvancanti) win that (153-pound) tournament I kind of want a piece of him, to tell you the truth. But that’s only because I respect him. I wouldn’t mind going out there, and I’m sure it would be a lot easier if I went out there to fight him in Japan, so it would definitely be something I’d like to do. But of course, I want to be respectful to Strikeforce and work around their schedule and make sure we’re on the same page if that does happen.
